^ HI welcome to the thread and to Fanbolt! You'll love it here, there are plenty of other Toronto peple here, and Ontario people in general.
Nita, you're going to do the p&p tour? wow, that'll be really nice! :) definately go to Paris as well, oh and Italy too lol. You won't regret it. Go even if you can't find someone to go with you.

hi lauren! welcome to FB and the canadian GG thread!!!! :)
yeah...we've both watched P&P (the movie) WAY too many times and so we're dying to go see all the locations it was shot  yes...we're THAT nerdy.
sigh...i definitely would love to go to Paris and Italy. i was talking to my aunt and she was going on and on about the pastries and what not. yummy!!!! and i highly doubt my parents would let me go alone, lol. no way! i dunno if i'd want to go all by myself either, lol.

^ Travelling is definitely better if you go with somebody.
If you're backpacking, I'd suggest stitching a Canadian flag to your bag. I heard it gets you free food in some places. Also, it helps you meet other Canadian backpackers, whom you can travel with. (Apparently it's common for backpackers to attach themselves to other backpackers from the same country and explore together.)

What's the P&P tour?
Paris and Italy sound awesome. They're such beautiful cities. I'd love to see Rome and Paris :). But personally, backpacking is way more fun when you have someone else to go with. Obviously. But you know, if you don't want someone bringing you down, for sure, go alone I guess.
Welcome Lauren!

yup, DEFINITELY gonna be stitching a canadian flag on my bag  i think all canadian travellers naturally do that nowadays, lol. gotta love some of the stories you hear out there though from travellers who are mistaken as americans. my friend's friend went to paris once and they were asking for directions but the people they asked pretended they didn't know english, so eventually they gave up. turned around and there's a flag stitched on their bags and the french are like "oh, you canadian! we thought you were americans. it's right over there!" lol.
there's this other story that i heard from my brother where his friends went to the czech republic and the hockey world championships was also going on. they went to one of the squares one day to watch the game, and low and behold it was czechs versus canadians. so there's thousands of czechs surrounding 4 canadian dudes, while the canadian team totally kicked the czechs butts, lol. some huge czech came up to them and said "F--- you Canada" and 3 of the 4 just ignored him and started backing off, but the one guy just retorted back "F--- you Czechs". naturally his friends were all thinking 'oh crap...." but luckily the czech found him funny and all was good. somehow they sort of ended up being celebrities of their own that week. ended up in the local paper and all
i'm actually not too sure what the P&P tour totally consists of. i'm hearing that they take us to all the locations the p&p movie was shot, but i'm not too sure. my friend swears the tour exists but i've never heard of it before she mentioned it. i guess we'll just have to see when we get there. if not, we're still planning our own p&p tour, hehehe.

Maybe whenever you ask for directions you should open with "I'm from Canada and I'm a little lost. Could you help me out?"

Travelling with someone is definately fun. But I've heard from a few friends of mine who've travelled alone claiming that it's so much better. You can do whatever you want whenever you want. And it's easier to meet fellow travellers when you're on your own. (i guess that is, if you want to meet fellow travellers). It's always fun meeting other people, much more fun meeting other canadians. I met a girl from Toronto while i was touring up to Bath/stonehenge by myself. we explored everything together.
hehe, the hockey in czech story is funny.

Yah my old teacher in grade 6 had a similar story. She was in Europe with her friends and everywhere she went people were ignoring then and being rude so they went to this store, managed to find some small Canadian flag pins and put them on their shirts. She said everyone automatically turned friendly.
I was in America all week this past week (Darien Lake) and I noticed that they really like to stereotype Canadians. Some guy was like "Are you from Canada?!" I said yah and he was like "Perfect! Do you say Eh?". Or they ask you about your pet beaver or your igloo. I mean, it's funny but gets really annoying after awhile...

Ugh, yeah. I hate it when people stereotype Canadians. Well actually, I do say "Eh" but I have no idea where that idea of us saying it came from. Same thing when people stereotype Asians. I mean, it's okay when we make fun of ourselves, but it becomes annoying when other people start doing it.
Nita, when are you going backpacking again? And when are those touring things happening at UWO again?
Kaylan
08-12-2006, 04:30 PM
A similar story but in our own country. A lady I work with in Toronto, who is french from Montreal originally. Years ago she went back to visit Montreal, she stood in a restaurant/cafe waiting for a table. She was waiting a long long time, until she spoke to one of the staff in French. Instantly the person was, "oh you're french!" and she got a table right away.
lol, excuse me, pet beaver?
java_junkie
08-12-2006, 04:57 PM
^^same thing happened to my family. the service we get when we speak english is usually a LOT slower. but if we say something in French to them, it instantly changes. and it surprises them too because they wouldn't normally expect a lot of asians to know french that well. ah...i guess one good thing did come out of being in french immersion
but i know what you mean. i always make fun of myself and my family because of some of the weird quirky asian things we do. and then i'll be like "yeah...only asians would totally do that". but atleast we totally understand the context and everything. when others stereotype though...it's like "no...that's NOT how it it thank you!" lol...
Nicole - well, i wouldn't really call it backpacking i don't think. just travelling, hehe. but next summer, hopefully!!! :D and fall preview days at UWO is Nov. 18 (Sat!).

I'd like a pet beaver. I could train it to attack people like in that beer commercial.
Totally random question, but did any of you used to watch Due South? I've recently started watching the DVDs and this show just cracks me up! So many Canadian in-jokes and the mountie is so stereotypical it's funny. Also, this show caused me to develop a crush on an actor named Callum Keith Rennie. He does a lot of Canadian projects and a whole bunch of bit parts in American films/tv shows.

Due South is about an uber polite/nice mountie that goes to Chicago to avenge the death of his father. Basically, Paul Gross plays the stereotypical Canadian and he walks around in a Mountie suit. This show is pure cheese, but in a good way.
I wish I lived on rez. By commuting, I think I'm missing so much from the campus lifestyle. Hopefully I can get into grad school later and live on campus then...

I haven't seen it. I saw the preview awhile back. I'm not going to see it cuz it's not my type of comedy and I thought the jokes in the preview were very cliché. (Even though I really like Colm Feore). But 2 of my friends saw it and said that they had a good time.

is it sad that it took me a couple of views of the trailers before i actually got the title? lol....i was like "what the hell is a 'bon cop'? but then when i actually paid attention to the trailer and figured out he was from quebec, things started clicking. yeah yeah...i'm so slow! lol

you volunteering again for the toronto film fest webeh?
Even better, I interned. I just finished my contract last week. Should be getting some free ticket vouchers later for the festival. I'm hoping I get a good amount because with summer classes, the internship, and my jobs, I missed all the volunteer recruitment sessions. My plan this year is to bounce from theater to theater, watching movies. Hopefully, this will work out for me.
This fall, I'm going to try to get another internship position, while I finish my last year of school. Then hopefully in the summer I can get a full time job, or at least a contract of some sort. (I plan to work for a year before trying to get into grad school.)
I feel like ranting. I have a part-time job where you have to make all monetary transactions without the aid of a computerized cash registers. (I work at a very busy kiosk that's, that does daily inventory of the stock. It involves gambling. Okay fine, I sell lottary tickets, which I hate with a passion.) Doing the math in my head isn't the problem, but rather customers thinking you've got the change wrong when you clearly didn't irritates me. You have absolutely no way of proving that you've got it right (and they're wrong) because you don't type the original cash amount into anything. So, you have to pretend the customer is right to get them out of your face and then your short.
So this is what happened today. This guy spends $5. He pays with a five dollar bill. He leaves for a bit and comes back claiming that he paid with a $20 bill. He gets pissed like customers usually do when they think you screwed up. So of course, to make him go away I have to pretend he's right. (Also, it didn't help that I can't remember the transaction clearly anymore because it's already out of my short-term memory.) Now, I'm $15 dollars short. (It's not really a huge deal because the company knows that people try to rip us off all the time, but this short still bugs me. Also, I probably will have sign something saying that I did make a mistake, when I didn't.) Gah...
Kaylan
08-27-2006, 04:03 AM
Yes I understand, it's hard to swallow when you have to say you made a mistake when you didn't. The policy of "customer is always right" just doesn't make sense sometimes.

*sigh... I'll explain to my manager what happened and I'm sure she'll understand. This has happened before (not often though) and my boss has been pretty nice about it in the past. But, I always have to sign a discipline form showing my money discrepancy because it shows the company that she's doing her job and not just letting things slide.
Kaylan
08-28-2006, 03:03 PM

my friend got fired from her workplace a few weeks ago for "wrongful fraud". it wasn't even her fault, they didn't tell their employees all the details with that particular transaction, so she was made the example of. poor girl. now her parents are hiring lawyers!
hehe, so bon cop, bad cop is funny? hmmm...maybe i'll go see it if i can find someone to drag to the theatres with
Webeh
08-29-2006, 12:46 AM
I'm glad she's hiring a lawyer. She definitely deserves some compensation for being screwed over the way she was.
Right now, I'm definitely looking forward to the day that I can quit my current job or at least cut back hours. I have to do so much work and I get paid pretty much minimum wage. In the whole scheme of things, I'm getting a bad deal. But, I'm only keeping this job because the hours are flexible, which makes for the lack of pay during the school year.

Ugh! I feel miserable. I woke up at 5:30AM this morning to line up for TIFF tickets, got there to discover a gigantic line (it goes out the building, turns the corner, and turns the corner again), lined up for an hour, gambled on a different box office (after negotiating with the woman in the first line-up in front of me. She'll save my spot if the other is longer and I'll save her one if it's shorter), bought tickets, came home, fell asleep until 4:00PM feeling out of it, and I fear that I might be coming down with another cold (I just got over one a few weeks ago) during the film festival. I really hope this is just because of the season change and not a full blown cold. It takes me forever to get over colds. Last one took 3 weeks to finish and caused me to get others sick at the office during the high stress period leading up to the festival. (I felt guilty.)

what are you lining up for? tickets to what?
java_junkie
09-06-2006, 08:57 PM
what movies did you want to see? didn't you intern with them? couldn't you get like...some kind of special deal or something? atleast one free ticket? lol...probably not, but i was just wondering.
man, i realized today that i'm the biggest english nerd ever. lol....
Webeh
09-08-2006, 11:06 AM
I did get some free passes, 5 to be exact. (I only interned this year, previous years was all volunteering.) After all the volunteer shifts I picked up, I'll have 10. I just had to line up to trade them in for tickets to movies I wanted to see.
What I was hoping to get was a staff pass, but only staff that work during the festival qualified for those. (Because they don't have as much opportunity to watch movies.) My contract ended before the festival began. So, now I have to rely on free vouchers from the internship and volunteer shifts.
Yesterday I watched Fido (it has Carrie Anne Moss and Billy Connolly), which opened the Canadian section of the festival. This movie was hilarious. People found out how to control zombies with technology (an electronic collar), so they turned them all into house help, janitors, etc. Unfortunately, the collar has some faults and breaks every once in a while. When this happens, the zombie goes wild again and tries to eat people.
The main character is a little boy named Timmy and he has a zombie he named Fido. (Later, Timmy's mom falls in love with Fido. ;) ) Basically, this is Lassie but with a zombie instead of a dog. (These were lines in the movie: "Fido, fetch help!" "Good boy, Fido!") Timmy loses control of his zombie a few times and he eats people. So, not wanting his zombie sent away to the zombie pound, Timmy covers up all the deaths by burying/burning the bodies and washing all the blood off his zombie.
From the premise, this sounds like a really bad movie, but it's not. It's great! You should all definitely see it when it comes out. I haven't laughed this much in such a long time.
Other films I have tickets to is the Bothersome Man and Pan's Labyrinth. One's a black comedy revolving around suicide and the other is a horror fantasy. I used six passes on this so I could take friends with me. After this, I only have three more passes left. These, I'm not sharing. ;) I'm trying to maximize the number of movies I watch. What I will watch depends on what's available later.
Ooh! Yesterday I met Zach Braff's uncle. He was in the box office lineup behind me. First we talked about the festival and my internship. Then he dropped the leading statement, "My nephew's starring in a movie here." I asked, "What film?" He said, "The Last Kiss." After that, he started gushing about how proud he was of his nephew and about how Zach totally lucked out in getting Scrubs. It was funny. ;)

TIFF is actually a major deal. Major industry-related business happens at this time. Screenwriters get the chances to pitch their ideas, films are bought by film companies to release (this is especially good for smaller directors), there's a lot of movie related workshops held for smaller filmmakers, etc, etc...
Also, TIFF sets the stage for the Oscar race later in the year, which is also a major business thing. (Some of the bigger films here tend to major Oscar contenders later.)
And... TIFF contributes quite a bit to the local economy. ;)

 Thanks for the info Em! Now I feel real silly! haha. Well, I need the CW for OTH too, since they don't air it in Canada on any channel at the same time, they repeat it in the summer, which I obviously can't wait until...so yep. There's my dilemma.

i blame it on the froshies man. they spend a week partying so their immune systems get WAY too vulnerable. and then they spread it to the rest of us like plagues. grrrrr... but thanks, i hope get better soon. i hate being sick.

the viff will be starting in a few weeks. think i will try to get tickets to see Fido webeh. and heath ledger's film candy. yay.
VIFF. That's Vancouver I believe, right? I think I heard a bit about that festival in the news. It comes right after TIFF.
Go see Fido. I think you'll really like it. I sure laughed a heck of a lot.
As for Candy, I think I heard good things about this one. Can't remember exactly because I wasn't really following the press about this one.
I just finished my second cold of the summer. Caught it right before TIFF and was miserable for a decent chunk of the festival. But, my adrenaline (and immune system ;) ) battled it off and I was still okay to watch eight films. Yay!
Yesterday I went to the TIFF volunteer/staff afterparty. That was fun even though the outdoor power went out a couple times. The food and booze sucked this year (we had mixers last year!), but that was okay. I got over it.
When I was leaving the party the police showed up. I think they were about to shut it down for noise pollution.

Me!
I'm really glad GG is at 10PM because that means I'll be home at that time. Also, it doesn't conflict with House, Veronica Mars, or NCIS. (Easier on the VCR.) Yup, my entire TV schedule is almost entirely on Tuesday.

I'm glad it's on at 10 too. Cause I have to go volunteer at that "Nuit Blanche" thing and I have some kind of walk-through orientation tommorow. Well, if you haven't heard of it, it's this contemporary art event that goes from 7pm to sunrise (7am) the next morning and it's so awesome :). I really can't wait ;).
Woot! I can't wait to see what happens with my RL :dancing:

I heard about that. It's that Scotia Bank thing. (Or is it being run by a different bank?) Wanted to go, but I'd be in the middle of stressing over exams. That means I wouldn't really enjoy it and just end up coming home tired.
Tell me all about it when you come home from that.

Nuit blanche was awesome :). I volunteered there and they had a million different exhibits, although I only got to venture through the Bloor/Yorkville area because that's where I was stationed, although the Docents gave us a 4 hour break and another 3 hour break during the shifts  The exhibits included a wishing tree, this fog thing which was at Philosopher's walk I believe, it was REALLY gorgeous, although there was a lot of mud cause it was raining. Lots of live music and a bunch of hands on art. Other things included a ballroom dancing place where there was a DJ and balls were being thrown everywhere around the huge gym hence the name "ballroom dancing" and you could throw a ball at ANYONE in the face and they couldn't blame you cause that's what you do in there . There was also a swimming pool exhibit too, although I never really got to visit that one. And a bunch of other things I can't remember, but it was really, really interesting and it was not boring at all. I collapsed the next day though, considering I had to work at the event for 12 hours, 7pm to 7am.
I missed the Asia episode. Any highlights?

Awesomeness. I really wished I could have gone. But, I swear I'll make time for it next year. You know, considering that I'll be done school. Yay!
As for GG, it was okay. We haven't really got a great episode yet. Everything involving TJ made me grin because he's such a great brother-in-law to Luke. And, I was sensing doom and gloom for Lane's marriage. This other storyline involving her made me wince.

the episode was okay. i felt bad for lane now that she's pregnant and stuff. the asia part was funny. and the sandra oh poster was weird and really funny.

I kinda like the idea of Lor/Christopher. Maybe I'm weird, but I like them together :). They're a complete family now.
And it was on at 10pm for me tuesday night too.
AH these stupid OUAC transmission/applying/everything it's driving me up the wall. It's all about the deadlines. Let's just hope I get in somewhere

xsamie
11-28-2006, 11:48 AM
They don't do much family stuff together though do they? No nice family outings? But it's nice to see them all together.
*Lauren*
11-28-2006, 05:32 PM
^^They don't really do a whole lot as a family. But maybe in coming episodes we get to see more of that.

GG is on both the CW and ch.14 (whatever it is) in vancouver at 8pm, then it's on Global at 10pm, I think. I usually just watch it at 5pm on the early CW.

how has everyone been? Did you like the finale.
I'm still kinda....sad that RL broke up. *sigh*

wow I thought this thread was on the storage board!
The finally, well at the end I was only watching cuz I have been watching for years and I wanted to see how it ended. But the fact that Rory-Logan broke up sent a depressing message to me. But the last scene was good, ending the series in the dinner was a great idea.
