Kyle Chandler stars as Dillon High School’s newly appointed head football coach, Eric Taylor, in the NBC television series “Friday Night Lights.”
Chandler was born in Buffalo, New York, and raised in Loganville, a small farming community in Georgia. Shortly after being spotted by a talent scout, he made his move to Los Angeles where he immediately landed leading roles in television.
Most recently, he was seen in the hit medical drama “Grey’s Anatomy” and as Grant in NBC’s “The Lyons Den” starring opposite Rob Lowe. Chandler earned critical reviews for his portrayal of Jeff Metcalf in the acclaimed series “Homefront,” and gained national recognition for his work as the lead role on “Early Edition.” Other television appearances include a lead role on “What About Joan,” “And Starring Pancho Villa as Himself” and “China Beach.”
In film, his credits include the box-office hit “King Kong,” “Mullholland Falls,” “Angel’s Dance,” “Pure Country,” and “The Color of Evening.”
On Broadway, Chandler appeared as Hal Carter in “Picnic,” opposite Ashley Judd.
A drama graduate from the University of Georgia, Chandler currently lives in Los Angeles with his wife and two daughters. His birthday is September 17.

He does seem to reglect his family, but when he is there he makes an effort to spend time with them.
Oh what a great scene between the parents. Having to let Julie go sitting at that table and waiting.
You could feel everything they were feeling as most parents do.
It was absolute a fantastic played out scene and the actors nailed it. I felt what they were feeling to the letter.

How can anyone not love this man? I loved in last week's episode when Coach Taylor is trying to convince Julie how much she'll love Austin. His whole "It's very artsy and you're very artsy" "You're a balleter" speech was adorable. :)

What a fabulous character!
I loved the "Somethings wrong with this clicker," stuff, and his reaction when he found out that Matt was buying condoms.
He's a great coach, and after watching him run football drills with Julie -- a great dad as well. He always means well, and with Tami behind him giving advice, he often manages to do the right thing.

I have loved this actor in every job he has had. I don't think I've missed much. This particular role is just perfect for him. I think this family is written in a realistic manner.

I agree, Cheryl.
The only other think I've seen him in was Grey's Anatomy, and even though he was really different in there, it was still fabulous acting.
He really impresses me.

For those of you who wonder just what actors do to earn their sizable salaries (aside from the acting part), consider the following scene from NBC's post-upfront party Monday at Rockefeller Center.
For a solid hour, the cast of Friday Night Lights sat in the same formation on a set of couches having their pictures taken with a constant stream of ad folks, PR people and other assorted fans who attended the network's presentation (including, in one of the geekier moments of my adult life, yours truly; NBC has promised proof of such at one of its sites, but the pictures weren't up as of Monday evening).
That's 60 minutes of having to smile for the camera, shake hands and hear endless chatter about how much people love the show (actually, I imagine that last bit probably doesn't get too old). I'm not sure I could handle all that for that long, but to their credit, the cast pulled it off with great aplomb -- particularly Kyle Chandler, who was seated next to the stool where people took up their positions to be photographed.
The grip-and-grin picture is an upfronts staple, and typically each network sets up a few spots around its party for civilians to get visual proof of their encounters with the stars of their favorite shows. Prior to the FNL cast taking up residence on the couches, the gang from The Office had occupied the same spot; elsewhere, you could have your picture taken with some Heroes or the stars of NBC's new series.
Outside the roped-off area, meanwhile, dozens more people snapped away with their digital cameras or cell phones.
Someone from NBC would have done well to eavesdrop on the chatter in line for FNL, because from what I heard while waiting my turn, the network could have developed a new marketing strategy for the show, which is moving to its namesake night in the fall.
The promo push could be organized around this very simple principle: The ladies love them some Coach Taylor. And Tim Riggins too. If I had a dime for every time I overheard someone in line say how much they loved Chandler (who plays the coach) or Taylor Kitsch (Riggins), I'd have at a couple extra bucks in my pocket. Which doesn't really even buy a cup of coffee, but that's still like 20 people expressing the same thought in about as many minutes.
It can't be all that fun to be on display like that for an extended period of time. So cheers to you, cast of Friday Night Lights, for handling your duties like pros.

I think Kyle Chandler is great. The only things I didn't like him in were King Kong and Lion's Gate. I just can't buy him as a bad guy. I really think he would be a great Tony in the movie version of I Dream of Jeannie with Jennifer Garner as Jeannie and Jason Bateman as Roger. It would be a dream come true.
I wonder if when Coach Taylor is in town if the players still come to him instead of the new coach for advice?
I think Coach Taylor just realized he would rather be High School Coach and mold these kids before they get to college level and DIVA like attitude.
He can do more good early in their life than once they are corrupted at college level.
I believe he just found out his dream of coaching college is not at all what he wants.
It was his wake up call as well as he will never have to wonder about coaching college ball know he knows.

 I just posted the same thing in the episode thread before I came here! I don't think any of his Dillon boys would act like Antwon after playing under him.

So yeah, I'm going to start posting here.
Eric is one of my favorite characters. If he was my coach, my God, I'd cry because he's so.. Inspirational, I guess you can say. And his character touched the player's hearts, it's just amazing to watch it.

Hell yes! I find him so freakin' hilarious. The way he talks sometimes, to his family especially is oddly funny. I don't know if I'm the only one, but yeah. Like when he caught Matt and Julie on the couch with a blanket over each other, Matt left and Julie thanked him, sarcastically and Tami comes into the room and Eric goes, "It's a blanket." Something like that. It was hilarious. He's my favorite. But tied up with Matt.

He was wonderful in "Homefront" and "Early Edition." I haven't seen "Friday Night Lights" -- I don't get TV at home.

I haven't seen him in his earlier works, but I did see him in other works. But you should definetly check him out. Sorry to hear that you don't have a TV, but you can definetly watch the show on nbc.com for free and catch up because it has all of the episodes. So yeah, definetly check it out! :D

I don't know if I've seen any of the earlier things, I might have to check IMDb later .
Yesterday Iw as driving and I saw a guy who looked exactly like him, he had black sunglasses on..
I am really curious to see if Coach Taylor will be jelous this next year or will it be more focused on him dealing with his new Head of Athletics headaches?
Tammy being the Coaches Boss Season 3 is going to make this couple explosive like we have not seen them.
Cant wait to see Coach Taylor this year and I miss his Buddy time.
