The big announcement is that the SciFi Channel will be rebroadcasting the new NBC series "Heroes"! And, the lesser announcement is that they also will be filling airtime with the cancelled CBS drama "Threshold."
Here is the reported Friday Night schedule (for the fall season, all times EST):
* 6:00 PM - "Night Stalker" (Starting September 29)
* 7:00 PM - "Heroes" (Season 1 starting September 29)
* 8:00 PM - "Doctor Who"' (Season 2 starting 10/29)
* 9:00 PM - "Battlestar Galactica" (Season 3 starting 10/6)
* 10:00 PM - "Threshold"' (Starting 10/13)
So, if you find yourself in the position that you only have one DVR or TiVo, but want to watch "Vanished" or "24" or (god-forbid) "The Bachelor," you can still watch "Heroes" in the rebroadcast. This is a great strategy and I am glad NBC is taking advantage of this opportunity to gather new viewers.
Honestly, I cannot figure out why the networks do not rebroadcast their new programming during the overnight hours. Although I am sure the infomercials bring in a substantial amount of money, many additional viewers could be garnered by airing encore editions of shows during the late night hours. For example, look at "'Supernatural" (freshly added to the TV Fodder section of this website) . It will be going against "Grey's Anatomy" and "CSI." How many viewers would like to see all three of those shows, but do not have enough video recording equipment to do it? If the CW would air an encore presentation of "Supernatural" later in the evening, many more people would pick up this excellent show.
However, I am realistic. I know that until the networks change the rating system and actually count any rebroadcast numbers as true viewership, the advertisers will not pay additional rates for shows like "Supernatural." That is the root of the problem.
