A thoroughly enjoyable and satisfying season opener. The two "morning after" scenes, in Ashley's bedroom and later outside of school, were as sweet and romantic as any I've ever seen on TV. Their happy smiles; Spencer's sense of awe and wonder at her new world; their touching concern for each other's feelings; Ashley's tender consideration of Spencer's insecurity about her inexperience; Spencer's throaty invitation to Ashley to return to bed; her determined resolution to "get better"; Ashley inviting Spencer to share her precious time with her father. Who says two people being happy can't be entertaining? And Spencer's willingness to take Ashley's hand in public before coming out to the world, along with her rakish eagerness to help Ashley enact some of her fantasies, pretty much proves Spencer is past any major internal hang-ups about being gay. So I'm guessing we won't see her locking lips with Aiden anytime soon. Go Spashley!
There was definitely a certain amount of irony in watching what was represented at the beginning of last season as this perfect Carlin family spend their first scene together this season all lying to each other. Was that actually an almost evil glee in Spencer's eyes as she described "hanging out" at Ashley's and the non-existent death of her cell phone? To me, it was just confirmation of her determination to be with Ashley no matter what, including deceiving her disapproving mother.
Not to be overly vindictive, but I found it rather satisfying to see Madison taken down a peg or two. I wonder if the experience of being the dumpee for a change will improve her personality at all, or if she'll now make a beeline back to Glen. Probably the latter, but I don't really care. I sure do like Spencer's refusal to let Madison make her feel ashamed of being with Ashley, though.
I was quite relieved when what the previews implied was going to happen between Aiden and Ashley didn't, but it looked awfully close there for a minute. I was pretty disappointed with Aiden at that moment. I understand he has both history with and residual feelings for Ashley, but I thought he was good enough friends with Spencer not to do anything which would hurt her. And his even kissing Ashley, much less bedding her, would certainly do so, even though there has been no official exclusivity discussion between the two of them.
It looks like Papa Carlin is well on his way toward becoming a drunk. I only hope that when the time comes he can summon the internal fortitude to offset Mama C's inevitable meltdown when Spencer comes out (or is outed) to them. Right now he just looks pathetic, and that won't hold up well in the face of Mama C's unshakable sense of moral superiority (which seems to be curiously uncompromised in the face of her lying and cheating). At least he is willing to call out Mama on her attack dog mentality about Ashley (did you see Mama grimacing at having to actually hug Ashley in her misery?). How in the world did these two end up married? Grow a pair, Mr. C., and quickly. Your daughter needs you.
From the look on Chelsea's face at Clay's wonderful gesture of taking the pictures at her show, Clay won't be populating the nerdy virgin zone much longer.
If I were Ashley, I would get myself a lawyer, and fast. Otherwise she will find her mother being appointed the quardian of her estate until she becomes eighteen. If there is a better way for her to become penniless I don't know what it would be. Her mother is filled with bile and hatred, and nothing else. She looks at money as an entitlement, and would have no compunction whatsoever about stealing Ashley's legacy.
With as many issues as Ashley's incredibly disfunctional upbringing has saddled her with, it's actually amazing she has turned out as well as she has. In spite of her inevitably deep fear of abandonment and loneliness, she has retained the ability to love, to be a friend, to laugh off pain (at least externally), and to spit in the world's eye when it conspires to knock her down. Since her vulnerability to the pain of potential further abandonment only increases the more she cares for someone, it takes a very special person to get close to her; to get inside her; to be allowed to comfort her; to love her. She seems to realize that a very special person named Spencer is easing past the barriers thrown up by that fear. I hope she realizes how lucky she is, and doesn't let her fear make her screw things up. I wonder which of the two will be the first to express their love for the other.
Considering Ashley's lonely upbringing, I was a bit surprised at her reaction to Kyla. She was rightly furious at her Dad, but Kyla seems to be an equally innocent party in the whole mess; and someone with whom Ashley has almost every by-product of her father's lifestyle in common (except Kyla's nurturing mother). Since, unlike her own grasping mother, Ashley doesn't seem to be too obsessed by the money, I don't think the idea of sharing $25 million is an issue. I think Ashley would have spent countless hours growing up wishing she had a sister to talk to and to love her, and would take to Kyla right away. Hopefully, Spencer's quiet concern will bring Ashley's feelings toward Kyla around soon. If Ashley is still considering Kyla as nothing but an unwanted personification of her father's failings when Kyla starts getting involved with Aiden, her anger and jealousy toward Kyla could cause Ashley to do something stupid and badly hurt her relationship with Spencer. That would be bad. I like Spashley when they are all smiles, steaming gazes, and teasing banter; not when there are hurt feelings and jealousy.
Next week's trailer seems to show both escalating feelings between Spashley, and an inescapable path toward their secret becoming public. Can't wait.

2.03 Behind the Music (aired: 10/06/06)
Ashley's only had Kyla as a sister for a few weeks, and she's already sick of her. Things get ugly between the two, and a VH1 special about their dad makes the situation even worse. Oh, and the fact that Aiden's crushing on Kyla isn’t helping much either.

As usual there was a lot to like about last night's show. In fact, my only major gripe is that we are back to half hour episodes. The half hour passes too quickly!
Okay, how cute is Chelsea? Not only is she making Clay deleriously happy, but she is fast becoming a good (and non-judgemental) friend to Spencer also. The scene between the two of them in Spencer's room was my favorite. Spencer looked so very happy modeling her partywear. And her shy but giddy smile when she admitted her and Ashley's "more than friends" status to Chelsea and how "real" it was for her pretty much said it all. This girl is in love. And leave it to Clay to support her unconditionally, not to mention his knowing the VH-1 guy needed a consent form to use footage of a minor. It's interesting that the stand-up brother is the one who doesn't share her DNA. And Spencer rewards Clay's loyalty with her touching appreciation of his happiness with Chelsea.
Her rapidly dropping social status doesn't seem to have tempered Madison's personality so far. She was more than ready to spew her venom via her unsolicited harangue to Kyla about the Aiden/Ashley/Spencer "triangle". I was a bit surprised however, that she didn't glom back onto Glen when she had the chance. I have to say, the look on her face when the bartender (and club owner?) at Gray's mentioned the idea of her WORKING (!!) was worth waiting for. And again later, watching her serving drinks in her waitress uniform was priceless.
Poor Glen. Poor stupid, arrogant Glen. He thinks Madison dumped him because she was "confused", and not because he was no longer a potential meal ticket? After all, why else would anyone dump a stud duck like him? I guess he finally got set straight. I was also "thrilled" at the way he automatically figured he should be at Ashley's party even though he doesn't like her. I'm afraid this boy takes after his mama way too much. He does, though, seem to have superhuman powers of recuperation. Top professional athletes take six months to a year to recover from a torn ACL. Glen's ready to dance after a couple of weeks.
Aiden, wherefore art thou? Sometimes you just don't have a clue. Taking Kyla to the party? Okay, you're right in feeling Ashley could use some family after her lonely upbringing, but c'mon.... taking her to the party? Are you crazy? I don't know who was more upset, Ashley or Spencer.
I'm glad there was at least a small thaw between Ashley and Kyla. I understand Ashley's torment. Her father isn't there to feel her anguish and Kyla makes an easy target. But Kyla has done absolutely nothing to her, and Ashley was being unreasonable. Spencer was steadfastly loyal to Ashley when this was going on, but you could see she was uncomfortable with it. Her natural empathy allowed her to see Kyla's viewpoint and have sympathy for her.
As a Spashley fan, I was delighted to see they are becoming more touchy-feely each week as their feelings grow. Lots of little touches. Their kiss in the middle of a school walkway was bold, and it was nice to see Ashley grab Spencer's hand just prior. My only minor Spashley quibble with last night's show was that I would have preferred some more and better shots of them dancing together. And I guess a slow dance scene will have to wait until they offically go public, but I can hope......
From the previews, as misleading as they can be, it looks like a Spashley crisis is inaugurated by the meddling Mama C. when Spencer accepts a blind date with a boy rather than acknowledging she is with Ashley. I know that angers you Ashley, but have patience. She loves you and will come around soon.

2.04 Guess Who's Coming Out to Dinner (aired: 10/13/06)
Spencer's freaked by Ashley's obsessions. It's bad enough that she's totally preoccupied with Kyla and Aiden's relationship, but now she's pressuring Spencer to come out to her family. Clay's freaked too because Chelsea might be leaving forever.

This was one time where the often-irritating practice of providing misleading previews turned out to be a blessing. Based upon the promos for this episode I was prepared to be very angry at Ashley. Not only did it appear that she was giving Spencer some sort of ultimatum to come out or lose her, but she seemed to be equating Spencer's hesitancy to do so with a lack of depth in Spencer's feelings for her. These, coupled with Ashley's continuing odd fixation with Aiden, seemed to bode ill for their relationship. Ashley's coming out to an absentee father and a dis-interested mother could NEVER be equated to Spencer's situation.
Fortunately, after some shaky moments, Spashley are full speed ahead. In fact, several important milestones in their relationship were reached last night. They each offically referred to themselves as the other's girlfriend. Ashley actually referred to herself as gay instead of hiding behind "I like girls" and "you're not my type anymore" obfuscations. And, after some excellent advice (once again) from the bartender/club owner at Gray's, Ashley finally realized what (and who) was important to her and dropped, for all intents and purposes, her unhealthy Aiden obsession. Her declaration to Spencer that all of her feelings were for her was both romantic and necessary. The look on Spencer's face certainly confirmed that. Spencer must be feeling a lot more secure about things now. It was also important that Ashley realized Spencer had every right to be mad at her and to apologize for it. In fact apologizing is one thing these two do exceedingly well; another thing which bodes well for their future. And I love Spencer's spunky refusal to let Ashley get away with things. I sense mutual declarations of love are just around the corner.
It is quite possible that Maeve Quinlan is a perfectly nice person in real life, but her character is, within the confines of the story lines for the show, the personification of evil. She epitomizes most of the scariest attitudes and characteristics the mother of a closeted gay teen could have short of donning a hockey mask and wielding a chainsaw. I personally find almost nothing more annoying than that percentage of people who are not only immovable in their conviction that everything they do, think, feel, believe, etc. is right, but that they are divinely mandated to enforce their values on everyone else. Mama C. is intolerant, homophobic, arrogant, domineering and mean. She is also a liar and a cheat, neither of which seems to have had much effect on her overwhelming sense of self-righteousness. She regards herself as a paragon of human perfection. She will only be happy if Spencer were to end up as a carbon copy of her, with all of the same prejudices (Mama thinks of them as attributes), and with the "right" boyfriend, the "right" friends, going to the "right " college, and choosing the "right" career. Although Spencer has given no indication that she is "lost", "broken", or unhappy, Mama is determined to fix her. Fortunately, in spite of her justifiable fear of coming out to Mama's inevitable blow-out, Spencer is made of stern stuff. She'll follow her own path.
Aiden recently referred to Madison as "smart". I don't see it. How long does she expect to get away with altering credit card receipts before some card holder notices the billing discrepancies? By the way, how is it that a club catering almost exclusively to teens sees so much credit card business anyway? Just curious. Anyway, it was totally unsurprising to see Madison and Glen vying for Idiot Of The Week honors by attempting to hook up again. Nor was it surprising to see her ridicule Glen for his medication-induced impotence.
It was interesting to find out that much of Ashley's mother's indifference toward her stems from Ashley's coming out to her instead of solely out of hatred for her father. It was heartbreaking to see Ashley trying desperately to maintain some forlorn hope that her self-absorbed mother will eventually love her again.
I was a bit surprised when Spencer expressed her fear to Ashley of her parents' negative reactions when she comes out. Spencer's father has already as much as told her his love and support are unconditional. She has to know the problem will be only with her mother (and clueless Glen of course) and not with both parents. I only wish we could see some sign that Papa C. will serve as effective buffer between Mama C. and Spencer when the time comes. Right now he seems completely ineffectual, restricting himself to petulant comments here and there instead of trying to put his foot down. This is not good.
I have to say I'm liking Aiden and Kyla together. I wonder how much longer Kyla can run with the non-virgin-virgin deal.
It looks like Clay got some! Not a surprise. Two of the nicest people on the planet, those two deserve each other.
Unless the previews for next week are again completely misleading, it looks like Glen didn't make an immediate bee-line to Mama C. to tattle about seeing Spencer and Ashley kissing. Considering he shares most of Mama C's most repugnant characteristics, I'm surprised he didn't fall all over himself in a record-breaking dash to her with the news. Of course, being Glen he can't resist appointing himself the co-guardian (with Mama) of Spencer's heterosexuality, complete with the looks of disgust whenever he sees Ashley and Spencer touching.
As they edge slowly toward public affirmation, it is great to see Spencer and Ashley slowly become more bold in their PDA's. The charming kiss and forehead-to-forehead embrace in the car were daring indeed with a fearful mother and nosey brother only a pane of glass away. More evidence that they know what they want and will have it no matter what.

To me it will always remain a mystery; how in the world did Papa C. and Mama C. end up married to each other? It must have been all about sex, although that seems far-fetched these days when they can't stand to touch each other. Papa C. embodies most of the traits and attitudes one would choose to have in a father; unconditional love, a strong sense of empathy, a willingness for his children to forge their own identities, and a lack of any over-riding professional ambition other than to keep helping people and be with his family. The only things he may be missing are the will and the strength to effectively oppose his b___h wife when things get nasty.
There are plenty of words I could use to describe Mama C., but I hesitate to use many of them in a G-rated forum. I will say that, from inside her self-donned cloak of moral rectitude, she really only wants two things: she wants to satisfy her professional ambitions, and she wants her children to be carbon copies of herself, right down to her every narrow-minded idea of what is "right". She holds nothing but contempt for anyone, her husband included, who ever disagrees with her about what is "right", and she has a world-class talent for annoying me. Fortunately, she has only succeeded in putting her stamp on weaselly Glen, whereas Spencer and Clay have taken after their father.
Along with rampant homophobia, and the several other repugnant characteristics they share, both Glen and Mama C. have an uncommon ability to rationalize anything they do or believe as right; in other words, they are the standard for perfection and it is their moral duty to not only belittle anyone who holds a different viewpoint, but to "fix" these poor people. At first I was wondering how two people whose sense of moral superiority seems to be based in religion could have failed to read the part about "he who is without sin casting the first stone", but then I realized both of them actually believe they are "without sin" or failing. The fact that one of them is a lying, cheating, narrow-minded, arrogant b___h, and the other is a pill-popping, unmotivated, broken jock whose major claim to fame is having dated the school pincushion seems to matter not a whit. The ironic thing is that when Mama C. rails against Ashley for leading Spencer astray, she is actually grossly insulting her own daughter by presupposing she has no mind of her own and is easily manipulated by evil forces like Ashley. Nothing could be further from the truth.
I don't usually advocate violence in any form in a marriage, but if I were Mr. Carlin, I would have waited about half a second after Mama made that "sell that social worker crap to someone who buys it" remark before smacking her across the face. It's not enough that Mama seems to hold no guilt feelings whatsoever for lying to and cheating on him, and has belittled him personally on a regular basis, but this shot of venom expresses contempt for everything he stands for. Dump her once and for all, Papa, before she destroys what and whom you cherish the most.
My affection for Spencer increases every week. I love how her innocent looks conceal a steely core. Now that she has reconciled herself to being gay, and to the depth of her feelings for Ashley, she just isn't going to let anyone or anything make her feel ashamed or guilty, especially not her ludicrous brother or harridan mother. Nor any of the others spewing bias or hate. She just wants to be accepted for who she is, but if she isn't it isn't going to change her mind. She will be what she will be. You go, girl!
This must be an amazing time for Ashley right now. Her whole life she has wished for someone to love and to love her for herself. Now she has the love (no, they haven't said it, but I will) of a beautiful girl with a beautiful soul. And it has brought out in her feelings she must have never before experienced; like protectiveness and fear of failing the other person. That's why I'm willing to let her slide on the rant at the Gay/Straight club leader. It was wrong, but her heart was in the right place. Protecting Spencer is a lot more important to her than political correctness these days. And admitting that to Spencer without apology made for a sweet closing scene (aren't these two the greatest apologizers ever?).
And how cute was the teddy bear with the miniature head bandage? Pretty girly for Ashley, but yet another indication she is feeling things she has never felt before. She knew it would float Spencer's boat. And carrying Spencer's books....awww.
So where is Glen getting all of those pills he's popping? I assume Mama wrote the prescription. Shouldn't she be noticing that he's going through them way too fast? Just wondering. Maybe a nice medical ethics charge would bring her down a peg (and maybe not).
It looks like the Spashley kiss quota applied last night. We got two last week, so nothing this week. Meanwhile we get to see Madison hootchie dancing with another cheerb___h on a table, and Kyla making out with Aiden. The double standard still applies. It's too bad, that last scene in Chelsea's studio cried out for a kiss. At least we're getting some arms-around-the-waist and more "my girlfriend"s.
Each week Madsion surprises me by stooping to yet another new low. Now she has Kyla in her clutches. It does look like she's losing her iron grip on the cheerleaders. Maybe we'll get to see some comeuppance for her there.
Who doesn't love Sean? The guy continually surprises me. I'd like to see more of him, but I noticed he's dropped to last in the credits.
From the preview it looks like Spencer's BFF from Ohio is about to become a former BFF. She appears to be a Mama C./Glen clone, which I'm sure is why Mama sent for her in the first place. If she stays longer than five minutes, a hook-up with Glen is inevitable.
I'm not happy with the whole Chelsea pregnancy story line. It is just too cliche'd; the two nice people, the ones with the best prospects for the future, getting derailed by pregnancy just after finding love. I guess Clay needed some major challenge in his life to match Spencer's fear of officially coming out and Glen's pill-popping, but I wish they hadn't chosen this particular scenario.
All-in-all, another very satisfying episode. Too bad we have to wait two weeks for another.

Other than the ongoing one about how in the world Mr. and Mrs. Carlin actually ended up married to each other, the current SON mystery most intriguing to me is this one: who is "sportygrrll"?
Last season, at the beginning of "A Girl's Guide To Dating", Spencer was exchanging IM's with "sportygrrll" on the subject of how one knows they are gay and, if so, how to tell one's parents. Apparently, "sportygrrll"s parents went ballistic when she told them she was gay, so she tells Spencer she had better be sure before she tells her own parents, a sentiment Spencer shares in spades.
When I read that the continually clueless Mama C. was going to import Spencer's BFF Debbie from Ohio in some futile attempt to bring Spencer back from the brink of the Dark Side, I was thinking it would be deliciously ironic if Debbie turned out to be "sportygrrll" and did just the opposite; encourage Spencer to be herself. After all, Spencer's sexual identity crisis certainly doesn't seem like something she would be sharing with someone below BFF status, unless perhaps she knew only one of her lesser circle of Ohio friends was gay.
Well, from the previews for the next episode, it looks like Debbie is cut directly from the Mama C./Glen pattern in her attitude toward gays. This, of course, would explain why Mama C. invited her in the first place. (Mama STILL hasn't figured out that her deceptively steely daughter is not going to be swayed by anybody or anything from following her heart and mind.) But since Mama C. is so clueless when it comes to detecting substance over image (I mean she LIKED Madison, and thought Spencer was in good hands with Kelly), there is always the chance that she is mis-reading Debbie entirely.
The Debbie we APPARENTLY see from the previews may be a product of the consistently misleading nature of these previews and she may yet turn out to be "sportygrrll"; if not she is well on the way toward former BFF status. But if Debbie isn't "sportygrrll", who is? Will we ever see this person in whom Spencer trusted enough to confide her most private personal thoughts?
That's the mystery.

I hate Paula. She is more concerned about spashley over the fact that her son is a pill head.

What about when Ash has Spence practice her coming out speech to her parents.
Ash: 'Pretend I'm Paula.'
Spence: 'Mom, Ashley and I are in love.'
Ash: 'Youre both going to burn in hell. Can you pass the potatoes please?'
That was SOOO funny! lol :D

It looks like Mr. Carlin has yet to muster the courage to go against his shrew of a wife. In the sneak peak he allows her to physically drag Ashley down the stairs and throw her out the door then tell her own daughter she disgusts her with no more active response than asking her what she is doing. Way to be pathetic, Mr. C. Nice defence of your daughter.

It was great to see Papa Carlin stand up to the shrew for once. When she asked him if he was blaming her for Spencer running away and he FINALLY told her off the look on her face was priceless. I don't know which shocked her more; what he said or the fact that he said anything at all.
Then hearing him promise Spencer and Ashley he would take care of both of them was great. I'm sure the shrew has a few more bullets to fire, though.
