While this is still considerably shy of the "blockbuster" 20-plus-million numbers for Grey's Anatomy and CSI, it was still enough to make the superhero drama the highest-rated new show of the season.
A mini-marathon of the four previous episodes was screened by NBC on Sunday, and TV.com speculates this may have pushed fence-sitters into Heroes territory.
The show, created by Tim Kring, tells of a group of diverse individuals who develop superpowers as the result of some form of genetic evolution in mankind.
Among them are a politician and his brother who can both fly; a cheerleader who can heal virtually any injury, even coming back from apparent death in one episode; a cop who can read minds; an artist who can paint the future but only when he's high; a Japanese salaryman who can manipulate space and time; and a stripper whose murderous reflection can come to life.
For the first season, their nemesis would seem to be the enigmatic Sylar, a serial killer who possesses a host of powers including telekinesis and the ability to flash-freeze his victims.
