"Save the cheerleader. Save the world."

So goes the ominous dictum that culminates with tonight's episode of "Heroes," 9 o'clock on NBC.

"It's a crazy episode," said Hayden Panettiere, 17, who plays the presumably indestructible cheerleader, Claire Bennett.

Tonight's episode opens with the usual voice-over. But this time, the declaration is decidedly ominous: "We are, if anything creatures of habit, drawn to the safety and comfort of the familiar. But what happens when the familiar becomes unsafe, when the fear that we have been desperately trying to avoid finds us where we live?"

That "fear" is not limited to the Sylar, the supposed serial killer who has tracked Claire to the heartland and is determined to kill her. By the end of the episode, called "Homecoming," at least one more character will defect to the dark side.

In the same episode, Hiro (Masi Oka) is MIA after getting stuck in the past, in an attempt to right another wrong perpetrated by the dastardly Sylar. That leaves Peter (Milo Ventimiglia) as Claire's only savior.

"She just wanted to be the normal high school girl," said Panettiere of her character. "She just wanted to be the cheerleader going after the quarterback."

Fans of the show know how that turned out. (She put the QB in the hospital after he tried to force himself on her.)

Claire, unaware that the homecoming dance could be her last waltz, defies her father, who has forbidden her to leave the house. She does what any teenager would do - she sneaks out. And she puts herself, Peter and Jackie (Danielle Savre), her archrival on the cheerleading squad, in the path of the killer.

"In the beginning, [Claire] was just sort of discovering herself," said Panettiere. "Throughout the course of these past few episodes, she's starting to discover what she's meant for and who she is, which is why she's trying to find her biological parents - so she can answer questions about herself."
