Indie movie scene filmed at SHS

It's not everyday a film company rolls into your town, to film a movie at your high school, using your fellow townspeople as extras.

So when Moody Street Pictures showed up with cameras and clipboards to shoot a scene in the Sharon High School boy's locker room, the excitement was uncontainable.

The movie, called "Black Irish," is written and directed by L.A.'s Brad Gann, and stars Brendan Gleason ("28 Days Later," "The General"), as well as Michael Angarano, Tom Guiry, and Melissa Leo Emily VanCamp.

Several students at Sharon High were fortunate enough to try their hand at being "extras."

"I've never done anything like this," said Mat Devorkin, a member of the class of 2006. "I've been studying film for half the year and I thought it would be a new experience. A chance like this doesn't happen all the time."

"I wanted to do this because it seemed like an interesting experience in which I could take out something that would benefit me in the future," said classmate Scott Pearce.

Another classmate, Zach Heyman explained that when it comes to film, it's not so much the acting that interests him.

"I'm more interested in the business aspect of it," he said. "If I can get behind the scenes I'll get a better gist of what's going on."

Meghan Masterson, a senior next fall, said she is interested in editing, among other things.

"I love film," she said. "I want to produce films when I grow up. I want to be an editor and a producer."

For a while, no one seemed to know why Sharon High was the school of choice for the locker room scene.

Rumor spread through the halls that it was chosen for its very old-looking, very stinky locker room.

"Old yes, stinky no," said Miriam Marcus of Moody Street Pictures, in an e-mail interview. "As you might imagine, smell does not translate on screen. I am told by the production designer that she and the director liked the look of the locker room and felt it matched the public school that we are using in South Boston."

Jackie Clarke and Janet Picheney, teachers at Sharon High, encouraged the students to participate.
"I recruited the extras," said Clarke. "Mrs. Picheney asked me to see if we could get some kids from our film classes to be involved and that's what we did. We were told to wear red and blue, appropriate attire, no logos, no short skirts."
Emily Colman, a senior next fall, was also one of several students who waited patiently for the late film crew, to try her hand at acting.

"I think it would be a real fun experience to have, and something that you can always remember," she said. "I want to be an actress."

Heather Murphy, who is part of the film crew at Moody Street Pictures, provided a written plot summary for Black Irish.

"This tale chronicles the trials and tribulations of Cole McKay, 15, an obedient son who yearns for the attentions of his emotionally remote father. Cole is by turns nurtured and abandoned by the rest of his family; his sister Kathleen, older derelict brother Jack, and rigid mother Margaret.

As the tale unfolds each family member undergoes a crisis of their own, their individual arcs interweaving until a heart-wrenching climax."

Brad Gann's independent film "Black Irish" is scheduled to come out in 2006.

The only time they have been seen together was in October 2004 in Los Angeles, and that's it. Emily is a very shy person and tends to keep her personal life under wraps. Emily knows Benjamin probably because Sarah Drew and him are second cousins. Maybe it was a stunt, I don't know. He is so much older than her anyway. She has said they are just friends.

Hazel eyes are usually flecked with green or gray. Hers isn't. Not enough hints of color like that to make them hazel, but still pretty, though :)

You could always save the picture by right click on the mouse, go to save picture and then upload it to photobucket.com (you have to register for photobucket first). Click on the browse button in photobucket (it's on the right) then find your picture in the pop up menu and click on that. Then hit submit. When the photo is successfully uploaded copy the URL below the picture. You can use that URL to post picture at different forums by pasting it between and .

I know nothing about training to be a dancer, but I assume math is involved since you have to learn how to count the number of steps and such you have to take while dancing, you know? For the language thing, I'm sure dance studios are stretchable on that and will help you try to understand even with the language barrier.

People spell it VanCamp, Vancamp, Van Camp, and some others but I believe VanCamp is the right one :)

If you're talking about Ephram and Amy in New York from the first episode of Season 3, "For Every Action", I think they may have filmed there but I'm not entirely sure. They could've well Photoshopped the picture and put New York backgrounds behind the pictures of them. Who knows?

Montreal and other places of Canada usually have snow during the winter so I would think that yes, they had it there during January.

Hey everybody...but has anyone actually seen Black Irish yet (b/c Emily's in it)? I haven't gotten the chance to see it because unfortunately independent films never come out where I live in Florida. But if anyone has seen it yet, can you tell me how it was?

To answer your question: No, I have not seen it but good news - it'll be out on DVD January 8, 2008 :) I believe the theatrical run for the film has ended now. We just have to wait for the DVD release which is less than 2 months away :D
