Last July, the cast and producers of Heroes sat before critics on press tour like unknown Idol contestants. They seemed like nice kids, shame the show was going to get squeezed off the schedule by all those high powered serialized dramas starring movie stars like Ray Liotta.

Six months later, Liotta's back leaving messages for Marty Scorsese while Masi Oka, a 30-year-old techy who still works the occasional shift for Industrial Light & Magic, is mobbed by reporters as the breakout star of the hottest new show on TV.

Oka plays Hiro Nakamura, a computer geek from Tokyo who discovers he can somehow tap into that most sacred of sci-fi cliches, the "space-time continuum," allowing him to jump back and forth in time.

The jump ahead from this time last year has been no less astounding for Oka. "One year ago I was literally auditioning for this pilot, running around trying to get a job," he said at NBC's Wednesday night press tour party. "Now people recognize me on the street. Monday, I'm in this room with all this amazing talent at the Golden Globes. Artists like Stephen Spielberg are coming up to me and saying I love your show. That's surreal."
