At least three people were killed when an interstate bridge in Minneapolis, Minnesota, collapsed Wednesday evening, plunging cars and chunks of concrete into the Mississippi River below.

There were "lots" of injuries, said the state Homeland Security and Emergency Management Department.

The nearby University of Minnesota Medical Center received "just a handful" of injuries from the accident, spokesman Ryan Davenport said.

"One of our hospitals has five patients so far, and the other on the other side of the river has none," he said.

The accident occurred shortly after 6 p.m. (7 p.m. ET). There were 50 to 100 cars on the bridge at the time, according to early estimates. Witnesses described a "dust cloud" as the bridge collapsed.

Lt. Amelia Huffman of the Minneapolis Police Department told CNN affiliate KARE it was "not clear at this point what caused the collapse" of the Interstate 35W bridge near University Avenue.

"We have personnel there in the rescue effort," she said. "I have never seen anything remotely like this before."

The Department of Homeland Security had no indication that terrorism played a role in the disaster, Sen. Norm Coleman, R-Minnesota, told CNN.

Shortly after the collapse, a tractor trailer was burning on the bridge.

Crews have been using boats to help remove people from the water, bringing them up on the river bank, but bad weather moving into the area could hamper the rescue efforts.

"I don't know how much more could go bad here, but right now, we've got the perfect storm brewing out there, so we're trying to work as hard as we can to pull people out of there" said Kristi Rollwagen, deputy director of Minneapolis emergency preparedness.

Aerial footage showed the middle of the bridge caved in, lying in the Mississippi River, with cars both on top and submerged in the water.

Witnesses told CNN a school bus filled with children was on the bridge when it collapsed, but they also said the bus did not drop into the water and it appeared that the children had all been evacuated.

The main part of the collapsed span is not submerged, but the span clearly separated from the land-based sections of the highway on both the north and south ends of the bridge.

Mark Lacroix, who lives on the 20th floor of an apartment building near the bridge, told CNN he saw the last seconds of the collapse.

"I heard this massive rumbling and shaking basically and looked out my window," Lacroix said. "It just fell right into the river." Watch Lacroix describe the collapse »

He said there had been construction work on the bridge in recent weeks.

Nighttime construction took place on the bridge Tuesday night and was to take place again Wednesday night, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation.

The highway would have been restricted to a single lane in both directions from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. both nights.

I live in Minneapolis and it is so scary. I know people who cross that bridge every day, to there and back and there again. I've crossed that bridge before. It's so incredibly scary. I'll repost my thoughts from the American Thread now...

Oh my god, 35W in Minneapolis just collasped over the Mississippi River!!! It's so terrifying - our cell phones don't work because the circuits are so busy. I've been calling my friends to make sure that they're okay, but now I'm really scared of bridges.

My mom works downtown and she was standing on the Stone Arch Bridge, watching all of this happen.

^^must be scary to watch it all in front of her like that....

One of my best friends growing up lives in Minneapolis and I've been trying to get in contact with her and her family about it

edit*talked to Natalie today so that was nice...learned that after work she went to her parents house rather than back to the university which would of meant taking the bridge so glad she went home! :) everyone else though involved...my prayers are with them. such a terrible thing to have happen

When I turned on the news and saw this I was mortified, especially since the bus was the first thing I noticed in the shot. Things like this are really upsetting.

It's a horrible thing, but given the circumstances, I have to say that it's lucky it wasn't a lot worse.

I would be interested to know exactly what made the bridge collapse.

Well, I heard they were in the middle of making adjustments to it? i dont even know if thats true, ive only heard it once, but if it is, it may of been something that was done wrong when that was taking place?

The structure probably needed to be reset and everything. I heard that there are a total of 7 dead, 20 missing, and there were 50 cars still in the water. Things may have changed I haven't heard or seen anything new lately. I've been praying for the loses and the families. I also created something in Tribute to the Fallen (soldiers, too). I hope ya'll enjoy it.

I heard they had talked about making repairs & updates to the bridge, but had decided against it. Sad.

It's amazing that the casualty list is relatively small, considering the rush hour and baseball traffic. I've always been a little nervous driving over bridges - and we have several major ones around Pensacola - but the only damage we've had (so far, knock wood) has been during hurricanes.

Now, that this has happened, Hopefully they won't let another Bridge not get fixed. Is there any new word on victims and such?

No..the list of dead is 5/6 I think and about 8 are still missing.
