The privileged prep school teens on Manhattan's Upper East Side first learn that Serena van der Woodsen (Blake Lively, "The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants") is back in town the way they learn all the important news in their lives ?? from the blog of the all-knowing albeit ultra-secretive Gossip Girl. No one knows Gossip Girl's identity, but everyone in this exclusive and complicated vicious circle relies on her website and text messages for the latest scoop. Even Serena's closest friend, Blair Waldorf (Leighton Meester, "Entourage"), is surprised to find that Serena has suddenly ended her self-imposed exile to boarding school and returned to Manhattan.

Once the Upper East Side's most notorious party girl, Serena's reasons for returning are mysterious, although they may have something to do with her younger brother Eric (Connor Paolo, "Alexander"). Whatever the reasons, the change in Serena is obvious, especially to Blair, whose friendship with Serena has always been competitive and difficult. When Serena was out of the picture, Blair enjoyed her time in the spotlight and she has no intention of going back to living in Serena's shadow. Their uneasy relationship is further complicated by Blair's boyfriend Nate (Chace Crawford, "The Covenant"), a young man uneasy with all the privileges that have been handed to him by his high-powered father Howie "The Captain" Archibald (Sam Robards, "The West Wing"). Now that Serena is back, Blair will have to fight to hold onto Nate's attention. It also remains to be seen whether Blair's loyal lieutenants ?? Katy (newcomer Nan Zhang) and Isabel (newcomer Nicole Fiscella) ?? will remain by her side or break ranks to follow Serena.

The tension between Blair and Serena isn't lost on anyone in this crowd, since they all live for gossip and scandal ?? along with fashion, shopping and partying in Manhattan's trendiest hot spots. This is a world you have to be born into, full of wealth, power, and people like Chuck (Ed Westwick, "Children of Men"). A friend of Nate's since childhood, Chuck leads a reckless life, and constantly pushes Nate to explore his dark side.

The proverbial fish-out-of-water at the prep school are Dan (Penn Badgley, "John Tucker Must Die," "The Bedford Diaries") and his sister Jenny (Taylor Momsen, "Paranoid Park," "How The Grinch Stole Christmas"), middle-class kids whose background keeps them on the fringes of this exclusive clique. Dan and Jenny are attending the school at the insistence of their father Rufus (Matthew Settle, "Into The West"), a former rocker turned art gallery owner, determined to give his kids a first-class education. Rufus has a history with Serena's mother Lily (Kelly Rutherford, "Melrose Place"), a socialite who hides her past as a dancer and rock groupie. When a chance encounter brings Dan to Serena's attention, he suddenly finds himself dating the girl of his dreams. The more Dan discovers about the real Serena, the more he's challenged to make sense of her world. Dan's sister Jenny is the youngest of the group and wants desperately to be accepted. The price she'll have to pay for popularity will take a toll, but at the moment, Jenny is just thrilled to have entry into this glamorous world.

Dan and Serena's relationship is further complicated by the arrival of Dan's friend Vanessa (casting TBD), a Brooklyn rebel and loner who doesn't approve of Serena's world of money, fashion shows and fundraisers. Vanessa's attempts to pull him back to his roots will cause friction between Dan and Serena.

Keeping track of the shifting friendships, jealousies and turmoil in this wealthy and complex world isn't easy, but it's what Gossip Girl does best.

Found this in Toronto Star TV guide

"People are going to be making these comparisons, I guess," shrugs Stephanie Savage, co-creator of the past TV hit "The OC" and the new series "Gossip girl" on CTV and CW this fall. But she winces when I describe her new show as "The OC goes east"

"Ouch! Not true at all, " Savage quickly retorts. "I happen to think it's a completely different concept. this one is based on a well read series of novels for teenaged girls (by Cecily von zeigesar) which first hit the book scene in 2001. The protagonists are females whereas in The OC two young males predominated."

The plot has an anonymous gossip columnist of Manhattan's younger set named Gossip Girl (voiced by Kristen Bell) following the larger than life exploits of teens living at the high end of the New York city spectrum. The tales includes large dollops of sex, adult words and casual drug and alcohol use. As the books grew in popularity so did the concerns about them with some critics of teen lit, labeling them dangerous and too salty for the young and impressionable audience.

So here's a paradox: the books teenaged girls are reading are not the ones adults arond them would like them to be reading. Is it the same with TV's version?

"that's a challenge we had to face right at the start," agrees Savage. "We stick by TV's standards and practices meaning the language is toned down considerably. We made some basic plot changes, too. In our storyline Blair Waldorf (Leighton Meester) emerges as more of the bad girl, the villain, although with redeeming features that the viewers will find out about as the story goes forward. the good girl, SErena van der Woodsen (Blake Lively) has secrets we'll untangle as we go along - in the books her brother was older - he's younger here 'cause she needed an understanding and impressionable sibling"

Serena and Blake symbolize the two sides of GG just as Ryan and Seth personalized those differences in The OC. Savage says it was essential the series be shot in New York city and not someplace else - like Toronto.

Down in the hotel hallway sits Meester in her hotel suite. First impressions: she has turned brunette for this part. "Had to," she shrugs. "Serena is the blonde here. Did it bother me? Not really, it's just the time it'll take to keep it this way."

You'll notice Meester from 24 where she was Ali, House where she was Ali, and Veronica Mars where she was Carrie. Now she's getting ready to settle down for at least several seasons of spinning evil.

"Oh come on!" she laughs. "Blair is all of 17. She's thinking what every 17 year old girl thinks about; boys and clothes. Can she help it if she's got an expense account at Saks or wherever? And a chauffeured limo? And her mom's apartment is to die for? I see her as hurt- her best friend Serena ditched her without explanation and now plans getting back Nate (Chace Crawford) Blair's boyfriend."

Penn Badgley next door is also 21 and a veteran of TV drama. "I try not to get too excited," he says certainly because two previous outings The Mountain and The Bedford Diaries each lasted less than a season. "The pilot was easy to shoot, they know what they're doing. I think this is the one that cold zoom off. But I'm 21 - I think I can just barely make it as an 18 year old, capturing that naivete again."

Gossip Girl airs Tuesdays at 7 pm on CTV and Wednesdays at 9 pm on CW starting this fall.

Following the premiere of AMERICA’S NEXT TOP MODEL, GOSSIP GIRL comes from “The O.C.” producers Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage and based on the New York Times best-selling young-adult book series of the same name. The show features an ensemble cast of new and veteran actors, including Blake Lively (“The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants”) and Leighton Meester (“Surface”), and focuses on the struggle for social supremacy among teens from both sides of the tracks in a posh Manhattan prep school.

To accommodate this new premiere schedule, AMERICA’S NEXT TOP MODEL will now have a one-hour premiere on September 19 (8:00-9:00 p.m. ET), instead of a two-hour premiere as previously announced.

Leighton Meester Dishes about "Gossip Girl"

The sudsy "Gossip Girl" has been one of the most talked-about shows at the TCA press tour. At a bustling party for The CW's stars the other night, I pulled aside Leighton Meester, who plays Blair, for some scoop on her role in the show. Here are some highlights of our conversation:

On the best part of playing Blair: "She kind of is a quintessential bitch, and I would say that's awesome and I love to play that — believe me, it's really really fun. But it's not just that, and that's the best thing. She has all these issues that she's dealing with that I think a lot of young women are going to be able to relate to and look up to. She's very vulnerable and very insecure, and everybody, obviously, can relate to that. She's dealing with issues of friends and family and, you know, love, boyfriend, school, body image, whatever. And she's dealing with that under a lot of scrutiny. It's so much pressure, and I think she takes a lot of that out on herself."

On reading the Gossip Girl books: "I actually read the script knowing that they were based on books, and I was like, 'I have to get my hands on these books, I have to!'" But now I'm really kind of wary to keep reading. I don't want to start off and be disappointed or spoil it — and also because I don't think [the show]'s going to follow precisely along with the books. Which, you know, it shouldn't. It should have its own life."

On playing a character people already know: "I've met a lot of girls who really love the books, and they really mean something to them, and my character means something to them, which is just really wonderful. It's so wonderful, even though it's kind of scary and weird to play something that somebody might feel really strongly about who they are. I'm kind of fearful someone's going to come up and and be like, 'Blair wouldn't do that!' But I feel like they're going to be really happy. Everybody that I've met that has been really into the books, they are absolutely thrilled."

On how she relates to her character: "I feel like she's got really good things about her that I would like to think I have too. In some respects she's really confident, and she's really cool, and she's sweet, and she's super smart, and really driven, and she knows what she wants, and she's obviously well dressed. But aside from that there's some things that are a huge challenge and I really will admit that it's kind of intimidating."

On Blair's insecurities: "I can definitely see how her mother makes her insecure, and that's sort of the beginning point to how she reacts with everybody else, how she reacts with even her best friend, who she is so jealous of and so insecure about. And she's so freaked out about being the most beautiful girl in the room."

On mean girls: "I've wondered since my first day in school ever if people are just inherently mean or bad or how they get that way. ... I think probably I have been that [mean] girl, and you know, somebody thinks about it for the rest of their life, and that's how they're going to remember me, which is really sad, cause I'm not! ... I think people can be nice, but I think especially in high school when they kind of feel that they have nothing better to do and the only most important thing is high school, they tend to be mean."

TOP MODEL and GOSSIP GIRL Win Their Time Periods in Teens and Female Teens; Lifting The CW to Wednesday’s Top Network in These Core Demos

October 4, 2007 (Burbank, CA) – The CW’s hot new drama GOSSIP GIRL posted week-to-week gains in its third outing in all key demos, with increases of 6% in adults 18-34 (1.7/5), 13% in women 18-34 (2.7/7), 18% in adults 18-49 (1.3/3), 18% in women 18-49 (2.0/5) and 12% in viewers (2.8mil), according to preliminary live plus same day Nielsen ratings for Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2007.

AMERICA’S NEXT TOP MODEL ranked second in its time period among adults 18-34 adults 18-34 (2.6/8) and women 18-34 (4.1/11), behind only ABC. In fact, TOP MODEL was just 0.1 of a point behind the much-hyped premiere of “Pushing Daisies” in women 18-34.

“Gossip Girl” saw a 21% increase with women 18-34 (3.37rtg v. 2.79rtg), 20% increase among adults 18-34 (2.34rtg v. 1.95rtg) and 11% increase in female teens (5.51rtg v. 4.97rtg) who recorded and watched the show up to 7 days after premiere compared to those who only watched live during its scheduled Wednesday 9-10pm time period. “Gossip Girl” continues to also be a hit on different platforms like iTunes, where the two most recent episodes continue to rank among the top 5 downloaded shows on the site.

Love how JS and Staff are picketing in NYC instead of LA.

I think that they are doing the right thing....So for every box set of a TV show season the writers see 2 cents. So if a fan bought 4 season of OC the writers saw 8 cents for 4 years of work per customer. That sucks.

The Paley Center for Media (formerly the Museum of Television & Radio) on Tuesday announced plans for its 25th annual William S. Paley Television Festival, taking place March 14-27 at a new location, the Cinerama Dome at the ArcLight Cinemas in Hollywood.

Among the honorees will be producer-writer Judd Apatow and two freshman series, ABC's "Pushing Daisies" and the CW's "Gossip Girl." Additional details and the complete schedule for will be announced Feb. 4, with tickets going on sale to Paley Center members Feb. 7. Scoop! The Truth About the Mischa Barton Gossip

Their ears didn't deceive them: Those whispers that Gawker.com overheard about Mischa Barton being approached for a part on Gossip Girl, I can now report, are 100 percent true. What isn't 100 percent is whether or not a deal will be struck for her to play the recurring role of Georgina Sparks, a scheme queen who brings Serena's checkered past screaming into her present.

Guess if ever there was an ax to grind between Gossip monger Josh Schwartz, who killed Barton off of The O.C., and the starlet, that hatchet was buried along with the nubile body of Marissa Cooper. Mischa Barton Turns Down Gossip Girl Role

Some hot gossip: Mischa Barton won’t be joining the cast of CW’s Gossip Girl.

TV Guide reported that Barton, 22, had been approached to play Georgina Sparks, an old friend of reformed party girl Serena van der Woodsen (Blake Lively).

But her rep tells Usmagazine.com, “She will not be on the show. She was approached, but her reps passed.”

Barton is now in Paris attending Fashion Week and promoting her upcoming drama Closing the Ring.

The actress — who was charged with DUI and marijuana possession this past week from a December arrest — last appeared on the Fox hit The O.C. Her character was killed off in 2006.

Despite rumors that she was ready to leave, she told Newsweek it was the producers’ decision to write her off the show.

"But I really think it's best to do movies now," she said at the time.

March 03, 2008 (Burbank, California) - The CW announced early pickups of six series today, including the network's signature reality hit, AMERICA'S NEXT TOP MODEL, four dramas and one comedy. All six series will return for the fall season.



The network's most popular series, AMERICA'S NEXT TOP MODEL will return with mega-star Tyra Banks for cycles 11 and 12. Returning dramas include the buzz-worthy freshman hit GOSSIP GIRL and ONE TREE HILL, returning for a sixth season. These three series are the top-ranked shows on television with a concentration of women 18-34 viewers.



Also renewed were the long-running Thursday night team of SMALLVILLE, which will begin its eighth season, and SUPERNATURAL, which will begin its fourth season. In addition, the critically acclaimed comedy EVERYBODY HATES CHRIS will return for season four.

Coming soon to The CW's guilty pleasure semi-hit Gossip Girl: The return of Bad Serena (Blake Lively), the introduction of uber-bitchy Georgina Sparks (Michelle Trachtenberg), a building war between Blair (Leighton Meester) and Jenny (Taylor Momsen) and, if fans are truly lucky, one Gay Jewish Monkey.

These whole-truths, half-truths and blatant falsehoods were gleaned over the weekend at the William S. Paley Television Festival's lively panel for Gossip Girl, a show whose fans may not rival Buffy the Vampire Slayer cultists in pure devotion, but they sure have higher-pitched squeals.

Unlike several other shows being presented at this year's Paley Fest, Gossip Girl is actually back in production, so there were actually minor spoilers to be gleaned at the Saturday (March 22) event.

While the second half of the Gossip Girl season was originally arced for nine episodes, the since-settled writers strike has reduced that order to only five, which executive producer and co-developer Stephanie Savage described as a boon.

"It's just pure adrenaline storytelling from here to the end," Savage promised. "There are no D-storylines, only A's."

When we last left the girls who gossip, Blair's status had been dragged through the mud by an anonymous blogger, leaving her a social pariah, but don't expect that to make Blair suddenly sweet and meek.

"It's really fun and I would like to say a challenge to be bitchy," Meester said, "But not too much."

It doesn't take much impetus to bring out Blair's unpleasant side, but Serena has mostly been all sweet and reformed since returning to New York City, but don't expect that to last too long.

"It's like Serena's superpower is Bad Serena," executive producer and co-developer Josh Schwartz said.

It sounded, though, like nobody on the Gossip Girl dais relished the idea of being innocent.

"I'd like to see Dan dirtied up," said Penn Badgley. "He's too sweet and nice. It could be that that's on the horizon."

"It is," added Schwartz.

It was already announced that Trachtenberg will be joining the cast for an arc playing a girl from Bad Serena's past, but what about that pesky Gay Jewish Monkey.

Well, the first thing you have to know here is that Cecily von Ziegesar (who I desperately want to call "Cecily Van Der Snoot" for reasons I can't explain), the creator of the Gossip Girl books, loves what Schwartz and Savage have done for the small screen.

"I'm just overwhelmingly happy," she said on Saturday. "No offense to anybody, but my expectations were just so low."

Von Ziegesar hadn't seen Schwartz and Savage's previous work on The O.C., but it still made her nervous, as she put it, "I was like 'Oh God, this is going to be on a beach and Nate is going to be a lifeguard and Serena's going to be a beach volleyball player.'"

But just because von Ziegesar was "peeing her pants" (her colorful words, not mine) when she saw the pilot, doesn't mean that she was without suggestions to bring the TV show back into the universe of the books.

"Vanessa (Jessica Szhor) has to shave her head and Chuck (Ed Westwick), I'm sorry, but you have to get a monkey," von Ziegesar said.

Now fans of the books know that Chuck's monkey coincides with a particular period of sexual exploration on his part. And those in attendance at the Paley know that one of Lively's initial stipulations going out for the role was that she wouldn't have to work with a monkey. But could the production kill multiple birds with a single stone? Session moderator Tim Stack asked Schwartz where the gay characters were hiding.

"The only question we get more than 'Where are the gays?' is 'Where are the Jews?'" Schwartz said, before immediately hitting on "Gay Jewish Monkey!"

As he put it, "Season two writes itself."

Then again, von Ziegesar also expressed displeasure with the size of Jenny's breasts, a major trait in the books, telling coltish 14-year-old Momsen, "I mean, you haven't really gone through puberty yet."

Ick.

A couple other quick tidbits from the Paley:

Szhor landed the role of Jessica not after auditioning, but after showing up at a BBQ at Schwartz's house. "You opened the door and I said 'That's Vanessa,'" Schwartz said, with Savage adding "I had to go home and IMDB her to make sure she was actually an actress."
After Do Over, The Mountain and Bedford Diaries, Badgley had concerns at getting the Gossip Girl script. As he put it, "I'd done three other WB series and I was like 'Oh God. Now it's The CW. Can I go back there?"
Originally, Vanessa was supposed to beat Serena at Guitar Hero in one product placement-tastic episode, but Lively was having none of that. The actress, who said that she's entered tournaments, boldly declared, "I'm pretty incredible at it. It's my No. 1 skill." Lively later admitted that really her expertise on the game is only at medium level, prompting Badgley, when describing his own gifts on the actual guitar to say, "Yeah, but I'm nothing impressive. I'm maybe medium."

Gossip Girl's Ed Westwick: Single and Ready to Mingle!

Like the Jody Watley song, Ed Westwick is 'looking for a new love, baby.'


"I'm very single," the Gossip Girl star, 20, admitted at the John Adams premiere held at MOMA in NYC on March 3.

When OK! caught up with Ed back in October, he was deeply involved in a relationship with Louise Shaw, who hailed from his hometown of Stevenage, England. He bragged about making her a full English breakfast complete with bacon, eggs, sausage and baked beans.


But now that his situaton has changed, what does this dashing Brit look for in a woman?

"Good sense of style and confidence," he tells OK!. As for him, potential love interests should know he can't get enough of the board game Monopoly and doesn't dig McDonald's.

"That food is so bad at McDonald's," Ed says. "It's really not that great."

So what else can his dates expect? "I'm a lounge guy. I love playing pool. I love finding someplace where it's quiet enough that you can control the jukebox and get on with your life."

Ed also loves to hang with his Gossip Girl castmates Chace Crawford and Penn Badgely, but he stays away from alcohol — "I'm underage, man!"

Because his character is a villain on the show, Ed says some people are wary of him. How does he prove them wrong? "I take everybody I meet out to dinner," he jokes.

Taylor MomsenGood morning, Upper East Siders. If that venti mocha non-fat latte didn't wake you up, maybe the news of a little "Gossip Girl" competition will.

The producers of The CW's hit teen drama are contemplating a spinoff series that revolves around a girls boarding school, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Loosely based on "The It Girl" books by Cicely von Ziegesar, who also wrote the original "Gossip Girl" teen book series, the spinoff would follow the social misadventures of a popularity-hungry teen who enters the Waverly Academy boarding school. There, the social outsider reinvents herself as a popular girl, but finds that she needs to watch her back around her so-called friends.

In the books, the teenager is Jenny Humphrey, who's mortified after appearing in a teen magazine in only her underwear and endures other embarrassing situations. When she makes one mistake too many, she's forced to leave the Constance Billard School for Girls and head to Waverly.

On the CW show, Jenny is played by Taylor Momsen. The producers could stay true to the books and move Momsen over to her own show, or they could introduce a new character this season who will get spun off later.

The CW has not commented on the possible spinoff or if they are interested in picking it up. If they refuse, the show could be shopped to a competing network.

Leighton Meester: Racy Gossip Girl Ads Are ‘Smart’ and ‘Cool’

Critics and parents may be seeing red over the latest round of racy Gossip Girl ads, but the show’s stars don’t mind at all.

“We just end up seeing it on a billboard somewhere,” Leighton Meester told Access Hollywood at the Teen Choice Awards Sunday. “But I think that it’s smart and it’s fine and it’s cool.”

The ad campaign, which launched last April when the show came back from hiatus, has continued into the summer with irreverent print ads featuring racy scenes from the coming season and negative critic reviews of the CW show — used to promote its drama.

“They’re very smart,” said Chace Crawford, who plays Nate Archibald on the show. “Everybody keeps saying they’re so racy, of course they’re racy, but you say they’re smart.”

Smart, maybe. Controversial, definitely. And the show has no plans to stop with its headline-grabbing antics, including some new rhetoric being introduced on the show.

“There’s a lot more [language],” Meester said. “I say Bass-hole, I say something else, but it’s all Chuck Bass-related.”

For his part, Ed Westwick, who won Favorite TV Villain at the awards for his naughty portrayal of Bass on the show, is a huge fan of the ad campaign.

The Gossip Guys on Fame, Fans & Overcoming ‘Gayface’

A year ago, no one knew their names. Now, after getting chased around New York by schoolgirls and going to every posh party in the city, the three guys of Gossip Girl are realizing just how famous they’ve become.

In an interview with Details magazine, Chace Crawford, Penn Badgley and Ed Westwick shared their craziest experiences since starring on the CW show.

“We have a lot of older fans,” Badgley said. “I get a lot of guys coming up to me who are like, ‘Oh man, my wife loves the show.’ Couple of drinks later they come up and they’re like, ‘You know what, I love Dan.’ And they probably watch the show more than their wives.”

With the fans, of course, come the paparazzi and the rumors. Badgley has learned to tune out the comments on his relationship with costar and girlfriend Blake Lively. “One of the things that’s been my bread and butter with all these television shows I’ve done is that I don’t give a sh—,” he said.

Crawford, 23, may have the worst luck with Internet rumors. “Model turned actor, dime a dozen, eye candy, doesn’t know what he’s doing … and Perez Hilton says I have ‘gayface,’” he said. “So on top of everything else, I have to overcome gayface.”

His character, Nate Archibald, just stopped being a hooker for his ex-girlfriend’s boyfriend’s stepmother, and he still says Nate is too sweet. “I’m hoping for a fall from grace for Nate. Five years from now, I better have murdered someone!”

The other two also have thoughts on the direction their characters should go. Badgley thinks Dan is too judgmental and wants to explore his dark side, but Westwick thinks the opposite for bad boy Chuck. “Chuck’s just this vain kind of metrosexual Manhattan eccentric living in a flash world,” Westwick says. “He’s just mischievous. In the second season, you will see him do more of the good-guy thing.”

Whether their alter egos are good or bad, the Gossip guys are hot and enjoying their moment in the spotlight.

Gossip Girl's Taylor Momsen Hospitalized

Gossip Girl actress Taylor Momsen has been hospitalized with a serious throat infection, according to her doctor Shawn Nasseri.

"She has been hospitalized for a severe, potentially life-threatening throat infection since Sunday," Nasseri said in a letter provided by Momsen's manager.

Fortunately, the doctor predicts that Momsen, 15, will be fine. "After aggressive antibiotics and medications, she is expected to make a full recovery in the next three to five days."

Momsen hopes to return to Gossip Girl's New York City set by the end of the week, the CW network says in a statement.

"Taylor Momsen is a beloved member of our Gossip Girl cast and we are happy to report she is on the road to a speedy recovery," says the statement. "We all look forward to her planned return to work on Friday."
