Hollywood actor JOHNNY DEPP has donated $2 million (#1 million) to the London hospital that saved his daughter's life.

The star was so grateful to the staff at Great Ormond Street children's
hospital for treating eight-year-old Lily-Rose last year (07) he felt compelled
to write them a large check.

The youngster was admitted to the medical center last March (07) after
contracting the life-threatening E.coli bacteria which caused her kidneys to
fail.

Depp and his family were in London while he was filming Sweeney Todd: The
Demon Barber of Fleet Street when Lily-Rose was taken ill and production had to be halted while the actor maintained a bedside vigil for his sick daughter.

Lily-Rose recovered and was discharged nine days later, and Depp has been
quick to praise the staff at the hospital for all their efforts.

He says, "It was the most frightening thing we have ever been through. It was hell. But the magic was that she pulled through beautifully.

"Great Ormond Street was terrific, a great hospital."

To show his gratitude Depp offered a substantial donation and invited five
doctors and nurses who cared for Lily-Rose to attend the party for Sweeney Todd last week (beg07Jan08).

Disney, who made Depp's Pirates of the Caribbean films, has also donated $20 million (#10 million) to Great Ormond Street to help fund redevelopment of the hospital site.

Lily-Rose is Depp's daughter by long-time girlfriend Vanessa Paradis. The
couple also has a son, Jack, who is five.

That's awesome that he would do that, but he probably still had to pay a huge bill

That was pretty great of him but he seems a pretty great guy all around really.:)
I don't think he would've had to pay a huge bill. The UK has the National Health Service so everyone can get medical care that they need. Saying all that though, i'm not sure if it includes visitors to the country

wow! that is great. i work at the microbiology lab on my campus every summer.
and our main title of our job description is to try to get e. coli bacteria out of other
bacteria and chemicals.

and our boss said, that if somehow you came intacted with e.coli. bacteria you will most likely die.
so, with that said, i think it is amazing that the hospital saved his daughter... and that was a very generous thing he did! :)

It must have been truly terrifying and thank God she was okay. Good for Depp for showing them his thanks like that. He's a good man.

I cannot agree more. No cure for E.coli still.
