"Two households, both alike in dignity/In fair Verona (where we lay our scene/From ancient grudge break new mutiny,/Where civil blood makes civil hands unclean/From forth the fatal loins of these two foes/A pair of star-crossed lovers take their lives." These famous lines and the vivid language of Shakespeare's beloved play drive director Baz Luhrmann's cinematic interpretation. Welcome to Verona Beach, a sexy, violent other-world, neither future nor past, ruled by two rival families, the Montagues and the Capulets. Wealthy, selfish, ruthless and powerful, the parents share an enmity that has become the birthright of their offspring."

Juliet: Do not swear at all. Or, if thou wilt, swear by the gracious self which is the god of my idolatry, and I'll believe thee.

For us much older folks...I saw Romeo and Juliet with Leonard Whiting and Olivia Hussey way back in middle school. It was pretty risque for the 60's. (Romeo was soo good looking).

I did see the newer Romeo and Juliet on DVD. It's been a long time ago, but I really enjoyed it too.

I didn't care for R+J. The Franco Zeffirelli version is very good, and I also have the RSC version, which is my favorite that I've seen. Shakespeare doesn't work without strong actors who understand what they're saying.

OMG! They are strong actors. Wow.. that's all I will say LOL... but anyway, I loved this version!

Krysie, maybe we like it b/c of the 'modern' twist it has... But I do have to total agree w/ you. Both Claire Danes and Leo did an excellent job in it; besides, Leo as Romeo, who could ask for more. :naughty:

I also loved the music from the movie... Very well done, I still like to listen to the music from the R&J soundtrack.
