Biography

BENJAMIN McKENZIE (Ryan Atwood on THE O.C.)

Hard to believe this is Benjamin McKenzie's first starring role!

As Ryan Atwood, the neglected, filled with angst kid from Chino escaping a violent stepfather and a drunken mother, he is adopted by the Cohen's and moves into an affluent neighborhood in the O.C. Instantly befriended by Seth Cohen, his adopted brother, he suffers through adjusting to this new “rich” life and dealing with the “rich kids”. An on-again off-again relationship with Marissa brings out his tendency to settle any problems with his fists.

Ben on the other hand was born and raised in Texas, attended Austin High and graduated from the University of Virginia (like his father and grandfather before him) where he majored in Foreign Affairs and Economics. The oldest of three sons to poet-writer, Frances and attorney Pete Schenkkan, Ben moved to New York City after graduation and three weeks before 9/11 to pursue his passion for acting. He appeared off-Broadway in "Life is a Dream" at the Soho Rep. He also appeared in numerous productions at the Williamstown Theatre Festival, including "Street Scene" and "The Blue Bird," and at the University of Virginia, in "Measure for Measure" and "Zoo Story".
He eventually moved to L.A. where he bunked down on a friend's sofa and got a couple of bit parts in JAG and The District before landing the role of Ryan Atwood in the O.C. almost exactly one year after moving to L.A.

-He changed his name for screen-credit purposes because there's an actor named Ben Schenkman registered with the Screen Actors Guild.
-Son of Austin attorney Pete Schenkkan and poet-writer Frances Schenkkan
-Moved to New York City three weeks before 9/11
-While in New York he waited tables to help support himself and shared a bunk bed in a cramped apartment in the city.
-Mother: Frances Schenkkan will begin the master's program in creative writing at the University of Texas in the fall. She's been a newspaper reporter and editor, and in the 1980s she served on the Austin Planning Commission and the board of the Austin Child Guidance Center. She is a recipient of the Adele Steiner Burleson prize in poetry at the university. She and husband Pieter have three sons, Ben, Nate, and Zack.

It is a huge difference, especially as it's only about 3 or 4 years between the pics. I don't think any of the rest of the cast have changed so much in so little time.

Ben really seems to have matured so much, both physically and in how he presents himself to the camera at public engagements. It's amazing what a good haircut and a bit of confidence can do!

I've only seen the clips of Ben's part, but I'll probably buy it when it comes out on DVD here. I think there are supposed to be extras on the DVD with a Ben interview.

Also, I saw a short (positive!) review from a poster at Ben's IMDB board of the JGHG screening, so it did actually happen. But there wasn't any mention of Ben being there.

I'm quite surprised there hasn't been anything *official* said about it.

Yeah, I'm going to be really interested to see what the regular film critics say about the film and Ben's performance, because those are the ones that are going to have the most impact. I think this screening was held for some kind of peace organisation, so the positive comments on the content of the film are kind of what you'd expect them to be, even though they are good news for Ben.

He is so private and I think he just likes to keep it that way and lead as much of a normal life as he can. He wasn't one of those kids who had always wanted to act from an early age, so I guess his perspective is a little different to that of a lot of Hollywood types. Plus, he's intelligent and well-educated, so he knows he has the capability of changing his career at any time. I do think it's funny how his mum is still bugging him to go to law school :)

Yeah, he's often talked about how careful he is with money and how he leads a quiet life, and I am sure he probably invested his OC salary wisely so he's not desperate for cash. Which gives him a lot more freedom to choose his projects. or probably not work at all if that's what he wants.

Still, if JGHG is coming out in September, he's going to have to start doing press for that quite soon, so at least we'll get something. Once Johnny's over though, it's going to be a really long wait for new Ben stuff.

My boyfriend is a massive Pacino fan. Last summer we went on holiday to Sicily and visited some of "The Godfather" filming locations. We went to a bar which was in the first film and they had loads of pics on the wall of the cast. Pacino looked so young. I think he was only a couple of years older than Ben is now when he made it. I wish Ben could get a role in an epic film like The Godfather. I hope he gets a chance at a major studio film soon.

I wish he could get cast in something big, but I guess that in that whole late 20s/early 30s age group there's a lot of competition from some very good, experienced actors who probably get to see and snap up the best scripts way before Ben. It must be hard to probably compete for roles against people like Jake Gyllenhaal, Casey Affleck, Ryan Phillippe and Christian Bale. Even though Ben is every bit as talented, a lot of producers just want the bigger name.

There was a Ben sighting from 11th July at a nightclub opening in LA. I'm glad he's still alive and out and about, but I'd rather hear something positive about his work right now.

It's a big family and they all look like they are very close. Ben looks very smart and mature. I love the pics of him making his speech and where they are all gathered around the cake with Ben laughing and clearly sharing some banter with his grandfather.
