Biography

BENJAMIN McKENZIE (Ryan Atwood on THE O.C.)

Hard to believe this is Benjamin McKenzie's first starring role!

As Ryan Atwood, the neglected, filled with angst kid from Chino escaping a violent stepfather and a drunken mother, he is adopted by the Cohen's and moves into an affluent neighborhood in the O.C. Instantly befriended by Seth Cohen, his adopted brother, he suffers through adjusting to this new “rich” life and dealing with the “rich kids”. An on-again off-again relationship with Marissa brings out his tendency to settle any problems with his fists.

Ben on the other hand was born and raised in Texas, attended Austin High and graduated from the University of Virginia (like his father and grandfather before him) where he majored in Foreign Affairs and Economics. The oldest of three sons to poet-writer, Frances and attorney Pete Schenkkan, Ben moved to New York City after graduation and three weeks before 9/11 to pursue his passion for acting. He appeared off-Broadway in "Life is a Dream" at the Soho Rep. He also appeared in numerous productions at the Williamstown Theatre Festival, including "Street Scene" and "The Blue Bird," and at the University of Virginia, in "Measure for Measure" and "Zoo Story".
He eventually moved to L.A. where he bunked down on a friend's sofa and got a couple of bit parts in JAG and The District before landing the role of Ryan Atwood in the O.C. almost exactly one year after moving to L.A.

-He changed his name for screen-credit purposes because there's an actor named Ben Schenkman registered with the Screen Actors Guild.
-Son of Austin attorney Pete Schenkkan and poet-writer Frances Schenkkan
-Moved to New York City three weeks before 9/11
-While in New York he waited tables to help support himself and shared a bunk bed in a cramped apartment in the city.
-Mother: Frances Schenkkan will begin the master's program in creative writing at the University of Texas in the fall. She's been a newspaper reporter and editor, and in the 1980s she served on the Austin Planning Commission and the board of the Austin Child Guidance Center. She is a recipient of the Adele Steiner Burleson prize in poetry at the university. She and husband Pieter have three sons, Ben, Nate, and Zack.

It is very odd about JGHG. When they had the preview in July and there was no publicity on it and no mention of Ben even being there. It surprises me for him not to be there. There is just very little talk about that film though. I was hoping we would have gotten a lot of positive reviews and pics of Ben and interviews etc...

It's strange there's so little information when it's only a month until the supposed release date. It is unusual, but I think it might be a difficult film to promote to a wide audience, especially as it's shorter than most films, is quite difficult and intense in content, and only has one character, played by an actor who isn't that well-known these days. I'm guessing that if you're running a cinema and you have the choice to show JGHG or something more mainstream, you'll probably go with the latter as it'll make you more money.

I don't think Ben and Adam would compete for parts as they are different types, but I can see Ben and Cam Gigandet sometimes being considered for the same roles. I was just looking on IMDB and Cam has either completed or signed on for 9 films since The OC. Not all of them seem like Ben's sort of thing, but a couple of them look like interesting roles with a quality cast that I could imagine Ben doing. I like Cam and don't begrudge him his success at all, but if he can go out there after getting his big break on The OC and get plenty of varied film work without being typecast, what on earth is stopping Ben??

Funny you mention Cam. I just saw clips of his movie, Never Back Down. It is about an underground fight club. I was watching the clips and thought Ben would have been perfect to play in that with Cam. I mean seriously, whomever cast Cam had to see him on The OC. Did they miss Ben cage fighting??? The two of them fighting again without their shirts. How hot would that have been! That would have been a great movie. I do want to see it now after watching the clips.

He does seem to be in hiding. I wish we had more news about Johnny. And I think Stanford starts filming in January, but we haven't had any official confirmation that he's still in it. I expect the cast will probably change a bit as a lot of the actors who were originally listed for it on IMDB have other projects which may conflict with the filming schedule. But seeing as Ben's career is so quiet right now he will hopefully still be signed up for it.

We were. This is such good news and I am optimistic that it'll happen, seeing as Ben's the only other name mentioned apart from those who've already been cast, and the media source is reliable. The producers must want him and he must be interested, otherwise why mention him? I hope it's a great part.

I think it will be a really good move for him if it gets confirmed. I suspect he's had a bit of a hard time shaking off his "teen" image and his agency think this is the best way to go. I really need to watch the first three episodes of S4 properly again, for Ben/Ryan. He did an amazing job with the drama, and then an equally amazing job with the lighter, romantic stuff.

I really hope we get firm LAPD news ASAP. The show's creator has got an awesome reputation, so I am sure the script will be brilliant. I hope Ben's agents really push him to take this opportunity as it's got to be better than just concentrating on indie films which get limited releases.

I don't think anyone's confirmed when it'll be on yet - whether it'll be a midseason or a 2009 show. I'm sure I heard that this coming season will be ER's final one, so my guess is that this will be the replacement for it. Did you see on Ben Support that someone posted a link to a casting site which says they start filming the pilot on September 15th? I so hope we get pics from that. I can't wait to see Ben out on location dressed as a cop. It'll be awesome.

I'm sure they'll keep his hair short and neat, especially if he's a uniformed cop which it sounds like he will be at the start. Here's hoping that this means he'll definitely wear a wig for Stanford rather than have to grow his hair :)

The more I think about this, the more excited I am getting. It's on a network which knows how to promote its big shows, and it just seems like the ideal project both for Ben and for us fans who have stuck with him. I think he'll have a lot more freedom than he had on The OC, both in terms of spare time and character development. With The OC being an ongoing story, he had to appear in every episode, so he didn't get much downtime. But with most police/legal-type shows, each episode tends to be a stand-alone story, so there will be quite a few where he'll probably only appear briefly and others where his is the prominent storyline. It might help him to plan other projects more easily if he has a few weeks at a time when he doesn't have much filming for the show to do.

And this type of show which is based on action drama rather than couple-y stuff probably isn't going to try too hard to get its actors into the tabloids for promotion. So I'm sure that type of approach would also appeal to Ben.

Thanks for the YouTube link Kris. I actually managed to get the trailer to work on the site. It's pretty intense and I agree about Ben's voice. He sounds really different. My cat is not a fan though. I've played the trailer 3 times and each time he's jumped up on my lap and hissed at the computer screen. My cat never usually hisses at anything, but obviously Ben doesn't meet with his approval for some reason :)

Mmhmm, I like the fact Ben chooses very diverse roles. He's so talented it's hard for actors to be differentiated between their characters, but his roles are so mixed, he is known for them individually as well as together. I love the toles he chooses as well :D

He looks very relaxed and content, and it seems like his romantic life might be going well too. I think this is the first time in ages that he's actually made a red-carpet appearance with a date. They make a cute couple.

Randomly, the Escape was on yesterday (loved it) and I was watching Ben's performance at the end scene, when he finds Marissa in the alley, and I was thinking to myself how amazing his voice was. He really conveyed the fear really well, I've always known he was an amazingly talented actor and I had never really noticed before but it was such a great scene from Ben. He really did bring Ryan Atwood to life in my opinion, he made it his own character, which I loved. I admit I inda forget it's not reality when Ben's on because I feel myself get sucked in. I feel as sad now :lol: But yeah
