I'm not really a Trek fan but this almost sounds kinda cool as it is.

Yeah, I'm not a trekkie or anything but it appealed to me as a newb to the franchise.

Spock looks like the break-out character. Much different than Leonard Nimoy's stiff characterization.

I think the point of this is to get newer younger audiences into the ST franchise. So they made it all young and sexy.
I dont buy for a second that such a handsome young Kirk could pilot an intergalactic space (w)essel such as that.

I am a fan of the newer series (New Generation, DS9) so I guess I will give this a go. I agree with jospehbarnes that Kirk is way young, but so is Barrack Obama, so I guess it works.

The link on the OP now goes to an advertising feature about the new special effects on the Original Series DVDs.
I have seen the trailer for the new Trek film, and I'm on the fence. I don't like that they've made Kirk into a rebellious punk. Breaking the law is not a positive thing. Other than aspect of his character, the film looks interesting. Everyone looks like the characters, and the acting seems all right, as much as you can tell from a trailer.
It's disappointing that J.J. Abrams went all over the place claiming to be this huge Star Trek fan, then later supposedly, he said he really didn't like Star Trek, he was more into Star Wars and he wanted to make Trek more like Star Wars. Maybe he was misquoted. Maybe the PR people at the studio made something up (when Next Gen first came out, the press releases said Patrick Stewart didn't really know that much about Star Trek and wasn't into the show, then they re-issued the press releases claiming that he was a huge fan for a long time).
It's also disappointing as each new person who gets their hands on the "franchise" (I hate that word, because it represents that it's a business and not something creative or artistic) wants to "re-invent" the Trek history. They broke all kinds of continuity for the series Enterprise (of course, they explained that by making the entire series a simulation and not real).
As a writer and a movie/TV fan, I think you ought to have a respect and appreciation for the original material and build on it instead of ignoring the past.
I haven't decided if I'll see the movie in theatres or wait for a less expensive option.
