On May 17th, at the Fall Upfront Presentation for The CW's 2007 television season, network head Dawn Ostroff announced to the world that "Veronica Mars", our beloved teen-spy drama, will not be returning to the network next year. Leading up to this announcement were a string of bad scheduling, even worse promotional ideas, unfortunate ratings, a possible series restart, and a whole lot of dedicated fans.
Let's start with the bad; The CW began their first year as a new network with "Veronica Mars" on Tuesdays paired with another female-led veteran series, "Gilmore Girls". Together, these shows created what was known as "Aerie Tuesdays". Many fans believe that this promotional gimmick was what stunted "Mars"'s growth the beginning of the season. We really do not want to point too many fingers because it really could have been a number of reasons why ratings did not pickup for the show, although I believe that this article articulates a lot of our thoughts. Now the good, well, depending on who you ask. Around the time when the network was putting together their new fall lineups of 2007, there were many rumblings that "Veronica Mars" was not going to make the jump. Series creator, Rob Thomas, obviously had his ear to the office door because he began putting together a proposal for the CW suits to revamp the show in order to build the network's confident and hopefully build a larger audience next season. What initially presented was a complete overhaul of the show that had it returning 5 years later as Veronica completed her FBI training and was a full-fledged working agent. Little is still know about said presentation, except for the few casting details we were given; Kristen Bell would obviously stay put as Ms. Mars, Enrico Colantoni would stay as her father, and Jason Dohring was thought to be included somewhere in there as well. Many fans were skeptical, but most would accept this new incarnation. It was widely reported that Dawn Ostroff and other CW heads loved Rob Thomas' "flash-forward" presentation and things were looking up for the cult television hit. This brings us to today. The show was not picked up, and this year's finale did not end the show as showrunner Rob Thomas, and the show's fans, wanted it to. Little reason was given to why it was canceled without a proper goodbye, and fans have been left scratching their heads. It seems this mystery is dying to be solved. As a sign of support for our very favorite television show, we fans of the show are banning together in hopes of reviving the show and letting the honchos over at The CW Network that "Veronica Mars" has loyal viewers, they do support the advertisers that pay for our program, and we won't stand for just a "season finale". What we are demanding from The CW is that we get another season of "Veronica Mars" to prove that the show has wings with the help of the proposed overhaul, and that the fans will support the network if it supports the show that we have invested so much time, love, and most importantly, MONEY into. If not a full season next year, maybe a slew of episodes to finish off the story, or two-hour television event to tie up loose ends and possibly restart the franchise. How will we do this? By sending "Mars" chocolate bar wrappers into The CW Network's main headquarters as a sign that we "Veronica Mars" fans support the show through thick and thin and will do anything! We have until June 15th to make our voices heard! That is when the cast are let go of their contracts. Here's what every "Veronica Mars" fan has to do: Click here to obtain a PDF Mars bar wrapper to send to Dawn Ostroff 1) Buy a Mars bar (or ruffle through your old trash!) 2) Eat the Mars bar, save the wrapper (we checked... we can't send in the actual bar) 3a) Send your wrapper(s) to The CW Network and flood their mail room! 3b) If you don't have the time or money for a bar, email or mail them the printout linked above. 3c) Do both.
