I think that it's important for these young celebs to announce their intentions to remain virgins, because it's setting a good example for their teen followers. There's plenty of real celebs and fictional characters that are seen to be sleeping around, so there's nothing wrong with someone saying they plan to remain pure.

I agree Pryia, I also think people put more emphasis in role models than the reality of them in real life, im not sure how likely it is for a young teen to want to sleep around just because their idol does, if im wrong and they do, then i dread to think what all the Miley Cyrus fans are doing out there, I wouldn't want my daughter looking up to her

That's my point My girls want to dress like them and imitate their dance moves. They want to be like these teen/tween stars they see. Yes I still have a thumb on my girls. But that is because I try to monitor things. Sassy has a friend that she went to school with that her parents let her do more or less what she chooses. And they are very influenced by these stars.

I agree with Pryia and Chris. I mean, I'm 17 years old and I see my favorite celebrities in relationships and doing the occasional stupid stuff and some of them play characters on TV shows or in movies that sleep around or do drugs or binge drink (uh..."Gossip Girl," anyone?) but I have never once felt compelled to act like them.
I think that, as long as the parents enforce rights and wrongs from a young age and throughout their kids' lives, then a young boy or girl won't necessarily run off and have sex freely and carelessly or drink or smoke. Yes, there are incidents where that does happen but I have very rarely seen anyone my age - when I was younger and even now - acting out because they want to be just like a celebrity or a fictional character.

Essy if you don't mind me asking, how old are your girls? I do think that a majority of the preteens and early teens do look up to these stars (which is a media effect I think) but I think there's a limit. The issues like sex etc aren't like those of dressing like a star and immitating dance moves. These are values and norms than we've been taught already (I'm assuming as i did sex ed when i was 10/11 I think) so it should have already been established. If this is the case then why is there any need to keep the issue in the media (whether positive or negative).
I just don't think this is a good thing for her to present it to everyone on her sexual stance, first of all, is it of relevance? How many of her fans were gonna follow her that much that they were gonna have sex just because she did? If they do, it's because they were already thinking of sex anyways so it hadn't really effected anything as such. Besides isn't it much better to start showing the implications of sex rather than forbidding it altogether? I'm not saying that they should present it as a typical drama showing how you automatically get pregnant and get STD's when you have sex, but that there's a risk and that there are precautions that should be followed, etc? It may just be me though and i can understand where people are coming from, like i said, I can only speak for the people i know

I think you phrased that perfectly. There is a lot of pressure, I'd imagine. I mean, there is already a lot of pressure when you're a teen, but being in the public eye makes it even more intense.

LittleDiva is 10 Sassygirl1 is 12 Yes as a parent we teach them and hope they will listen. But I was young once my self and yes when I was young there wasn't a big Teenie bopper music etc thing as now.But when you have these young actress/actors musicians etc out their flaunting their affairs/ etc young kids see it and think it is ok.. granted I look at it from a mothers point of view ( and at a different perspective given my age ) I know things are not like they were when I was in my late teens and early 20's) As for sexed when I was in school we didn't get that till like 8th grade.. not in 5 /6 like now..... Sorry If I sound like I am nagging. |

I understand completely where you're coming from and no you don't sound like you're nagging
I get what you mean. I think it may because because I'm from a different generation, i see things differently because things aren't as tabboo for me. I don't care about alot of things happening in the media, even when I was a kid, i had my obssession with Britney (typical I know) and I found out she had sex, that didn't make me wanna go out and have sex, because at the time I wasn't thinking about it at all and i had done sex education. As for young people flaunting thei sex lives in the media, that was my point, this is essentually the same thing, it's just a difference of them flaunting their lack of it. It's still gonna bring the issue up which was one of my points. I don't understand why you'd make this stuff public though. To me, I find it demorallising, it is blatently a publicity stunt, for good or bad, it is clearly so the public will know, otherwise why would she have said it? Secondly this is a belief not to have sex before marriage, your own personal belief. If I can totally accept that people want to wait til they marry to have sex with the one they truly love, then why can't people accept that there are people who have sex before marriage and are respinsible and don't sleep around. i have to admit, I'm anti Jordon because a comment she made the the VMA's has stuck with me and although it hasn't offended me because I couldn't care less about what someone I don't know says about me, I found it incredibally rude to brand everyone who wasn't a virgin a slut, which I felt is way worse than not believing in a purity ring. It's rude for many reasons, she has assumed all people who aren't virgins practically sleep around. She has no regard to anything she has said being bad because it paints sex in a bad light and for a teen idol that's probably a good thing, but this is probably why I find this worse than others may find it. I find it a slap in the face she's publically aired her yet to be dirty laundry and is praised when she can make such remarks that are worse in my opinion. I bet my rant sounded more nagging now

nope Priya ... I agree that branding someone a slut if they have had sex is totally wrong!! And as the saying goes let he/she with out sin cast the first stone. I for one and not.. sometimes it's more or less do as I say not as I do, with so many of the celebs. That they sometimes forget where they came from..

Yeah it really irritated me, I just don't understand how no one had made an issue of that comment yet it's made global on Miley, Jonas Brothers and Jordin's no sex. It's manipulating in a way, they're giving you a picture of what they want you to see, the pure, good hearted singers. They put them so high on a pedistal and then watch as they come crumbling down (as they did with Britney)
I'm not a fan of how the media concerning celebs work, they are quite coniving and cruel, it's astoishing how they can get away with exploiting such things. I mean all you have to do is take a look at Michael Jackson (seeing as he is the most recent) and how the media constantly belittled him and ridiculed him, then he dies and they praise him with such obvious hypocrisy it's unreal. The worst is they've lost all sorts of boundaries now, I saw OK Magazine have a picture of a dead Michael on the cover, made me feel sick. I know I went off on a completely different subject, it seemed to fit when I was writing it
