ITC Bans New Cellphones With Qualcomm Chips From Being Imported To USA

ITC Bans New Imported Phones

Though most of you don't care or have no clue what this is about. I'll give it to you simply. The U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) banned the import of ALL new cellphones to the USA that use Qualcomm branded processors. The problem is most of the phones in America use these chips. So as of June 7th (today) all new phones will be banned from being imported INTO America. All phones as we know are made in some Asian country, and thus they need to be imported from their to us here in the States. However, any new phone that is imported and has a Qualcomm processor will not be allowed into the country.

Again many of you may not see how this is important, but this can dramatically affect the entire US Economy by tenfold. Sprint, Verizon, AT&T, AllTel and basically all other cellphone companies can now only have phones that were released prior to today or use processors not made by Qualcomm. Again the problem lies in that the majority of our CURRENT and future phones are all Qualcomm based.

If this ban is not lifted, there will be a huge negative impact on our economy. I know many do not like cellphones or users of cellphones, but they do account for a big chunk of the American economy. Some of the largest cellphone manufacturers including Samsung (which I know many of you own their phones) are considering leaving the US Market altogether. NOT a good sign.

The impact of this ruling cannot even be stated enough in my post. It will have a dramatic impact in all of our lives if it is not lifted. (Yes I am a techie afterall, but even beyond that, this will be a huge issue for the days to come.)

What is so wrong with these chips Jon?

That is a bummer on the economy. IT would certainly take a hit.

It will take a huge hit. The economy is driven by consumerism, and if we can't buy new phones, there will be no companies left to make phones...and so on and on. It will get nasty very quickly.

Anyways as to what is wrong with the chips. "Apparently" and I will say that on the fact that I do not know all the facts. Unless someone is related to the companies involved, we may never know all the facts in question.

But anyways a company called Broadcomm patented a couple of technologies. I don't even know if they invented them or just patented them. Anyways, the Qualcomm chips apparently infringe on these said technologies. From what I gather, it's not even something huge like actually controlling the phone during use, its patents relating to the powering of the phone and power management.

Anyays, Qualcomm basically invented and own the patents to most of the newest technology that we use in our cellphones today, without them, we have no cellphones (obviously I am overstating that, there will be some that do not use Qualcomm but again the majority do use Qualcomm technology.) No matter if it's an America phone or an Asian phone or any other country, Qualcomm invented most of the biggest and most important technologies to date relating to most cellphones around the world.

But they didn't invented these technologies that are currently under fire.
