Taking The Happy Out Of A Happy Meal

Crazy, but it could happen.

San Francisco city officials are readying to ban most of McDonald's Happy Meals in current form because they offer toys to entice kids to buy meals not meeting nutritional criteria. If this is approved, it could force the entire franchise to put a stop to happy meals for the time being.

Under a proposal given preliminary approval this week, McDonald's and other restaurants would have until December 2011 to improve their meals' nutrition with fruits and vegetables -- if the chains want to keep offering Captain America figurines or toys tied with latest films.

The proposed ordinance is part of a "food justice movement" and is designed to address how restaurants giveaway toys to sell fast food whose nutritional content is being challenged.

McDonald's, Burger King and Subway have also been mentioned as second, third, and fourth to be handled. "It's not what our customers want, nor is it something they asked for. Public opinion continues to be overwhelmingly against this misguided legislation," McDonald's spokesperson said in a statement. "Parents tell us it's their right and responsibility -- not the government's - to make their own decisions and to choose what's right for their children."

Basically, it would mean taking the Happy out of Happy Meal.

No toys. Is this a good decision? Clearly the first to initiate the ban [McDonalds] will lose customers. I myself buy my kids Happy Meals all the time, and while their choice is chicken nuggets, fries and a drink, at least they finish the whole meal. It's hard to get a 2, 4, or 6 year old to finish a meal, so that in itself is a good thing. And I love the toys; I always collect the whole group and save them in the plastic for when the kids are older - I say bad idea! What do you say?

The whole reason of having a Happy Meal is the toy, it makes you happy you ate the food! PLUS you can have fruit and veg pack with your meal so it's up to parents if they don't want to give the child the fruit and veg. Honestly, people act like everyone eats MCDonalds everyday when it's usually a treat, why ruin things that have no business to you?

Craziest thing ever! Just let the parents feed their kids. Everything is becoming such a dictatorship. What happen to freedom. By golly let people eat what they want and have a little surprise in the box. Gee wiz!

Yet another case of parents trying to legislate their jobs away. It's your kid, make the decision on nutrition for them so they learn to be a responsible adult. Don't blame the Captain America toy for your inadequacies.

Who cares if a parent feeds their kid a happy meal once a week! Why punish everyone for the few parents bad choices. Lets go after the corn people. Stop putting high fructose corn syrup in everything.

I hate those happy meals. I always have to buy them for the stupid toy the kids don't play with. I'd rather just buy two burgers and share my fries which I never finish.

Including in cars! There are much more efficient ways to get your car through the drive through. *shameless tie in*

Has anyone seen the video of the aged McDonalds food going around? Pretty disturbing, with or without the toy prizes.

No and I don't think I want to. Ignorance is bliss.

Leave me to my McRib.

Sylvo, I tried looking up what you are referring to on YouTube but there are millions of McDonalds videos. Which commercial or ad in particular are you referring to? And has it been going around for a while or just recently? I'm interested in what you are talking about.

I agree with you guys. Part of the fun of McDonalds is the fact that they out-do all the other franchise's in having the latest, hottest toys. There's been many of them that I buy, keep in the plastic, and collect. I don't understand why critics have to pick apart everything about something that makes kids happy. Seriously, for the parents out there feeding kids Happy Meals 4-7 days a week, it's wrong. But for us normal parents who maybe buy Happy Meals 1-2 times a week [normally on a Friday or Saturday night] - come on, you're taking away our easy-out on weekend dinners! If the toy was taken away, I personally would still buy my kids chicken nuggets and fries [with the sometime optional apple slices]. They eat healthy the rest of the week with home-made meals!

Parents are responsible for making sure their kids eat healthy. An occasional happy meal should not be a problem. If parents are buying happy meals often, then it is a parenting issue...not a McDonalds issue.
