I can't wait either because I'm a huge Stargate fan. I started watching from the very beginning, when the original movie came out. Then I continued with SG-1, Atlantis and the 2 direct-to-DVD movies

^ Nope, you're good to go
Stargate Universe is quite different from SG-1 and Atlantis and it has it's own story. The only things it has in common with the first 2 Stargate shows are the stargates (as in the devices) and some characters that are appearing on the show now and then, like Gen. O'Neill

So far so good with SGU. It is a bit grittier than the prior Stargate shows, which is good. Not just more of the same. Time will tell if it can hold interest, and there is so many good shows on Friday night, it has tough competitors. Thank goodness for taping and internet episodes. No reason we can watch them all.
