Hopefully! But lets not forget the episodes and the series are longer than what they were when Baker was the doctor (I think) I just think tennant is perfect for the role

Looking back at some of the 1970s seasons, they were typically made up of six stories, broken up into 4 or 6 episodes. That's 26 episodes at least half an hour long, so that's more airtime than thirteen 45-minute episodes. That's about three hours more story than we are getting right now.

I think the new series goes on location more, so perhaps that's why it's a more demanding schedule.

oh my bad I've never really seen many of the old Dr Who episodes.

I think UK television in general these days only make a few episodes a year now, and it still takes 10 months to film, maybe they should take a leaf out of America's book who manage 22 episodes a year

US television has changed a lot since I was in school. We used to have at least 26 episodes in a season, too. New shows started in the fall, and you had repeats in the springs. Then they started doing mid-season replacements, summer series that would sometimes continue if they were popular enough, they don't give a new show a solid chance sometimes and cancel after just a few weeks, they'll run two episodes back to back then nothing the next week. It's just weird. I can't stand reality television, either.

See here, they will show the whole season before deciding wether to cancel it or not, US television seem so much more cut-throat

Yeah half the shows that start in fall are cut after a few episodes and the big giants like American Idol take over, it's all very fast paced. Quite annoying really as there's been many shows I've enjoyed that have gotten cut.

I have to admit, if it wasn't for my husband being really into DW, I don't know if I would have rushed to watch the new series. I do like science fiction, so I might've checked it out. It is easier to get into than the original series, I think, because the stories are so self-contained, not continued over several episodes.

Back to the topic, here's a great article about the future of Doctor Who:

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/arts/main.../bvtvwho11.xml

Highlights include:
  • Confirmation of "The Return of the Cybermen" as the title of the Christmas special (photos have been published, so it's not really a surprise).
  • A list of some actors that are getting top odds to replace Tennant when he leaves. My fave on the list is Stephen Fry -- he's wonderful!
  • Confirmation of the dates for three of the upcoming specials.

I'm not that familiar with Stephen Fry I've seen him in a few things but not enough to really get a sense. It does seem he would bring a different side to the character and that would be really interesting.

Ooo Cybermen, yay! Question, what do you guys make of the recurring villians? Like the Darleks who keep coming back no matter what. . Just wondering people's thoughts, I find it a bit far fetched though I've grown to like these villians as characters as well.

Some of my favorite work of Stephen Fry:
  • Blackadder - he was a regular in series two and four and did a guest appearance in series 3
  • Jeeves & Wooster - he played the valet to Hugh Laurie's foppish gentleman
  • Peter's Friends - great comedy film in the vein of "The Big Chill"

He's also a writer, but I haven't read any of his books. I've heard they're very good, though. I think as a writer, he could bring some good input to the series.

Honestly, I think he's a long shot, though, as he's over 50 years old. The earlier Doctors were older, but nowadays, I think they're going to keep going for younger actors. Perhaps an older Doctor would be acceptable if they had a couple of younger companions...

What do you all think?

I'm 42, and I wouldn't mind seeing a mature Doctor again, especially one of Fry's caliber.

I'd also like to see Fry's friend Kenneth Branagh play the Master.

i thinl because they are trying to please alot of children, a younger doctor is probably more likely,

I LOVE the Daleks!!! Cyberman are great but are not as cool I get your point, its not entirely believeable that the Dr seems to defeat them and they come back time and time again

Well, it is a time travel show, plus they do all the dimensional cross-over stuff, so it's not surprising that he'd keep running into the same bad guys. The Doctor, I think it was Tom Baker's era, once had a chance to destroy all the Daleks but he didn't, because it would be genocide. I would like to know more about the Time War, but I wonder if that will always stay shrouded in mystery.

The Cybermen in the newer episodes, by the way, have a completely different origin than the Cybermen in the 60s/70s/80s episodes.

What do you think of the suggestion that John Simm play the Doctor? I think it would be very weird to take the same actor who played the Master and have him play the Doctor. Although, it could be interesting if he "chose" the face. The only time they really did that was with Romana -- she was a Time Lord who traveled with the Doctor for a while, and when she regenerated, she tried on a few faces and then picked the face of a girl they'd encountered who died.

Yeah his whole past is kind of shrouded in mystery, I love getting facts about it.

And I think it would be really cool if he chose The Master's face. I mean if they just tried to put him in the role sans explanation it would be weird but with an explanation it could be really sweet.

I don't think I've seen John Simm in anything else. Have any of you? What do you think of him as an actor?

On a different topic, DH says he heard some speculation that Tennant might be up for the role of the Riddler in one of the next Batman movies. I suppose job offers like that (and I don't know how serious the speculation was, though DH and I agree he'd be very good in the role) could affect his choice to stay with DW or to move on.
