David Tennant - Voted Best Doctor Ever in 2006

I'm terrifically excited by news of Tennant's Hamlet being recorded for posterity. I can't wait to buy the DVD.

DAVID TENNANT REPRISES HIS ROLE AS HAMLET FOR ROYAL SHAKESPEARE COMPANY PRODUCTION
TO AIR ON GREAT PERFORMANCES ON PBS

Pasadena, CA (August 2, 2009) – Shakespeare’s immortal “To Be, Or Not To Be” takes on a whole new meaning (and medium) as classical stage and screen actor David Tennant reprises the role of Hamlet for an upcoming television adaptation of the Royal Shakespeare Company’s (RSC) 2008 stage production of the classic. The production will be presented by GREAT PERFORMANCES on a to-be-determined air date in 2010 on PBS.

“Whether playing Hamlet on GREAT PERFORMANCES or hosting MASTERPIECE CONTEMPORARY for PBS, David Tennant brings exceptional talent to any stage or screen,” said John F. Wilson, PBS Chief TV Programming Executive. “Consistently named as one of the most influential people in show business by the British media, we’re looking forward to an American audience getting to know him better for his breadth of roles.”

Best known for his performance in the title role of the popular British TV series Doctor Who since 2005, Tennant is making his debut in October as the host of MASTERPIECE CONTEMPORARY on PBS. His many other credits include his recent portrayal of Barty Crouch Junior in the big-screen blockbuster Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Tennant has also received numerous awards from the theatre community for his lead roles in several Shakespearean productions and other classic plays.

Acclaimed by The Guardian as “the best Hamlet in years,” Tennant’s performance was praised by the UK paper as the work of “a superb actor … supported by one of the best RSC ensembles in living memory.” Veteran stage and screen actor Patrick Stewart returns to the cast as Claudius in the screen version, which is directed by Gregory Doran, who also returns to reprise his stage direction of the production (in 2001, Doran directed the dynamic television adaptation of the RSC’s Macbeth). Co-produced by Illuminations Television and the RSC for the BBC, in association with Thirteen for WNET.ORG and NHK, the adaptation recreates the tone and atmosphere of the stage production in a film-style interpretation shot in HD on location at St. Joseph’s College in Mill Hill, London. The production is produced for television by John Wyver and Sebastian Grant.

I'm so glad it's going to be on PBS so I can watch it. I love Tennant, though I'm sure I'll love Matt Smith too.

I think I'll like Matt well enough. My husband is a long-time Doctor Who fan, so I had seen some of all the previous Doctors before the new show premiered with Chris Eccleston. Still, David Tennant is easily my favorite actor in the role, and I loved his Hamlet, too, and his Berowne in Love's Labour's Lost.

The RSC are taking pre-orders for the Tennant Hamlet DVD. Alas, I'm sure it's only for the UK region, because it comes with some collectible postcards. I'll have to wait for the US (region 1) release.

Tennant's final words as the Doctor

From comicbookmovie.com:

The next Doctor Who special is titled: "The Waters of Mars," and airs on the UK channel BBC1 this Sunday and it heads towards David Tennant's dramatic as always regeneration into um, what is it now? Oh yeah the 11thDoctor who's going to be played by British actor Matt Smith.

Tennant's actual regeneration to another Time Lord happens in the 2-parter "The End of Time," and it'll be the final time he'll be playing the Dr Who role ever. The 1st part is on December 25th Christmas day, and the 2nd part is reported to be on or around New Year's Day.

Because though Tennant has been filming on the spin-off series, "The Sarah Jane Adventures," his final scenes he filmed as the actual Doctor in reality was them even though they have already been broadcast as he filmed the specials way before the CBBC spin-off show but the shows were shown 1st. So some have seen his last scenes but in order of theDoctor Who episodes we've yet to see the real last final scene if that makes any sense to you lol.

Anyway Davids final words go like this, from David himself:

"The last line I said as the Doctor is half-way through an episode and it's, 'You two, with me, spit spot'.

"They were the last words I uttered in the suit, so I guess it was robbed of any epic quality!" Laughs Tennant.

"That was probably best because it was very emotional saying cheerio and filming the very, very final scene was very sad.

"If the scene had coincided with the actual final day, I'd have been in trouble. I was in a bit of trouble as it was, but I was all right, I kept a mildly stiff upper lip!"

Next up for David Tennant is his US TV debut in a new hour-long comedy pilot as the title character in NBC's "Rex Is Not Your Lawyer."

Thanks to all the guys at The Geek Files for the exclusive info.

Tim found the first episode of "Dreamland" online today. It's an animated series with David Tennant voicing the Doctor and Georgia Moffat ("The Doctor's Daughter") playing an American waitress who becomes the Doctor's companion for the story. The story is set in the 1950s near Roswell, New Mexico. The first episode was about 12 minutes long and it's pretty interesting. The character animation seems very strange, and Tim says it reminds him of watching marionettes.

This is cute, is a BBC One "Christmas Card" of sorts, a downloadable wallpaper featuring the Tenth Doctor using his TARDIS as a different sort of conveyance....

A couple of nights ago, we watched the entire story of "Dreamland" the animated program. It had a pretty good story, but to hubby and I, the animation style was kind of distracting. Very video game, but slower. The whole thing is about 45 minutes long, so perhaps three 12-minute-or-so episodes.

So, I was watching the final episode of "Extras" -- the movie-length Christmas special "Bloody Merry" -- and....

"What?" You ask. "What does this have to do with "Doctor Who."

Yes, well, in the show, Ricky Gervais' character Andy is an actor and he does a silly but popular sitcom and he wants to be regarded as a serious actor. His old agent and his new agent both keep bringing up the opportunity to play an alien on "Doctor Who" and he keeps turning it down.

After a few months of not working (he has quit his sitcom), cut to Andy in a giant slug suit facing off with none other than Tenth Doctor David Tennant and an unknown companion, who defeat the alien by throwing salt on him. It's a very funny bit.

Also, I should mention that in the same episode, Andy is talking to his new agent about how he has the number one catch-phrase in the country and the agent tells him it's not number one any more. It's been beaten out by "Am I bovvered?" I believe that's from Catherine Tate (Donna Noble)'s show.

Is a feature, featuring Tennant, in the works?

The rumors have been around for awhile that the Doctor would make the leap onto the big screen with most-popular-Doctor ever David Tennant playing the role. I'm not sure where IGN got their information, but here's what they posted today, for what it's worth.

from IGN.com:

After the success of the all new "Doctor Who" TV show on BBC1, producers have decided to make a big budget film.

"Doctor Who" has been a big hit in America and producers are hoping to cash in on the interest there with a movie.

However, it is hoped that Billie Piper who played Rose Tyler the Doctor's side kick will be reunited with the Doctor, played by David Tennant in the new film.

A source told the Star: "There's been so much interest in "Doctor Who" since the show was sold to America that a film is the natural progression.

"Top of our list is to get Billie on board, not only was she amazingly popular, it would be really exciting to get her back with the Doc."

But will she be up for it?...

If you haven't seen "Dreamland," the animated story featuring Tennant as the voice of the Doctor, it's coming out on DVD in March. I don't care for the animation style, but the story is good enough.

If you live in the US and you can't wait until May 4 for the DVD release of "Hamlet," do a search on YouTube for Tennant Hamlet. Someone has posted the entire movie in short increments. Hubby turned the sound up on the desktop in the office (I was in the living room) and suddenly I heard the familiar cadences of Shakespeare. We didn't watch much of it. It's very high quality, though. In the opening scenes they kept the same feel of the stage version, but they added in some security camera video which was particularly interesting when the ghost appears, because he doesn't show up on the footage from the security cam.
