Emmys snubs last year's winners
Notably absent? Last year's winners -- "Lost," Felicity Huffman, Patricia Arquette and James Spader. In case you forgot, "Lost" and "Desperate Housewives" towered last year. This year, they were left in the dust of "Grey's Anatomy" and "24." Both were bounced from their series categories (though why "Housewives" was classified as a comedy is anyone's guess); both failed to land many acting nominations. Instead, "24" came on with real strength, nabbing 12 nominations -- more than any other series. It got acting nods for Keifer Sutherland, Jean Smart and Gregory Itzen and is shaping up as the one to beat. Other oddities: "Sopranos" stars (and former winners) James Gandolfini and Edie Falco weren't on the list but "Six Feet Under's" Peter Krause and Frances Conroy were. "CSI" and "Law & Order" were barely mentioned but "Two and a Half Men" and "Boston Legal" got seven nominations. "House" was nominated for Best Drama but its leading man, Hugh Laurie, wasn't. Similarly, "Curb Your Enthusiasm" got nods for Larry David and Cheryl Hines but "My Name is Earl" and "Scrubs" couldn't muster nominations for their leads. Among the surprise inclusions: nominations for Steve Carell ("The Office"), Charlie Sheen and Jon Cryer ("Two and a Half Men"), Denis Leary ("Rescue Me"); Lisa Kudrow ("The Comeback"); Julia Louis-Dreyfus ("The New Adventures of Old Christine"), Stockard Channing ("Out of Practice"), Kyra Sedgwick ("The Closer"), Geena Davis ("Commander in Chief"), Will Arnett ("Arrested Development"), Jaime Pressly ("My Name is Earl") Christopher Meloni ("Law and Order: Special Victims Unit") and Chandra Wilson ("Grey's Anatomy"). Blythe Danner, a winner last year, has a double shot at the prize again this year (for "Huff" and "Will & Grace"). Alfre Woodard is also in that league. She's nominated for "Desperate Housewives" and "The Water is Wide." While many thought departing shows would disappear from the list, "The West Wing" and "Will & Grace" held on strong. "Six Feet Under" did, too, and "Arrested Development" and "Malcolm in the Middle" proved they also could go out with a bang. UPN darling "Veronica Mars" and WB favorite "Everwood" were shut out; "Prison Break" managed one. What to make of this? Shows you may not have noticed bore watching. Something like "Rescue Me" might just become appointment television if it brings home an Emmy in August. ------------------- Source: http://www.siouxcityjournal.com/arti...a4000f7a23.txt
