Canceled shows rarely get reprieve

Everwood, wb, cast Fans of WB's "Everwood" are still wishing that their favorite show would somehow be resuscitated as "7th Heaven" was at the last minute. That seems unlikely.

The difference was that when WB decided to drop that show about a minister and his family, it was because it cost too much, not because of ailing Nielsens. In fact, "7th Heaven" was WB's most-watched show, which is why it got a reprieve.

Faithful followers of "Everwood" even had plans to erect a Ferris wheel outside the office of the new CW network. It would have mimicked a scene in the last episode to put a spin on their campaign to save the series, according to the Fort Worth Star Telegram.

Fans of vanished shows are still writing e-mails and signing petitions to revive their shows.

In the old days of snail mail it was harder to whip up a save-our-show campaign because there was no central meeting place for outraged fans to assemble.

Now the Internet serves as the perfect gathering spot to try to raise a ruckus. There are several sites that allow people to select their killed-off show from a laundry list and sign the online petition.

Some offer people a place to pen their frustration. Petitionspot.com is one. You can Google TV show petitions for others or search by show name.

But there is little reason to believe that network executives ever visit any of these sites. They've made up their minds by the time the ax falls, and there won't be a change of heart for several reasons.

One is that by the time fans learn a show is gone, so are the actors. Their contracts for the series have usually expired, and they're out looking for work. The studios have torn down the sets, and the parade has already passed by.

The other reason canceled shows aren't coming back is that, in most cases, they were dumped because their ratings were awful and falling fast by the time they got whacked.

Networks are afraid a losing show will pull down the one following it, or that it's failing to attract the younger audience the network expected.
