Connor Jessup / Ben Mason

Ben Mason

The spikes on Ben’s back aren’t the only thing different about him since being rescued from the Skitters - Ben’s senses have become sharper since being harnessed, and his strength has greatly increased, all of which has made him an exceptional soldier. Ben’s brothers are still adjusting to the fact that Ben isn’t the bookworm he used to be, but they are happy to have him back.

Ben is by far my favorite character. I think the route they are going for season 2 is the right way to go. Ben is changing and whether he is in control or not is still in doubt. One thing is for sure, he is hiding all the new developments from everyone. He knows they already look at him differently. If they found out half of what is really going on, his life would be in danger.

I think a lot of Ben's anger stems from his fear of potentially losing control. He wants to fight as hard as he can while he's still himself so that he doesn't have to risk losing his identity and possibly turning on his own people.

Connor Jessup has turned out some amazing performances and I couldn't be happier for someone who's a genuinely nice guy in person. His portrayal of Ben has changed and Connor has done an admirable job. We were all squirming here when he had to get in the water because we knew how cold he had to have been. Not many actors would go to such lengths, but Connor did it with class and courage. (I'm still shivering just thinking about it!)

Its interesting, i re-watched a new video that came out recapping the first season with Noah narrating (you can get it on iTunes) and I stand by my theory about Karens speech at the end of season 1. When the aliens mentioned they didn't expect resistance on this level, they were not talking about the 2nd mass or Tom. They were talking about Ben. Rick went to the aliens hook, line and sinker. But Ben has been able to resist them very well. This is something they didn't expect and want to learn more about.

In the first 2 episodes of season 2 we see the aliens took more than Tom on the ship. It tells me they have seen this trait among other kids and they are attempting to learn how they are resisting them. In the end the aliens implanted Tom with a parasite that would give them a birds eye view of the 2nd mass and Bens progress. Before the season is out, the aliens are going to use this against the 2nd mass, leading to Ben and the others being used to destroy the resistance willing or not.

Just a theory.

Oh, wow, I really should have rewatched at least the last episode of the first season because I totally forgot some of these things. That's interesting. Definitely makes me rethink some things!

If you think other kids resisted like Ben, and that's why they took all those other people, then why do you think they only let Tom live. Is Tom the only one who not only resisted but also tried to fight back? It seems like they are really only interested in Ben. They didn't even want Rick back when he wanted to go with them.

Its an interesting point that Tom was allowed to live. I think in some ways they did it to use Tom as a way to get Ben (lure him) to the aliens. If you think about it, Tom being gone for 3 months results in Bens increased hatred towards the aliens but also the distrust among the 2nd mass of Ben and his increased abilities. I dont think we have seen the last of what was done to Tom on that ship. Rick didnt fight he simply gave in and the aliens dont want that. Based on the comic that showed Karen getting harnessed, we know the aliens prefer people who fought back or resisted but they didnt expect the level of resistance they have gotten from Ben. This is why they are taking such a keen interest in him.

Which can also mean that they let Tom live more because of Ben than because he himself fought back. Or possibly both.

Because of all the other people they took, it does seem like there are other resistance groups still fighting, besides the 2nd Mass, but Ben may be the one they are most interested in. Maybe they want to start a new hybrid race on earth? Then they would probably be interested in the people who are more resilient.

I agree, and I think we will find Karen plays an important role in this as Bens transformation continues.

Ben is the most tragic character on this show. He never catches a break! He's so lonely and isolated, now more than ever. Sad.

Ben has become my favorite character this season. Very well-written storyline, and Mr. Jessup's acting are the reasons.
