A Huge Plea from me!!!
Hey guys. For one of my university projects I am studying the effects the Gilmore Girls have on its viewers, and to see whether it's attempts to be ground breaking in stereotypes actually has an effect etc. If you could fill in this following questionnaire I would love you all forever! The information from it would only be used for the purpose of writing my case study, and if you'd prefer to keep your answers secret, feel free to PM me them! I hope this is okay me posting this in here, as I'm really desperate and need some primary research to work from! :S
How old are you? Are you male or female? How many hours of television do you watch per week? On a scale of 1-5 (one being not at all, and 5 being very much) how much does the Gilmore Girls influence you in your identity and life choices? Do you feel that you get most of your moral stories from the television, or other areas of life such as parents, church and school? Do you connect more with male, or female characters? Do you feel that you are faced with weak, stereotypical roles for women in television? Do you feel as though the Gilmore Girls break through this stereotype with modern day women like Lorelai and Rory, or do you feel they stick with the female stereotypes, because of Emily? Out of Rory, Lorelai, and Emily – not taking age into consideration, who do you feel you connect most with and why? Does Rory’s determination in academia spur you on to work harder in school/college? Does your family expect you to grow up to be a certain person? i.e be a wife and have Children? If so, does seeing lives on television outside of what you parents have in mind for you, make you aware that you do have other choices? Do you think it is unrealistic that girls can lead lives like Rory does, but in the real world. I.e well behaved, strives to do well in school etc. Do you think it is unrealistic that women can lead lives like Lorelai does, but in the real world. I.e, successfully raise a child on her own, for the child to turn out as a good citizen, and for her to have a successful career etc.

How old are you? 21
Are you male or female? Female How many hours of television do you watch per week?About 35 hours On a scale of 1-5 (one being not at all, and 5 being very much) how much does the Gilmore Girls influence you in your identity and life choices?2 Do you feel that you get most of your moral stories from the television, or other areas of life such as parents, church and school? I would say that television in general is such a popular medium now for children and even young adults to show how different moral stories effects people. Say, if you're not from a single parent household like in Gilmore Girls, it gives you an insight into both the hardships and beauty of that kind of life and it effects you more because you are visually seeing it, opposed to hearing of it from parents or schools. I personally view it that way. Do you connect more with male, or female characters? I tend to connect more with female characters because I can place myself in their shoes and I can see them from a better perspective Do you feel that you are faced with weak, stereotypical roles for women in television? No, not particularly. Not anymore at least. If anything television shows will usually have at least one if not more strong centered female character, such as Gilmore Girls, Grey's Anatomy, Buffy The Vampire Slayer etc Do you feel as though the Gilmore Girls break through this stereotype with modern day women like Lorelai and Rory, or do you feel they stick with the female stereotypes, because of Emily? I think they definately break the stereotype of the female being a weak character - and even the character of Emily, though stereotypical in many ways is a strong female character. Out of Rory, Lorelai, and Emily – not taking age into consideration, who do you feel you connect most with and why? In all honesty, I would probably say Rory - not because of the similiar age but rather the experiences she has gone through and the storylines that she has been presented in, they are more relatable to me ...but that is actually probably because of my age and because I still have to grow as woman, just as Rory does. Does Rory’s determination in academia spur you on to work harder in school/college? Not particularly in the college area, but definately when I watch the show and listen to how the characters speak to one another, the dialogue that is used, Rory's determination for academia - it inspires me to be more intellectually challanged, but not in my college life Does your family expect you to grow up to be a certain person? i.e be a wife and have Children? Yes, there are expectations on me from my parents. For instance, I wouldn't say I was pressed into going to university but there was definately pressure. I am the younger of two children and my sibling is slightly older and far more academic than I am, so that contributed to the pressure or at least in my mind it did because of the comparison. If so, does seeing lives on television outside of what you parents have in mind for you, make you aware that you do have other choices? Yes, seeing how characters on television cope with everyday life outside of college or outside of their norm definately helps you to see that you have far more choices than you would think. Do you think it is unrealistic that girls can lead lives like Rory does, but in the real world. I.e well behaved, strives to do well in school etc. No, I don't think it is unrealistic. In fact I have a friends who strives to do well in school, who has always been hard working but I think all of the characteristics that Rory has, always been well behaved, striving to do well in school, her moral high ground is a little much and would be rare to find in a person - but definately not unrealistic Do you think it is unrealistic that women can lead lives like Lorelai does, but in the real world. I.e, successfully raise a child on her own, for the child to turn out as a good citizen, and for her to have a successful career etc. I think the way Lorelai raised Rory - how someone took her in when she was 16, gave her a job etc is slightly unrealistic just because so many people today are far much more pessismistic for so many reasons..but the way she handles life now, is very much present in reality. There are many single, working mothers who seem to get by just fine - and I suppose it helps that Lorelai lives in a small town where everyone know everyone. So it would just depend on various situations, such as location, the people who surround you etc Hope that helps, might not make sense but that just me Good luck with it

How old are you?
26 Are you male or female? F How many hours of television do you watch per week? 15+ (I DVR a LOT). On a scale of 1-5 (one being not at all, and 5 being very much) how much does the Gilmore Girls influence you in your identity and life choices? 2 Do you feel that you get most of your moral stories from the television, or other areas of life such as parents, church and school? Parents Do you connect more with male, or female characters? Female Do you feel that you are faced with weak, stereotypical roles for women in television? Not really. Possibly because of my show choices though. Do you feel as though the Gilmore Girls break through this stereotype with modern day women like Lorelai and Rory, or do you feel they stick with the female stereotypes, because of Emily? I feel that it shows a cross-section of what women are like. Out of Rory, Lorelai, and Emily – not taking age into consideration, who do you feel you connect most with and why? Probably Lorelai. Rory is more my age but I've had more of a life like Lorelai than I've had of Rory. Trying to do the best with what you've got after doing stupid things as a kid. Does Rory’s determination in academia spur you on to work harder in school/college? Yes. Especially when she was in high school. Does your family expect you to grow up to be a certain person? i.e be a wife and have Children? Yes and no. My parents want grandchildren but there not a lot of pressure. If so, does seeing lives on television outside of what you parents have in mind for you, make you aware that you do have other choices? Not really. I think the other choices in my life are self evident w/ out TV. Do you think it is unrealistic that girls can lead lives like Rory does, but in the real world. I.e well behaved, strives to do well in school etc. Not unrealistic at all. Many women do. Do you think it is unrealistic that women can lead lives like Lorelai does, but in the real world. I.e, successfully raise a child on her own, for the child to turn out as a good citizen, and for her to have a successful career etc. I think it's possible, as she's worked really hard to get where she got to in life. She made mistakes but got help and worked her way up. It's not easy, but certainly possible.

How old are you? 19
Are you male or female? Female How many hours of television do you watch per week? No more than 20 hours On a scale of 1-5 (one being not at all, and 5 being very much) how much does the Gilmore Girls influence you in your identity and life choices? 1 Do you feel that you get most of your moral stories from the television, or other areas of life such as parents, church and school? Depends on what subject Do you connect more with male, or female characters? IRL I connect more with males, on TV it totally depends on the personalities of the characters Do you feel that you are faced with weak, stereotypical roles for women in television? Deffinatly not. Do you feel as though the Gilmore Girls break through this stereotype with modern day women like Lorelai and Rory, or do you feel they stick with the female stereotypes, because of Emily? Gilmore Girls has a very realistic view on real life, because there are Lorelai's, Rory's and Emily's in this world. Out of Rory, Lorelai, and Emily – not taking age into consideration, who do you feel you connect most with and why? I would have to say Rory. Does Rory’s determination in academia spur you on to work harder in school/college? No, not really. I have always been a person who loves/loved school, but, I do have gotten more passioned about my goals/future because of Rory. Does your family expect you to grow up to be a certain person? i.e be a wife and have Children? No, they don't expect much from me... So, I basically just live my life. If so, does seeing lives on television outside of what you parents have in mind for you, make you aware that you do have other choices? --- Do you think it is unrealistic that girls can lead lives like Rory does, but in the real world. I.e well behaved, strives to do well in school etc. It's deff not unrealistic, I think every girl can be a Rory and perhaps there are girls who are like her, but, I don't think you can be 100% like Rory, because you are your own person and so is Rory. Do you think it is unrealistic that women can lead lives like Lorelai does, but in the real world. I.e, successfully raise a child on her own, for the child to turn out as a good citizen, and for her to have a successful career etc. It's not unrealistic, because in this modern day and life, you do have woman just like Lorelai.

How old are you? 30
Are you male or female? Female How many hours of television do you watch per week? About 6 On a scale of 1-5 (one being not at all, and 5 being very much) how much does the Gilmore Girls influence you in your identity and life choices? 2 Do you feel that you get most of your moral stories from the television, or other areas of life such as parents, church and school? Other areas...mostly my parents Do you connect more with male, or female characters? Female Do you feel that you are faced with weak, stereotypical roles for women in television? For the most part, no. Do you feel as though the Gilmore Girls break through this stereotype with modern day women like Lorelai and Rory, or do you feel they stick with the female stereotypes, because of Emily? They show more independent women. Even Emily, in her own way is an independent female. She is a strong character, who lives in a closed minded society. But when compared to a character like Shira, you really see her inner strength. Out of Rory, Lorelai, and Emily – not taking age into consideration, who do you feel you connect most with and why? Im a lot like Rory. I really identify with her. She's personable, objective, and wants the best for the people she loves. Does Rory’s determination in academia spur you on to work harder in school/college? No, that was part of me before Rory existed Does your family expect you to grow up to be a certain person? i.e be a wife and have Children? No...my mom is alot like Lorelai. She just wants me to be happy. If so, does seeing lives on television outside of what you parents have in mind for you, make you aware that you do have other choices? n/a Do you think it is unrealistic that girls can lead lives like Rory does, but in the real world. I.e well behaved, strives to do well in school etc. No. Im living that kind of life now. Do you think it is unrealistic that women can lead lives like Lorelai does, but in the real world. I.e, successfully raise a child on her own, for the child to turn out as a good citizen, and for her to have a successful career etc. I think parts of Lorelai's life (like when Rory was growing up) are unrealistic.

How old are you?
19 Are you male or female? female. How many hours of television do you watch per week? i rarely watch tv. probably 1 hour-2hours tops. On a scale of 1-5 (one being not at all, and 5 being very much) how much does the Gilmore Girls influence you in your identity and life choices? 3. I think that its showed me that anything is possible but not everything is based on this show. Do you feel that you get most of your moral stories from the television, or other areas of life such as parents, church and school? mostly from shows. i think they show a lot of moral stories that are more obvious than others. Do you connect more with male, or female characters? female. Do you feel that you are faced with weak, stereotypical roles for women in television? no. i don't believe in stereotypes. Do you feel as though the Gilmore Girls break through this stereotype with modern day women like Lorelai and Rory, or do you feel they stick with the female stereotypes, because of Emily? i think they deal with real issues about family. i mean thats pretty much what the show is about; family. Its just about the conflicts families have and how they may never go away because thats family. thats just how it is. Out of Rory, Lorelai, and Emily – not taking age into consideration, who do you feel you connect most with and why? Lorelai. Our love lives are very alike. Like Lorelai, I run away after a certain point. Also I can never seem to find that one guy and when I do, it never works out. But yet again, unlike Lorelai, I get along with my mother for the most part. Also because I do make the kind of mistakes that Lorelai does. I'm not really like Emily or Rory. Lorelai is the one I'm most alike with. Does Rory’s determination in academia spur you on to work harder in school/college? It does. I mean she had to work really hard to where she got and even though I'm not half as smart as she is as I deal with learning disabilities and ADHD, it still makes me strive for more. Does your family expect you to grow up to be a certain person? i.e be a wife and have Children? No, not really. They just expect me to be the best person I can be. If so, does seeing lives on television outside of what you parents have in mind for you, make you aware that you do have other choices? Even though they don't really have expectations for me, it does make me think of my other options I have open. Do you think it is unrealistic that girls can lead lives like Rory does, but in the real world. I.e well behaved, strives to do well in school etc. Not really. I mean if you really want something, you can have. Granted you would have to work a lot harder than Rory did but still you can have anything you want if you work for it. Do you think it is unrealistic that women can lead lives like Lorelai does, but in the real world. I.e, successfully raise a child on her own, for the child to turn out as a good citizen, and for her to have a successful career etc. I think it is unrealistic. I mean its hard to raise a kid on your own. My mom had to do it but with four kids. And they go out to eat everyday, multiple times a day. Thats a lot of money. Plus she buys other stuff that cost alot of money. Then again, some people get lucky. So it really depends on the person.
