The privileged prep school teens on Manhattan's Upper East Side first learn that Serena van der Woodsen (Blake Lively, "The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants") is back in town the way they learn all the important news in their lives ?? from the blog of the all-knowing albeit ultra-secretive Gossip Girl. No one knows Gossip Girl's identity, but everyone in this exclusive and complicated vicious circle relies on her website and text messages for the latest scoop. Even Serena's closest friend, Blair Waldorf (Leighton Meester, "Entourage"), is surprised to find that Serena has suddenly ended her self-imposed exile to boarding school and returned to Manhattan.

Once the Upper East Side's most notorious party girl, Serena's reasons for returning are mysterious, although they may have something to do with her younger brother Eric (Connor Paolo, "Alexander"). Whatever the reasons, the change in Serena is obvious, especially to Blair, whose friendship with Serena has always been competitive and difficult. When Serena was out of the picture, Blair enjoyed her time in the spotlight and she has no intention of going back to living in Serena's shadow. Their uneasy relationship is further complicated by Blair's boyfriend Nate (Chace Crawford, "The Covenant"), a young man uneasy with all the privileges that have been handed to him by his high-powered father Howie "The Captain" Archibald (Sam Robards, "The West Wing"). Now that Serena is back, Blair will have to fight to hold onto Nate's attention. It also remains to be seen whether Blair's loyal lieutenants ?? Katy (newcomer Nan Zhang) and Isabel (newcomer Nicole Fiscella) ?? will remain by her side or break ranks to follow Serena.

The tension between Blair and Serena isn't lost on anyone in this crowd, since they all live for gossip and scandal ?? along with fashion, shopping and partying in Manhattan's trendiest hot spots. This is a world you have to be born into, full of wealth, power, and people like Chuck (Ed Westwick, "Children of Men"). A friend of Nate's since childhood, Chuck leads a reckless life, and constantly pushes Nate to explore his dark side.

The proverbial fish-out-of-water at the prep school are Dan (Penn Badgley, "John Tucker Must Die," "The Bedford Diaries") and his sister Jenny (Taylor Momsen, "Paranoid Park," "How The Grinch Stole Christmas"), middle-class kids whose background keeps them on the fringes of this exclusive clique. Dan and Jenny are attending the school at the insistence of their father Rufus (Matthew Settle, "Into The West"), a former rocker turned art gallery owner, determined to give his kids a first-class education. Rufus has a history with Serena's mother Lily (Kelly Rutherford, "Melrose Place"), a socialite who hides her past as a dancer and rock groupie. When a chance encounter brings Dan to Serena's attention, he suddenly finds himself dating the girl of his dreams. The more Dan discovers about the real Serena, the more he's challenged to make sense of her world. Dan's sister Jenny is the youngest of the group and wants desperately to be accepted. The price she'll have to pay for popularity will take a toll, but at the moment, Jenny is just thrilled to have entry into this glamorous world.

Dan and Serena's relationship is further complicated by the arrival of Dan's friend Vanessa (casting TBD), a Brooklyn rebel and loner who doesn't approve of Serena's world of money, fashion shows and fundraisers. Vanessa's attempts to pull him back to his roots will cause friction between Dan and Serena.

Keeping track of the shifting friendships, jealousies and turmoil in this wealthy and complex world isn't easy, but it's what Gossip Girl does best.

Filmed in New York and based on the popular series of young-adult novels by Cecily von Ziegesar, "Gossip Girl" is from Alloy Entertainment in association with Warner Bros. As the books grew in popularity so did the concerns about them with some critics of teen lit, labeling them dangerous and too salty for the young and impressionable audience.

So here's a paradox: the books teenaged girls are reading are not the ones adults arond them would like them to be reading. Is it the same with TV's version?

"that's a challenge we had to face right at the start," agrees Savage. "We stick by TV's standards and practices meaning the language is toned down considerably. We made some basic plot changes, too. In our storyline Blair Waldorf (Leighton Meester) emerges as more of the bad girl, the villain, although with redeeming features that the viewers will find out about as the story goes forward. the good girl, SErena van der Woodsen (Blake Lively) has secrets we'll untangle as we go along - in the books her brother was older - he's younger here 'cause she needed an understanding and impressionable sibling"

Serena and Blake symbolize the two sides of GG just as Ryan and Seth personalized those differences in The OC. Savage says it was essential the series be shot in New York city and not someplace else - like Toronto.

Down in the hotel hallway sits Meester in her hotel suite. First impressions: she has turned brunette for this part. "Had to," she shrugs. "Serena is the blonde here. Did it bother me? Not really, it's just the time it'll take to keep it this way."

You'll notice Meester from 24 where she was Ali, House where she was Ali, and Veronica Mars where she was Carrie. Now she's getting ready to settle down for at least several seasons of spinning evil.

"Oh come on!" she laughs. "Blair is all of 17. She's thinking what every 17 year old girl thinks about; boys and clothes. Can she help it if she's got an expense account at Saks or wherever? And a chauffeured limo? And her mom's apartment is to die for? I see her as hurt- her best friend Serena ditched her without explanation and now plans getting back Nate (Chace Crawford) Blair's boyfriend."

Penn Badgley next door is also 21 and a veteran of TV drama. "I try not to get too excited," he says certainly because two previous outings The Mountain and The Bedford Diaries each lasted less than a season. "The pilot was easy to shoot, they know what they're doing. I think this is the one that cold zoom off. But I'm 21 - I think I can just barely make it as an 18 year old, capturing that naivete again."

Gossip Girl airs Tuesdays at 7 pm on CTV and Wednesdays at 9 pm on CW starting this fall.

Ohh well it's just a week closer to us seeing it.

I read that article in the Toronto Star and I was shocked that they called Blair the bad girl/villan.

They also had a really pretty photo on the cover of the whole cast.

The sudsy "Gossip Girl" has been one of the most talked-about shows at the TCA press tour. At a bustling party for The CW's stars the other night, I pulled aside Leighton Meester, who plays Blair, for some scoop on her role in the show. Here are some highlights of our conversation:

On the best part of playing Blair: "She kind of is a quintessential bitch, and I would say that's awesome and I love to play that — believe me, it's really really fun. But it's not just that, and that's the best thing. She has all these issues that she's dealing with that I think a lot of young women are going to be able to relate to and look up to. She's very vulnerable and very insecure, and everybody, obviously, can relate to that. She's dealing with issues of friends and family and, you know, love, boyfriend, school, body image, whatever. And she's dealing with that under a lot of scrutiny. It's so much pressure, and I think she takes a lot of that out on herself."

On reading the Gossip Girl books: "I actually read the script knowing that they were based on books, and I was like, 'I have to get my hands on these books, I have to!'" But now I'm really kind of wary to keep reading. I don't want to start off and be disappointed or spoil it — and also because I don't think [the show]'s going to follow precisely along with the books. Which, you know, it shouldn't. It should have its own life."

On playing a character people already know: "I've met a lot of girls who really love the books, and they really mean something to them, and my character means something to them, which is just really wonderful. It's so wonderful, even though it's kind of scary and weird to play something that somebody might feel really strongly about who they are. I'm kind of fearful someone's going to come up and and be like, 'Blair wouldn't do that!' But I feel like they're going to be really happy. Everybody that I've met that has been really into the books, they are absolutely thrilled."

On how she relates to her character: "I feel like she's got really good things about her that I would like to think I have too. In some respects she's really confident, and she's really cool, and she's sweet, and she's super smart, and really driven, and she knows what she wants, and she's obviously well dressed. But aside from that there's some things that are a huge challenge and I really will admit that it's kind of intimidating."

On Blair's insecurities: "I can definitely see how her mother makes her insecure, and that's sort of the beginning point to how she reacts with everybody else, how she reacts with even her best friend, who she is so jealous of and so insecure about. And she's so freaked out about being the most beautiful girl in the room."

On mean girls: "I've wondered since my first day in school ever if people are just inherently mean or bad or how they get that way. ... I think probably I have been that [mean] girl, and you know, somebody thinks about it for the rest of their life, and that's how they're going to remember me, which is really sad, cause I'm not! ... I think people can be nice, but I think especially in high school when they kind of feel that they have nothing better to do and the only most important thing is high school, they tend to be mean."
