'Heroes' worship

Heroes, NBC As TV audiences go, University of Maryland senior Steve Donlin and his Delta Sigma Phi fraternity brothers are a network programmer's dream: Young, educated, technically savvy and on the brink of professional careers, they represent the demographic most resistant to television's allure and most desired by advertisers.

Tonight, between 15 and 20 of them will gather in their College Park frat house to watch what the 21-year-old Donlin calls one of the biggest viewing events of the year - the return of NBC's Heroes, which has been on hiatus since March 5.

"Are you kidding? Of course, we'll be there - we can't wait," Donlin says. "We've been going online to read the comic strips that correspond with the show and talking about them since Heroes went off the air. And now that it's coming back on TV, we'll be there. No doubt about it."

That kind of excitement and loyalty makes Heroes by far the hottest new series of the network season. Starring a cast led by Masi Oka and Hayden Panettiere, it tells the story of seemingly ordinary young people who discover that they possess extraordinary powers - and set out to save the world. Still in its first season, the show attracts a weekly average of 14.8 million viewers.
