Dark Knight Rises: Theater Shooting In Colorado

Dark Knight Rises: Theater shooting in Colorado

Batman, Dark Knight Rises: Gunman Kills 12 At Midnight Film Screening Near Denver

My heart goes out to the victims and their families.

Such a senseless tragedy.

Thanks for creating a thread about this subject!

I was thinking about doing so earlier in the forum. We're going to the theaters this weekend to see The Amazing Spiderman 3D, and after not being in a while I think I'm going to be paranoid sitting there now. I always imagined [seeing as how there is no metal detectors or etc. at theaters] that if someone wanted to unexpectedly hurt a large number of people, a dark movie theater would seem like a place they would pick [and that has always scared me].

It's sort of like "what would you do'? Or what could you - there's only three exits in theaters and none are in the upper levels, and there's really nowhere to hide. It's very sad that going out to a mall or a movie or any other public place is always accompanied by a risk these days. It would be hard enough protecting yourself in those situations - imagine those put in the situations that have kids with them. Terrible.

My thoughts are with everyone that experienced this tragedy first-hand.

Sadly, the fact that he was wearing a "Bane-style" gas mask and body armour I think was done purposely considering the movie and I don't think it should be played up by media - that's exactly what he wants; to be remembered and he doesn't deserve the notoriety. The fact that a 3 month old is in the hospital for this tragedy is horrible [although I wonder just who would have their 3 month old out at a action movie screening at midnight to be honest].

SuperMommy - I do agree that this is indeed a terrible tragedy and should never have happened. That said, I entirely disagree about it having a connection to the movie at all. He was wearing common body armor similar to what we have seen others wear in bank robbery attempts and such. The gas mask-Bane thing is coincidental in my opinion; he wanted to use tear gas and that's the only thing to keep it from being inhaled by himself.

I personally think that he selected this particular movie only because it was basically a guaranteed sold out movie. He would be able to guarantee the largest number of people in one location and do the most amount of damage. Even if he claims to be a person or to be trying to recreate something from the movie he's just looking for justification. He would have done whether this movie existed or not and found some personal justification for it.

Sometimes it's hard to deal with situations like this. I too have always considered theaters to be high-risk. All those people stuck in a dark room. But I do think this is an isolated incident. And when you really consider the number of times you have been to the movies and how often something like this happens it's really unlikely. We face dangers everyday when we get on the road and drive yet we continue to drive. If we let things like this stop us from doing things we are giving these people exactly what they want

@jmcharries when they were arresting Holmes he said he was "the Joker" so I think Supermommy is right, and that he was playing it up for the movie.

Also, the baby was released and home now, so that's good. It could have been a lot worse for that family, cuz there was also another little kid the mom had with her, but a 19 year old kid pretty much saved them, even though he was shot himself. He put them behind himself. But I also wonder why a woman would take her small children out to a movie like that, that late at night.

The whole thing is so terrible, I feel like crying every time I read an article about it. It's just so scary, and it's fairly close to where I live.

I am extremely saddened by this news from the moment i read it online.
But, What the firetruck? There is no metal detectors or etc. at theaters in the US? What kind of stupidity is that? Every mall and every shop must have a security man, at least that's what we have in India, that's the basic orthodox everywhere in the Asia.

Its so sad that so many innocent people died just because some psycho thinks he's a "Joker", i mean that's just messed up in whole another level. With that being said, i hope he gets death penalty and burns in hell.
R.I.P. Jessica Ghawi and all the other victims.

@ashleabeep - I can understand that he was playing it up for the movie. However, my point is that I do not believe the movie itself to be responsible. With a person this mentally unstable he would have eventually done the same thing or something similar and found some other justification.

I always get concerned when something like this happens or somebody copies something from a movie and that movie (or TV show) is blamed instead of the individual(s). It's easy to blame something or try to find a reason or justification when really the person responsible may have had no real reason other than a mental problem.

I was sad when I heard about it and shocked that someone would do something like that.
