Thanks for posting Cal. It seems like the show is creating a lot of attention and has been spoken of positively. I hope the ratings are good this week!

Here's another, with an awesome quote from Ann Biderman about casting Ben. Thanks to Vinni at Ben Support for the link.

Quote:
McKenzie auditioned for producers and network execs, something that many known actors feel is beneath them.

"I was impressed that he was willing to read," says Ann Biderman, executive producer of the drama. "He's very modest." Though Biderman wasn't a regular viewer of "The O.C.," she had a particular aversion, she says, to casting "kids with stubble and sunglasses. I knew there was a stigma from 'The O.C.'"

She got over it at his reading. "He was soulful. He has a gravity that is lovely -- apart from his being beautiful. His understanding of the character came shining through; I felt like he really understood this world."
BENJAMIN MCKENZIE FREE OF THE 'O.C.' IN 'SOUTHLAND' - New York Post

Quote:
Maybe when attempting to make small talk with gang members and convicted felons. McKenzie, however, is that Hollywood rarity: an educated actor. He graduated from the University of Charlotte(sic) with a degree in foreign affairs and economics. He thought he might become a lawyer, like his dad, but "followed the pretty girls over to the drama department." He is not dating anyone, and is a self-described loner who likes historical biographies and The New Yorker. He does not watch "Gossip Girl," a direct descendant of "The O.C.," produced by the same people: "It's not my thing." He does not have a MySpace or Facebook page. "All I really have is an email address," he says. "I'm pretty hip, for 1994." Like his dad, McKenzie is a political junkie; he campaigned for Obama and met him twice. "I don't think he knew who I was," McKenzie says, laughing. "And honestly, it would disturb me a bit if he did."
Ben is once again so modest and so awesome.

Thanks for posting. I hadn't seen that one yet. I liked the comments from Biderman. Ben is too funny talking about being hip for 1994. lol. I didn't think he was into all of the internet/networking and such.

Ben always comes out with some great lines when he's being interviewed. He's just really smart and funny. I think that with him enjoying his privacy, the last thing he'd want to do is expose himself to the world with a blog or anything like that.

Very true. He does have some great lines when he is being interviewed. The line on Ellen about smelling delightful and wonderful (however that went) was great!

He was so cute on Ellen talking about his visit to that shop to get stuff for Oscar and how it didn't work. I bet Oscar would much prefer wrestling in the garden with a side of beef to a sound machine and a lavender diffuser!

ETA. Another interview. A lot about his background. Mostly stuff we know, but with a cute story from high school. Don't you just love him?

Quote:
His parents always supported him, even in defeat. He played football in high school and remembers it taught him to focus. "It's quite violent but there's a lot of technique and strategy and a lot of discipline - being from Texas - almost militaristic discipline. And I really responded well to that. It made a lot of sense to me, because your adolescence is a tough time to decide who you are and what you want in your life and to act on your own for the first time.

"So I remember losing our last playoff game my senior year and realizing it was over and sitting in the kitchen with my father talking about it with my father. 'Are you OK?' I said, 'Yeah, it's fine, fine, fine.' Then he got up to hug me and I started bawling. And that was a moment of realizing that that chapter had closed and there was a new chapter. I didn't really focus on academics in high school. I did fine, but it was secondary to other things that were going on - football and girls. And it was a realization of a couple things: one, I needed to go on to new things and two, that I really did have that support of my family behind me. It was very comforting."

And new interview clip on video. He's really looking so good. Thanks again to Vinni for the link.

Aww, so sweet. That was a very nice interview. That is really great his parents have always been so supportive of him. I am sure that has helped him stay grounded. Thanks for posting.

I couldn't watch the other interview as I am at work now and can't do the audio. However, did you see his stomach in the begining of the interview?

I never noticed that! LOL.

Here's an interview on AOL with 12 questions. (Scroll through the arrows). It's quite spoilerish about the show but he says good things about working with Michael and an interesting answer to #12 about whether he'll do a romantic comedy. He seems pretty sure he'll do one, so I am wondering if it's going to be the full-length version of Eight Percent? I hope so.

He also talks about Stanford. He is still signed on for it.

Very interesting interview. Thanks for posting.

I wonder if it is Eight Percent. What is the movie he has on IMDPro? I can't recall the name of it, maybe that is what he is referring to.

Glad you liked the interview. I thought it was awesome. It's been transcribed on Ben Support so it's much easier to read. (Thanks to Loveben).

What he says about working with Michael reminds me of what he said about working with Autumn.

ben_support: Inside TV Q and A with Ben

Oh, I remember something about that film. I think IIRC that it might have been some kind of thriller, but I am probably wrong. I was just thinking Ben might be talking about Eight Percent because of what Alexander's been saying.

Also, pics from the screening last night. (Thanks to Hanna.)

Ben and Michael!

I can't remember the name either. It would be really great to see Eight Percent as a full movie though I really enjoyed the story line. I have to go and vote again for it!

I just watched the interview with Inside TV. Thanks for posting. It is always nice to hear Ben's voice.

I love hearing Ben's voice!

Here's another new interview from the Texas Monthly. LOL at how tongue-in-cheek he can be! He has such a good sense of humour.

Quote:
You’re not in the pages of Star or Us Weekly. You’re not even on PerezHilton. Is that a conscious effort, or did it just happen that way?

You know, I try so hard. I walk around Rodeo Drive with a megaphone, yelling at the top of my lungs, “Someone take a picture of me!” But they won’t do it. I guess I’m doing something wrong. No, I just don’t go for that kind of stuff. I’m okay with being less famous.

What have you learned about acting since The O.C.?

So many things. I’m very grateful for that experience. And it’s nice to have a second go at a series where you know so much more than you did the first time. I understand the pacing much better, how quick it can be, how slow it can seem at times. I’m far less intimidated by it than I was when I got The O.C., because I didn’t know anything back then. It’s a much more enjoyable situation because I can focus on the work and not have to freak out about any of the other stuff, which was new to me at the time—the recognition, the sort of pop-cultural thing The O.C. became.

And The O.C. had a much different audience than Southland will, which probably makes a difference.

Exactly. And the Sherman character I’m playing now is much closer to who I am in age and life experience, so it’s a better fit for me. And I’m working with better people. Not that I wasn’t before, but whenever you do a show with John Wells, the creators and directors, cast and crew, it’s just a terrific group of people. It’s the best possible working environment you could have, television or film.

Do you still talk to your O.C. castmates?

Oh, all the time. We have dinner every night. We reenact scenes.

That’s exactly what everyone wants to hear.

I know, isn’t it? I get asked that all the time, so I’m going to go full bore. Every now and then I run into people, but we don’t really hang out. I’m still very good friends with Adam Brody, but other than that, people’s lives go on.

Will we ever catch you playing a teenager again? You still could.

Not unless it’s a Stepbrothers-esque comedy. I’m thirty years old. I don’t think I’ll be playing eighteen anytime soon. Maybe if there’s a director who’s nearly blind, he might cast me, but I think those days are behind me now. I’ll play the father of a teenager, how about that? In the relaunch of The O.C. in 2020.

It was a fun interview. Very amusing. Also, interesting about his character and the working environment. He was amazing and authentic as Ryan so I can't wait to see him develop Ben Sherman, seeing as he says this is a better fit for him. It'll be so interesting to watch him work on a character he has more of a feel for. I seriously think if this show gets picked up, Ben will have a really good chance at winning an award for it.

Yes, I saw that he'll be on the Today show. I hope clips get put up somewhere.
