IT'S OK AGAIN TO LOVE A REVITALIZED 'O.C.'
By ADAM BUCKMAN

November 5, 2006 -- Nobody broods like Ryan Atwood. As played by Ben McKenzie, Ryan is the world champion of brooders - a man of few words, and even fewer expressions.

And he's at his brooding best in the new season of "The O.C." - the series' fourth - which got under way last Thursday.

What's Ryan brooding about? Understandably, he's still sad about the death last season of the love of his life - Marissa Cooper (Mischa Barton) - in a car accident caused by his rival, Kevin Volchok (Cam Gigandet).

Now, not only is Ryan out for vengeance, he's in a really bad mood too!

He shouldn't be, though. I hate to say this about someone's death - even a fictional one - but the demise of Marissa has invigorated this show.

And that means it's OK to love "The O.C." again.

My own track record with this show goes like this: On Aug. 24, 2003, I wrote, "I'm hooked on 'The O.C.'" On Oct. 28, 2004, I ushered in the show's second season with, " 'The O.C.' remains a pleasure to behold." During season three, on Nov. 27, 2005, I wrote, "This show is suddenly creakier than an old staircase."

Sorry for being fickle, but last fall, it really seemed like "The O.C." had run out of gas.

This fall, however, the show feels energized. With Mischa Barton now gone, cutie Rachel Bilson - who plays Marissa's friend, Summer Roberts - gets a well-deserved bump up in the pecking order.

This season she's a freshman at Brown, where she is throwing herself into activist causes.

Back home in Orange County, boyfriend Seth (Adam Brody) struggles with their separation.

Also coping with Marissa's death is her mother, Julie Cooper (the delightfully wicked Melinda Clarke), who has become bitter and cynical.

"The world is an amoral toilet bowl," she sneers in this week's episode, in a conversation with daughter Kaitlin (Willa Holland). "One day, we'll all be flushed!"

It's not nearly time to flush away "The O.C." though. I have seen the first four episodes of the new season (thank you, Fox publicists!) and I have to say that watching them was wholly enjoyable.

The show seems cleverer this year, even poking fun at itself. In the fourth episode, Summer and Seth are watching "The Valley," the fictitious prime-time soap that was once her favorite show. Realizing that she doesn't enjoy it anymore, she complains, "All they do is create fake problems for fake people just to distract viewers from the real problems of the world!"

She might have been talking about "The O.C." itself. And she would be right, of course.

Newsgasm: On Election Day Choose The Cohens

In honor of election day and the series-low ratings for the fourth Season Premiere of The O.C. last Thursday, I am imploring with all of you once and future OC-fans to check out the show this week as you get two, count 'em two, chances to catch up with Ryan, Seth, Summer, Marissa, err, Taylor and the rest of the gang.

Due to the anemic ratings coniciding with a surprise surge in quality, Fox will be airing The O.C. two new eps this week: Wednesday at 9 PM and Thursday at 9 PM. Sure it's up against formidable competition, but it's still more than worth checking out. FOR REALZ!

Mischa film news

http://mountainx.com/blogs/ae/2006/11/07/196

Beverly Hills Ain’t Got Nothin’ On Montford
Posted by Steve Shanafelt / Nov 7th, 2006 / Posted in A&E

Could it be that low-budget indie-flick Don’t Fade Away will be the first film to truly capture the cultural essence of downtown Asheville? The $1.7 million cinematic vehicle for The O.C. star Mischa Barton has booked a surprising number of local haunts for the shoot. According to sources within the production company, locations such as Barley’s, the Orange Peel, Haywood Park Hotel and The Mountaineer Inn — not to mention the local Hooters — will be used for shooting. But the reflection of local culture doesn’t appear to end there, as an outdoor music event bearing a striking similarity to the Lake Eden Arts Festival will also appear in the film. Strangely, the film appears to have practically no online presence — typically considered to be a key buzz-building tool for indie productions — and even the film’s title doesn’t appear on search engines such as the Internet Movie Database. This makes confirming some rumors, such as the cameo appearance of rapper Ja Rule in the film, difficult at best. The film is set to wrap local production at the end of November.

Melinda Clarke newsbit in People Magazine

SPOTLIGHT ON THE O.C.'S

Melinda Clarke

(picture)

You love to hate her, and now you sort of ahve to pity her. Clarke, 37, is the FOX drama's grasping Julie Cooper, whose daughter (Mischa Barton) was killed off in a shocker in last season's finale.

ON LIFE POST-MISCHA

"In the beginning it felt like something was really missing. It's funny - my friends were asking me how I was, they felt like I'd checked out. There was quite a sadness there..."

ON PLAYING A (RYHMES WITH RICH)

"As we've gone along I've always treated Julie as a human being just trying to survive. Julie is more complex now than ever - plus now she's motivated by revenge"

ON HER OWN CHILDHOOD NEAR ORANGE COUNTY

"I grew up in Dana Point, a few miles south of where our characters live on the show. I knew it was a beautiful area, but very few people were aware of this coastline and its specialness. Being on a show that allows the world to know what Orange County is - it's been a surreal experience"

Autumn Reeser

Taylor Townsend, Autumn Reeser’s character on The O.C., is the kind of girl you love to hate. Ambitious and overachieving, she is an unapologetic social climber. And she’s gorgeous, too. Last season she made her mark on the Harbor School, filling the void left by the expulsion and, later, death of Mischa Barton’s character, Marissa Cooper. For The O.C.’s fourth season, Autumn is ready to take center stage in this privileged world of Beemers and babes. And we’ll be watching.

STUFF: The O.C. has become such a gigantic cultural phenomenon. Were you nervous about jumping into the cast?
AUTUMN: It happened so quickly. I went in to audition, and then two days later I was on the set. I really didn’t have much time to think about it. It’s happened before where all of a sudden I’m on a set with, like, Shelley Long or Mel Gibson. It’s trippy, but it’s also just another day of work.

Shelley Long and Mel Gibson? That does sound trippy.
You know, Mel Gibson is a very underestimated comedian. What’s happened to him is sad.

California Dream
If you think Autumn Reeser is the same conniving, manipulative, dean-seducing vixen she plays on The O.C., you’ve got a lot to learn.

You know, Mel Gibson is a very underestimated comedian. What’s happened to him is sad.

Were you a fan of teen dramas when you were growing up?
You weren’t anybody if you didn’t watch 90210! I really like the genre, because it can blend drama and comedy. I would never want to be on a show like CSI, because you’re just spouting technical jargon.

So, were you a Dylan woman or a Brandon woman? I was a Brandon woman—it was all about Jason Priestley. I’ve never been much for the bad boy. I haven’t really dated any; they’re not that appealing to me. Jason Priestley, Leonardo DiCaprio and Scott Wolf were my crushes.

Taylor is quite a nutjob. What’s it like playing someone who’s so out there?
I really love trying to find the line between going as far as I can and still making it believable.

Do you see any of yourself in her?
Yes, unfortunately. She really likes things to be a certain way, and I deal with my anxiety by organizing things. I’m not a big cleaner—like, I don’t get out the Tilex and spray things—but I’m a huge organizer. So there’s a little Taylor right there.

Last season Taylor was hooking up with her high-school dean. Do you find older men sexy?
There’s definitely something appealing about an older man. I had some older-man crushes when I was in high school and college, but there’s also something nice about growing with someone, and you can’t really do that when you date an older man. It’s kind of nice to be with someone who you’re learning about life with.

Are there any actors you have an older-guy crush on?
Sean Connery.

Girls always say Sean Connery!
And Pierce Brosnan is pretty cute. Is he gay? Wait, no. It’s Rupert Everett who’s gay.

So you like suave British guys?
Oh, Hugh Grant, yeah…all British guys, that’ll do it.

Can we expect more catfights between Taylor and Rachel Bilson’s character, Summer, this season?
Nope. The show is not set in high school anymore, so it’s like what happens in real life: You get over the whole catfight thing. Suddenly you’re like, Why was I so mean to that person? So I think that’s reflected on the show. There’s more dealing with Marissa’s death.

For a show about high school, it seems like lots of people get killed off. Do you ever get scared that you’re going to get a script that says you fall off a cliff?
I don’t think they can afford to lose more characters this year. Hopefully, we’ll all make it through alive.

You were born in California, right?
I’m from San Diego originally, and my dad’s a surfer. I grew up thinking it was so normal that everybody wore bathing suits under their clothes to school. I thought that’s just how it was done.

Do you surf?
I don’t. Oddly enough, I’m not a huge fan of the water. It scares me even though I spent my entire childhood at the beach. I know how to body surf, but that’s it. I just dated a lot of surfers! Literally, all of my boyfriends were surfers.

Do you think The O.C. is an accurate portrayal of what that area is like?
I actually do, but without quite as much drama. The basic frame of The O.C. world is similar—a lot of the attitudes and the lifestyle are similar to what I grew up in.

Since the show has such great music, do you have the most kick-ass iPod ever?
This last year has been the most musical year of my life. This is embarrassing, but I was not into music growing up. I acted in musical theater, so I know, like, the entire soundtrack to Rent. But if you play me anything from the ’90s, I have no idea what it is. So starting the show and getting an iPod has really changed my life.

How do you pick your music?
People send stuff to me. I also go to dance class three or four times a week, and I’ll hear stuff and ask the choreographer what it is.

That’s a lot of dancing. Is that your main way of keeping in shape?
My body’s become very strong over the last few years because of dancing. And I’m really proud of my body right now, because I’ve gotten out of it what I’ve been able to teach it to do in dance class.

What else do you do for fun?
I’ve been scrapbooking since I was 15, with three of my best girlfriends. We get together every Wednesday night and make scrapbooks.

Do you put makeup on each other and call boys you like?
Yes! There haven’t been any pillow fights yet, but we do cook and watch Project Runway.

Do you think your Stuff cover will get its own page in your scrapbook?
I’ll definitely make a page of my Stuff debut. It can have some rhinestones on it…or maybe I’ll pull out my Bedazzler.
