Teens and Television: Running Mates in the Race for Social Awareness While traditional debates may not attract the attention that they once did, television characters are the perfect vehicle for delivering social and political awareness to today's young adults. The O.C. recently offered a complete hour of political commentary, simply stated with the use of a t-shirt. Could television be the answer to raising the social consciousness of America? Sacramento, CA (PRWEB) November 13, 2006 -- With the November General Election just behind us, it is perhaps the perfect time to take a look at how mass-media has changed the way that political action campaigns gain shape in the American consciousness. No longer are televised debates the fodder of water cooler and coffee break conversation, as a matter of fact the number of people who actually view live political debates is down significantly from decades past. Instead, television series and massive television smear campaigns seem to be gaining in prevalence and in the number of voters on whom they are making an impact. Take for example, the Fox series, The O.C. Rachel Bilson's character, Summer Roberts has transformed significantly over the past few seasons from a socially unaware, spoiled rich kid to a politically aware, environmentally conscious college student. Thus, when Bilson appeared in this season's premiere wearing a t-shirt sporting the slogan, "More Trees, Less Bush", (available at http://www.cafepress.com/politicalgetup/615537) many viewers probably never gave the underlying message a second thought. While direct political statements, endorsements, etc. have in the past been considered best avoided on television shows such as The O.C., the message that the show's creators were attempting to get across to viewers was much less overt and perhaps even subliminal. The shirt's unique design (available at www.politicalgetup.com) was a great way to catch the attention of teens, who many feel need a push to become socially and politically aware and to ultimately get involved. While the storyline of The O.C has evolved over the past three seasons to become much more socially focused, this is not the first time that a television character has helped to make such a broad-spanning political statement. Ellen de Generes actually made a very similar social stance in 1997 on her show, Ellen which made a significant impact on the acceptance of homosexuality when Ellen herself came out as a lesbian during the filming of an episode. Additionally, All in the Family and Murphy Brown assisted in raising social and political awareness among viewers during the 1970s and 80s. So, while the idea of raising social consciousness is not new to mass-media The O.C. has definitely taken a new approach in reaching out to America's teens. Perhaps in the future, we will be fortunate enough to see more television dramas change their focus from shallow storylines to those that help to make viewers aware of what the current issues are and how they impact society as a whole. The "More Trees, Less Bush" shirt has become a hot seller among teens and young adults alike, and interested viewers can get their own at http://www.cafepress.com/politicalgetup/615537. ________________ Articles on McG (Producer of "The OC") and his new film "We are Marshall" http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=17398 http://www.justjared.com/2006/11/13/...rshall-stills/ http://news.cincinnati.com/apps/pbcs...40399/-1/CINCI http://www.herald-dispatch.com/apps/...33/1001/NEWS10 Last edited by vinni2; 11-14-2006 at 08:36 PM. |

Actor Benjamin McKenzie Hosts Red is for Emmy Party for Non-Profit Invisible Children
Date : 15 November 2006 From : 6:00pm Category : Charity Event Event Description : Sponsors Peroni and Yahoo! Food are Helping Put a Fresh Face to the Invisible Children of Africa while Inspiring Hollywood’s Elite On November 15, 2006, actor Benjamin McKenzie of the hit show “The OC” will host the Red is for Emmy Party at King King in Hollywood. A star-filled night, this event will feature special live performances from The Willowz and Big Japan. Media-based non-profit, Invisible Children, will be premiering their third installment for the Bracelet Campaign – “Emmy: The Story of an Orphan.” A blend of young Hollywood and loyal donors will be a part of the evening that is divided into two portions. There will be a cocktail portion from 6 p.m.- 8 p.m. and the Emmy Premiere Party from 9 p.m.-2 a.m. Guests are invited to one or both portions. Attendees include, but are not limited to Adam Brody, Rachel Bilson, Peter Gallagher, Kristen Bell and the cast of “Veronica Mars,” actress Krista Allen (“What About Brian”), MTV producer David Gale (“Jackass Number Two” and “Orange County”), Pete Wentz from Fall Out Boy and John Paul Dejoria of Paul Mitchell. Benjamin McKenzie became involved with the non-profit after his producing partner, Bill Thompson, discovered Invisible Children’s documentary page on MySpace. The blend of heartbreaking and empowering media focuses on Northern Uganda’s 20-year war – where children have been abducted from their homes and forced to fight as child soldiers in a violent rebel army – and the inspirational stories of the thousands of youth in America that have responded with action. McKenzie and Thompson were moved to do more than just watch and, together, they began to plan an event that would raise both awareness and money for the young non-profit. “I was incredibly moved watching the film ‘Invisible Children: Rough Cut,’” said actor Benjamin McKenzie. “It was tremendously touching to see such a dire situation being dealt with face-to-face through the good work of people my own age. I hope this event will draw attention to Uganda’s troubles, and provide Invisible Children with more resources to combat those problems.” The never-before-seen short film “Emmy: The Story of an Orphan” will premiere the third bracelet in Invisible Children’s Bracelet Campaign. A micro-economic program that is creating jobs in an unemployable war area, the Bracelet Campaign allows Ugandans living in displacement camps to generate a much-needed income. Each of the eight bracelets feature extraordinary stories that highlight one of the many ways Northern Ugandans have been affected by this unrelenting war: Emmy puts a face to the tragedy of AIDS in Africa, making this emergency far more relevant to a culture inundated with faceless statistics. The red bracelet is for Emmy. “We, at Invisible Children, feel incredibly lucky to have the support of people like Ben McKenzie and Bill Thompson,” said Jason Russell, founder and filmmaker of Invisible Children. “They have helped make this night possible and because of that more people will know about these invisible children and the crisis in Northern Uganda.” Invisible Children has also created exclusive limited-edition donation packages, including a previously unreleased silver bracelet that will only be sold at the Red is for Emmy party. All proceeds will go to Invisible Children and their efforts both in Northern Uganda and here in the United States. The event will be sponsored by Peroni Italian beer and Yahoo! Foods new cooking show “Cheap and Easy,” which will create exciting youth-inspired food at the exclusive donor cocktail reception. The evening is consisting of two important portions both featuring exterior red carpet arrivals. Attendees can attend both portions of the night. Please specify at rsvp@invisiblechildren.com. Cocktail Reception 6-8 p.m.: Attendees include celebrities, corporate sponsors, business executives/moguls and established donors. Arrivals start at 6 p.m. Emmy Premiere Party 9-2 a.m.: Attendees include celebrities, musicians, fashion moguls, film producers/directors and publishers. Arrivals start at 9 p.m. About Invisible Children Inc. Invisible Children Inc., established in 2004, is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing financial resources to invisible children by documenting their true, untold stories in a creative and relevant way, resulting in positive change. Invisible Children Inc. was formed after the release of the film “Invisible Children: Rough Cut”, which documents a war in Northern Uganda in which children are abducted by a rebel army and forced to fight as child soldiers. The filmmakers for “Invisible Children: Rough Cut”, Jason Russell, Bobby Bailey and Laren Poole, are also the founders of Invisible Children Inc. Currently Invisible Children Inc. employs over 150 people in the war-torn area of Northern Uganda and is putting 450 kids through school, with plans to see that number grow into the thousands. The organization is based in San Diego, California. Each bowl costs $15, and all proceeds go directly in the form of donations to the Capital Area Food Bank... The nearly 30 Austin restaurants donating soup and bread for the event include Wink, Zoot, Café Josie, Z Tejas and Upper Crust Bakery.
