Pre-upfront tidbits:
The most noteworthy thing about this year's broadcast program development meetings was that the networks spent more time laying out their big-picture strategies for next season and less time talking about specifics for the small screen. But that was a good thing, said most media buyers who attended last week's ABC, Fox, NBC and The CW presentations. "Let's face it, to see a two-minute clip of the funniest excerpts from one pilot, or to hear concept discussions on each show, doesn't really benefit anyone that much," said one media buyer, who asked not to be identified. [...] ABC brought in the cast of the already-announced Grey's Anatomy spinoff, tentatively titled Private Practice, to talk with buyers. The network will work in the story line as part of a two-hour episode of Grey's on May 10, before premiering the show next season. |

Ausiello: Rumor has it the Grey's spin-off killed your war-correspondents drama. True?
JDM: I got a phone call from Shonda the day before the Grey's spin-off was announced telling me that it does not affect my show whatsoever. As far as I know, we're going into production this summer for a mid-season replacement next year. The idea would be to do six or 13 episodes. I know everybody's saying it's on the back burner or dying a slow, painful death, but I don't think that's the case. Until I hear differently, we're moving forward with it. I haven't heard differently, and believe me, I've checked. I make sure that no one's forgetting about me over here. |

ABC FAMILY’S HIT ORIGINAL SERIES ‘KYLE XY’ RETURNS ON JUNE 11th
Second Season Brings More Questions And New Dangers To Kyle And The Trager Family Viewers have waited patiently to find out the secrets of Kyle’s past and now ABC Family has announced the second season premiere of the hit original series KYLE XY on Monday, June 11 (8:00 – 9:00 PM ET/PT). The all-new thirteen one-hour episodes star Matt Dallas (“Wannabe”), Marguerite MacIntyre (“The Days”), Bruce Thomas (“Legally Blonde”), April Matson (“Quintuplets”), Jean-Luc Bilodeau (“Ill Fated”), Chris Olivero (“24”), Kirsten Prout (“Elektra”) and newcomer Jaimie Alexander (“Rest Stop”). After Kyle’s (Dallas) long search for the secrets of his past, he finally comes face to face with the man that may hold the answers he longs for…Adam Baylin. With Adam’s help Kyle begins to realize just where he came from and what his potential might be. But with a twist of fate, Kyle finds himself back on the door-step of the family he left behind. Now under strict training of Tom Foss (Nicholas Lea) he must learn the full scope of his abilities, but keep it a secret from the family who just wants to help him return to the life of a normal teenager. Back in the world of the Tragers, Kyle must come to terms with his new double life and the unknown dangers that lurk outside the family’s walls. The Tragers also have some readjusting to do when Kyle comes back into their lives. After Kyle left, the family struggled to deal with the loss. Nicole (MacIntyre) became despondent and quit her job, Stephen (Thomas) has had to step up to take over for Nicole, Lori (Matson) can’t seem to figure out why Declan (Olivero) is so distant with her and Josh (Bilodeau) is up to his usual antics. Once Kyle returns, will the family be able to go back to normal or will his mysterious return leave some lingering issues? The peril increases for Kyle when a mysterious corporation, Madacorp, gets their hands on the girl in the pod (Alexander) and decides to put her on the hunt for Kyle. Not only does the girl become a part of his world, but she also seeps into the lives of the Tragers, putting everyone at risk. Can Kyle keep the threats away or will they come straight through the Trager’s front door? The ABC Television Studio series is created by Eric Bress & J. Mackye Gruber (“Butterfly Effect,” “Final Destination 2”). KYLE XY is executive produced by Chris Bender, J.C. Spink, Eric Tuchman and David Himelfarb. |

Richard Glatzer and Wash Westmoreland have also made a deal to turn "Quinceanera" into a TV series for the ABC Family Channel. They will direct, write and produce a series inspired by the film, a story of coming of age and culture clash in L.A.'s Echo Park.

Then there's the case of the bouncing "Notes From the Underbelly" scheduling. Confirmed just a week ago for the juicy post-"Grey's Anatomy" slot on Thursday nights, "Underbelly" now has yet another new home: Wednesdays at 8:30, behind "According to Jim."
"Underbelly" will still premiere in the Thursday 10 p.m. spot, with back-to-back episodes on April 12. But the show will then move to its regular Wednesday slot the following week on April 18. That's because the Alphabet web has been pleasantly surprised by "October Road," which performed well Thursday despite airing behind a "Grey's Anatomy" repeat. Rather than rock the boat, ABC will now bring "Road" back for its final two episodes on April 19 and 26. |

In other ABC news, "Men in Trees" reportedly will not return to the schedule before the season is out. It's understood the network will now hold the show's five yet-to-air episodes for next season where they will be amended to its 22-episode fall order (a la "Boston Legal's" 27-episode "second" season).
Originally slated to return on Thursday, April 12 at 10:00/9:00c, "Trees" was eventually supplanted by the premiere of "Notes from the Underbelly" on said night. "October Road" will then run on April 19 and 26 with an expanded "Grey's Anatomy" due on May 3. Programming for the slot on May 10 and 17, the last two Thursdays of the May sweeps period, has yet to be announced. But as always, upcoming schedules are subject to change. |

I think I'll cry if October Road doesn't get a second season. I know I'm probably speaking too soon, but will we know in May if it's getting a season 2? Isn't that when upfronts are? Or will it be later, because it was a midseason thing? I'm panicking. I'm all like afraid to get into this show only to have it taken away from me. ... ahh

We are all going to forget what we loved about Men In Trees. But I do love October Road. Give me a show about people and their lives anytime. I'm so tired of crime and reality.

I wonder if two shows were alike, would they face the possibility of NOT being granted another season? As, to be diverse in the television needs? Or is it more possible that if two shows are alike, say, for example, the Grey's spinoff, and Grey's, it might secure them together, as well as in a timeslot? ABC really has some great stuff right now. I just hope they don't screw it up. |

Although for a show like Traveler, which probably won't air until after the upfronts, they might wait and see how the ratings are... |

Just out of curiousity, azuline, from what you've seen, has a show ever had truly horrible ratings, and still survived? At least to be granted a 2nd season? I'm just worried about October Road, and it's basically based on what MA says. But he's a critic, you know? ... I shouldn't listen, right?

Well, WB/UPN of course renewed shows with horrible ratings, because of critical acclaim or devoted fans. Bigger networks do not have that sort of patience with shows, thus all the cancellations before the show even airs an entire season.
But as far as I know, October Road is getting good ratings and the network is happy about that. I think last year What About Brian had crappy ratings and everyone was surprised when ABC renewed it anyway... ABC released their season rankings and October Road was something like 42 out of 219 (all shows that have aired this season). It's ahead of shows like Brothers & Sisters, Boston Legal, Men In Trees, which were all renewed. Logically it would come back next season, but no one said networks did anything logical.
