Toynton deal is to develop, direct at 20th

Veteran TV director Ian Toynton has inked an overall deal with 20th Century Fox Television.

Under the mid-six-figure pact, which begins in May, Toynton will develop new projects for the studio. He also will direct episodes of 20th TV series as well as a pilot that might come out of his development.

20th TV president Gary Newman said execs were so impressed with Toynton's work on two Fox dramas -- the studio's "24" as well as on the Fox/Warner Bros. TV soap "The O.C." -- that they recruited him to direct 20th TV pilot "Supreme Courtships," a soapy comedic drama for Fox about the lives of Supreme Court clerks and the judges for whom they work.

"More than anything, it's his versatility as a director," Newman said. "He can go from doing a great job on a show full of action and intensity like '24' to a show with romance and humor."

Toynton most recently worked on "O.C." as director/co-executive producer and helmed the show's series finale, which aired Wednesday night.

He first got in business with 20th TV in 2003 when he was invited to direct for "24." The first episode Toynton helmed earned him an Emmy nomination. "It was a great start of the relationship," he said.

Before coming to the U.S., Toynton worked in television in his native England where, in addition to directing, he developed several projects. His deal with 20th TV marks his first stab at development on this side of the pond, something he had been thinking of doing for awhile.

"I have a really good working relationship with 20th Century Fox Television," he said. "It seemed like the ideal opportunity to go into a position where I can develop, and the timing seemed absolutely right."

Toynton, whose directing credits also include the NBC series "Crossing Jordan" and "Providence," is repped by Paradigm.

William Baldwin making "Money" on ABC

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - William Baldwin has joined ABC's drama pilot "Dirty Sexy Money."

The project centers on an idealistic young lawyer (Peter Krause) who gets to represent the Darlings, a rich and powerful family. Baldwin will play Patrick Darling, a senator with a wife and kids -- and skeletons in his closet.

Baldwin will next be seen in the indies "American Fork" and "Park," both slated to premiere at the HBO Comedy Arts Festival this week, and in "Adrift in Manhattan."

Natalie Zea (FX's "The Shield") was previously cast as Karen Darling, a thrice-married socialite who runs the family foundation. Also on board are Samaire Armstrong ("The O.C.") as Juliet Darling, a Paris Hilton-type heiress, and Zoe McLellan ("JAG") as the wife of Krause's character.

There's a video that I've never seen before of interviews with the whole cast. It's clearly the same day as the ones for fox.com, but definitely new interviews. I really like it. Hope you do too! (Sorry if its been posted before, but I've never come across it)

Philbin moves from 'O.C.' to NBC Uni

"The O.C." writer-producer Jennifer Philbin has inked an overall deal with NBC Universal TV Studio.

Under the two-year pact, Philbin will develop new projects for the studio and join existing NBC Uni TV series on the drama and the comedy side.

Philbin, known as JJ Philbin, has been a hot commodity this season because of her diverse background in sketch comedy (NBC's "Saturday Night Live," Fox's "Mad TV"), comedic drama ("Dead Like Me"), drama (ABC's "That Was Then") and teen soap ("The O.C.").

"JJ is brilliant and hilarious, and she writes across all genres," said Laura Lancaster, senior vp drama at NBC Uni TV.

Added the studio's senior vp comedy Shelley McCrory, "As half-hour comedies open up and become more sophisticated, JJ is someone we are extremely lucky to be in business with."


The deal marks Philbin's first crack at development, and she said she feels "very lucky" to be doing that with NBC Uni TV.

"They've developed some of the most exciting shows we've seen recently in comedy and drama," Philbin said. "They take risks, and most importantly, they tend to stick by them."

Philbin, the daughter of Regis Philbin, spent the past 3 1/2 years on "O.C.," rising through the ranks to supervising producer.

She is repped by UTA.

Eliza Dushku has been tapped to star in Fox's one-hour pilot "Nurses," Nikki Cox is set to star in CBS' comedy pilot "Fugly," and Amber Valletta will star in CBS' drama pilot "Twilight."

Additionally, Joshua Malina and Nia Long have landed lead roles on ABC's untitled Jon Feldman drama pilot, Autumn Reeser and David Walton have joined CW's untitled Tom Wheeler pilot, and Beverly D'Angelo has been added to CBS' drama pilot "Skip Tracer."...

The untitled Tom Wheeler project, from WBTV and Class IV Prods., centers on a brilliant graduate student (Ryan Devlin) and his friends, who use their skills to solve crimes. Reeser will play the Devlin character's down-to-earth girlfriend, a paralegal and the daughter of an FBI agent. Reeser (APA, Kritzer, Levine, Wilkins Entertainment) recently co-starred on "The O.C."
