Gossip Girl Spoilers and Speculation #15

The privileged prep school teens on Manhattan's Upper East Side first learn that Serena van der Woodsen (Blake Lively, "The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants") is back in town the way they learn all the important news in their lives -- from the blog of the allknowing albeit ultra-secretive Gossip Girl. No one knows Gossip Girl's identity, but everyone in this exclusive and complicated vicious circle relies on her website and text messages for the latest scoop. Even Serena's closest friend, Blair Waldorf (Leighton Meester, "Entourage"), is surprised to find that Serena has suddenly ended her selfimposed exile to boarding school and returned to Manhattan.

Once the Upper East Side's most notorious party girl, Serena's reasons for returning are mysterious, although they may have something to do with her younger brother Eric (Connor Paolo, "Alexander"). Whatever the reasons, the change in Serena is obvious, especially to Blair, whose friendship with Serena has always been competitive and difficult. When Serena was out of the picture, Blair enjoyed her time in the spotlight and she has no intention of going back to living in Serena's shadow. Their uneasy relationship is further complicated by Blair's boyfriend Nate (Chace Crawford, "The Covenant"), a young man uneasy with all the privileges that have been handed to him by his high-powered father Howie "The Captain" Archibald (Sam Robards, "The West Wing"). Now that Serena is back, Blair will have to fight to hold onto Nate's attention. It also remains to be seen whether Blair's loyal lieutenants -- Katy (newcomer Nan Zhang) and Isabel (newcomer Nicole Fiscella) -- will remain by her side or break ranks to follow Serena.

The tension between Blair and Serena isn't lost on anyone in this crowd, since they all live for gossip and scandal -- along with fashion, shopping and partying in Manhattan's trendiest hot spots. This is a world you have to be born into, full of wealth, power, and people like Chuck (Ed Westwick, "Children of Men"). A friend of Nate's since childhood, Chuck leads a reckless life, and constantly pushes Nate to explore his dark side.

The proverbial fish-out-of-water at the prep school are Dan (Penn Badgley, "John Tucker Must Die," "The Bedford Diaries") and his sister Jenny (Taylor Momsen, "Paranoid Park," "How The Grinch Stole Christmas"), middle-class kids whose background keeps them on the fringes of this exclusive clique. Dan and Jenny are attending the school at the insistence of their father Rufus (Matthew Settle, "Into The West"), a former rocker turned art gallery owner, determined to give his kids a first-class education. Rufus has a history with Serena's mother Lily (Kelly Rutherford, "Melrose Place"), a socialite who hides her past as a dancer and rock groupie. When a chance encounter brings Dan to Serena's attention, he suddenly finds himself dating the girl of his dreams. The more Dan discovers about the real Serena, the more he's challenged to make sense of her world. Dan's sister Jenny is the youngest of the group and wants desperately to be accepted. The price she'll have to pay for popularity will take a toll, but at the moment, Jenny is just thrilled to have entry into this glamorous world.

Dan and Serena's relationship is further complicated by the arrival of Dan's friend Vanessa, a Brooklyn rebel and loner who doesn't approve of Serena's world of money, fashion shows and fundraisers. Vanessa's attempts to pull him back to his roots will cause friction between Dan and Serena.

Keeping track of the shifting friendships, jealousies and turmoil in this wealthy and complex world isn't easy, but it's what Gossip Girl does best.

Blair (Leighton Meester) returns from abroad with a hot guy on her arm (guest star Patrick Heusinger), making a very jealous Chuck (Ed Westwick) question his decision to leave Blair stranded at the heliport. Dan has spent the summer assisting a famous author (guest star McInerney), but decides to head to the Hamptons to see how things stand with Serena after a summer spent apart. While interning for Eleanor Waldorf's company, Jenny (Taylor Momsen) sneaks an invite to a much-coveted Hamptons' White Party at which Eric (Connor Paolo) introduces her to socialite Tinsley Mortimer. Matthew Settle also stars. J. Miller Tobin directed the episode written by Joshua Safran (#201).

In the books, Dan has a bi-curious element, no? He has questioned his sexuality.
Badgley: Yeah, I think he’s straight-up gay in the books. But I don’t think network TV really has the balls to make one of their [teenage] series regulars gay. Let's say the show builds up to become a big hit, then I think they'd maybe explore it in year three or four. It would be an interesting thing to do. It could bring in a whole different demographic.

CHUCK: Girls, you don't know how thankful I am to have finally found a use for geometry in daily life.

Suddenly, sand is kicked in Chuck's face by a passing Serena. The girls immediatly brush it off him. Serena walking. As the beauties start to doff their bikini tops:

BRAZILIAN BEAUTY: Oh, Mr. Chuck, we can work on our tans here, yes?

CHUCK: (smiling) Oh yes.

Suddenly, Chuck's phone dings. He picks it up. We SEE it's a GOSSIP GIRL blast with a photo of Blair. Chuck reads it, and his face falls.

GG (voice over V.O.)
Spotted: Blair Waldorf at CDG, claiming her premiere space in L'Espace Premiere a whole week early. Now what could make Queen B abandon her two dads and come home une minute before Labor Day? I have a million questions, but I bet Chuck Bass is the answer to all of them...

BRAZILIAN BEAUTY: Mr. Chuck, is there something you need care taking of?

Chuck pockets his phone (all thoughts of Blair) with:

CHUCK: The only thing I need to take car of is you. And you... And you.

As the girls coo and titter, we find Serena, sitting a little furhter up the beath, staring out at the sea.

Also spotted: Serena van der Woodsen on Cooper's Beach, plus none. Despite rumors of an Archibald on her arm, it seems everyone's favorite (reformed) party girl is shockingly single and scandal-free.

SERENA (sminling) Yes. Hi.

SERENA: I'm flattered,really, but... I'ms or of seeing someone.

HOT LIFEGUARD: I'm sorry. I usually see you here alone.

SERENA: Right. Well... truth is, I used to be seeing someone. And even after spending the entire summer, here, alone, I'm not really ready to think about anyone else.

HOT LIFEGUARD: (nods) At least I gave it a shot.

SERENA: Yeah. And... and thanks.

As he leaves, leaving SErena alone tow atch the sunset...

GG (V.O.) Wonder what S will do when she finds out Lonely Boy's not so lonely anymore...?

...where he's almost run over by a Camaro that skids to a stop right in front of him. It is the Hot Lifeguard's Camaro, with Serena in the passenger seat.

HOT LIFEGUARD: Geezus!

In the harsh glare of the headlights Serena sees ____ clad only in his boxers, clothes balled up in his hands. He sees her see him and then... runs off into the night.

HOT LIFEGUARD: I coulda killed that guy. What the hell's his deal?

Spoilers have emerged from the first Hamptons-based episode of The CW's delicious teen soap "Gossip Girl" which kicks off its sophomore year on September 1. The episode featuring a shirtless shot of Chace Crawford's character Nate in his underwear will be filled with steamy, but secretive summer sex.

Nate turns into a boy toy as he begins a secret affair with a married older woman named Catherine Mason. But as the couple get together for yet another hot appointment of afternoon sex, Catherine panics at the sound of her huisband's car pulling into driveway.

Meanwhile, Dan (Penn Badgley) gets a little make-out action of his own as he seduces a beautiful girl at the library where he assists Sebastian Harris, a man described by the writers as a "literary lion." But the apprenticeship comes to an abrupt end, when Dan lets Sebastian down.
