The buzz on 5.9 "Real Ghostbusters"
This is a conversation I joined on the Supernatural newsgroup. Some of the folks there are upset that we keep seeing these whimsical "meta" eps, instead of better progressing the season's arc. Personally, I think they probably should be doing more regarding the arc, but I'm cool with the meta stuff being intertwined (preferable in the same ep, as they did last week).
Here are the comments: DJensen wrote: The parodies were funny and all, but I've had more than enough of this meta humour on Supernatural. How about some mid-season episodes where the plot actually advances, instead of this holding pattern nonsense? I just saw the preview for next week. More meta. A Supernatural (the book series!) fan convention, with the return of "Becky" (who is completely unrecognizable from her Ginger Snaps days, holy rhinoplasty) the superfan, jokes about homoeroticism, and awkward confrontations with fans dressed like Sam and Dean. Ugh. As someone who has gone to a SN convention, I'd love to see that - bet they skewer the psychos very well. Might even take a dig at smartasses, like me. DJensen: I hope Kripke doesn't stay for season 6, I'd like to see someone with ideas calling the shots. WTF? I probably won't watch if he's *not* at the helm. Natalie

Random thoughts typed in real time:
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Oh dear - they're about to skewer we fans again. Cool. How sad is it that I met Becky at a con? Not just a Supernatural one, either. Noooo don't go in there! Wow, Jensen's really let himself go since getting engaged. Better lay off those cheeseburgers. First ever Supernatural convention - um no. Look at that tiny crowd - that might be what ya get for a really expensive "breakfast with the stars" (*hork*) Wait - So his pen name is something other than Chuck. That excessive drinking reminds me of Padalecki with his coffee - that guy can chug it, people. LOL hook man! A German one! LOL there were lots of Europeans at the one I attended. Oh for crap's sake - they're only up to S3?! Why would a nutty fan like Becky not already be hitting on Chuck? She'd be his sex slave - be serious here, people. Chuck created what is pretty much her entire life. I smell RPG.... ...yup. Gawd, that guy has a horrible wig on. Sam you *know* better than to say "this couldn't get any weirder" - *fwap* OK, in defense of Supernatural fans, I have never seen anyone act quite that dorky with RPG - granted, I haven't seen a lot of RPG. Not a judgment; just not my thing. Ah, so the little girl dressed as a maid thought she saw a faux ghost, but saw the real thing. Is this a marketing ploy by Warner Bros. and Creation Entertainment, to pump up con ticket sales? :-P I know that fat guy with the beard from somewhere - I'll have to IMDB later. I always try to suspend my disbelief, but where in the hell did Sam & Dean get money? They can't possibly be doing credit cards scams for this long - they'd be the most wanted guys in the country. No fixed address, no employment? The only thing they could do would be steal other folks' cards, since the angels are doing less than nothing to help them. Both of those nerds are trying to play Dean? How...irritating. "Ya think, Sammy?" WTF? Since when does Sam growl? Whatta coupla maroons. I've wanted to crack my kids' heads open at times (especially when they're in their teens), but since I'm sane, thought it unwise. Yes, Dean - they *are* freaking annoying - DO IT. No, you can't be Dean - you can be Sam *and* Dean, you pompous twit. Now they think *Dean* is the psycho. I want these "fans" to die bloodier than "Paris". Why would anyone pretend to be Sam & Dean? Because tragic heroes have always been attractive. Especially to women. Lookit those "hunters" show their true mettle. LOL Getting drunk - yeah, that always helps. But most of the fans I saw couldn't drink - at least not legally. Oops - wasted the wrong ghost. Better run, Fritz. I'm so proud of myself for knowing what "Gott im Himmel" means - God in Heaven. You may cease your applause, now. Bad enough the poor girl works at "Hooters", but in Toledo?! Isn't that a level of hell? The actress ain't using an Ohio accent; it's Canadian. What a shock on this show, filmed in Vancouver. Alright! iPod to the rescue! Oh yeah - corporeal ghosts - seen only (as far as I know) on Supernatural. *sigh* Poor Chuck - bet they think it's special effects. NOW Becky wants him? SHEESH. It's official - she's a moron. NO, don't cut Sam's hair! Go for those mutton chops! Damn, they're still there. Was it just me, or did this ep seem to have an awful lot of commercials? I know SN is catching fire, so I guess more ads are to be expected. Let's hear it for DVR! OH gawd, Wincest! (hork-a-thon here) This twit thinks she had a chance with Sam? Can you say delusional? LOL Chuck: "It's really not jumping the shark if you never come back down" - sounds like DJensen and Brian on the NG An entertaining ep, but in my experience RPG certainly isn't the main thing one does at fan conventions - that would more commonly be folks spending buckets of cash on items related to the show/movie/whatever, as well as taking an obscene amount of photos. I dropped a little over $2,000 (ticket, hotel, airfare, etc) at the LA con, not including being robbed to the tune of about $3,500 in addition to that (the stolen money was returned, but not the stolen iPod) Next week's looks like it's not going to be another funfest. Holy mother of crap! That was freaking hilarious. I can’t help it. I love a show that pokes fun at its fans and the fans don’t mind. I loved Monster at the End of This Book for the exact same reason. I’m sure it’s no coincidence this aired the same weekend the Chicago convention is going on. Having never been to a convention myself, I can only guess at what they might be like by all the accounts I’ve read and the youtube videos I’ve seen. I do have to wonder exactly how many over the top fans like Becky there are out there. I mean, I consider myself a pretty huge fan but I can’t imagine embarrassing myself the way Becky did. I’m sorry but she just annoys me. I’m not saying she’s not funny sometimes but she is certainly annoying.
There were so many funny parts to this. I loved that the guy who complained about everything got ganked by the creepy kids. I’m sure Kripke and crew have felt like killing a few complaining fans before. I think I actually read something one time about a fan asking why Dean and Sam’s weapons always get knocked out of their hands. I loved how they were going to discuss the homo erotic sub text to Supernatural. Shout out to all the slash fans once again. Not my cup of tea, but hey, whatever floats your boat. And I had to love the fact that the two guys met online in a SPN chat room seeing as how I’ve met some awesome people online because of SPN. This was a great episode in so many ways. I love the fact that Sam and Dean were hunting ghosts. It had absolutely nothing to do with the apocalypse. It showed that they are once again the team they used to be. They’ve obviously been working on their relationship very hard. If Dean has any trust issues anymore, they have to be very few. Sam is proving himself time and time again. And it’s a good thing they are working these things out because it’s going to get dark again very soon and they are going to need each other like never before. I loved how Dean just didn’t understand the appeal of his and Sam’s life. “I think that the Dean and Sam story sucks. It is not fun. It’s not entertaining. It is a river of crap that would send most people howling to the nuthouse.” I beg to differ, Dean. It may not be fun for you but it’s an awesome ride for us. Although I do agree about the “howling to the nuthouse” part. I’ve wondered time and again how those boys haven’t had permanent mental breakdowns. I think Dean finally understands the fan fascination in the end when Damien explains to him what the story is really about (and he also explains why we love it so much): “To be Sam and Dean, to wake up every morning and save the world, to have a brother who would die for you. Well, who wouldn’t want that?” Surely Dean had to see they make a difference in people’s lives (and not just the ones they save). Barnes and Damien wanted to help save people because that’s what Sam and Dean would do. I think that’s also a testament to the fans and how much the show influences our lives. I know that personally SPN has had a huge impact on my life. I won’t go into all the details of that because it would be too big of a chick flick moment but I think Kripke and company know how much this show means to loyal fans. That’s why I trust whatever he does as far as this show is concerned. After all, it is his baby, not ours. We just get to enjoy the ride. My only real gripe is it was a little too convenient how they found out about the Colt. I thought for sure Castiel would track it down since he’d heard whispers about the Colt. Surely, Cas has read the Winchester gospels? Gasp! I guess not or he would have known where to start looking. Random thoughts: I loved Chuck saving the day with the “bionic” music playing. ![]() Dean to Sam: “Just give her the puppy dog thing.” Yep, that would work with me. Sam to Chuck on whether it was okay to publish more books: “No, not really. We have guns and we’ll find you.” Loved the sappy music that was playing when Becky broke it off with Sam. *smirk* Fake Dean to fake Sam when he stated the obvious: “Gee, you think Sammy?” Real Dean to real Sam when he stated the obvious: “Gee, you think Sammy?” Where the heck is Dean’s ring and bracelet? That’s bugging me more than Sam’s bracelet. I can come up with a plausible reason for Sam’s being gone but not Dean’s. Funniest line of the night: “Like a monkey on the sun it was too hot to live.” Previews for next week: OMG! I’ve been waiting anxiously for this episode ever since the first spoilers leaked. Is it Thursday yet??? |

Those guys on the newsgroup seem to want a lot more sturm und drang, but I think dark themes are better with at least some humor. Too much angst is exhausting; at least for me.
Having said that - we do seem to be getting rather wide of the arc lately. Natalie
