Obituary for 'The O.C.'
A promising successor to "Beverly Hills: 90210," "The O.C." debuted Aug. 5, 2003, on Fox with much fanfare. During its first season, the show catapulted its stars to tabloid status, helped indie bands like Death Cab for Cutie get overplayed and turned lines like, "Welcome to the O.C., bitch. This is how it's done in Orange County," into instant catchphrases. The show left no soapy plot gimmick unused, providing endless drinking-game possibilities and probably helping to breed a whole new generation of alcoholics. Almost all the characters in the show were related and yet sleeping with one another at the same time. There were pregnancy scares, porn scandals and attempted murders – often in a single episode. The characters' closets full of skeletons assured us that the rich and glamorous were just like the rest of us: trashy and depressed.
