I just read the first book and there wasnt a character named Tara Thornton. I dont think she will pop up on other books and became Sookie's best friend so Did they created her for True Blood?
I'm glad she in the show thought, without her, there is no way we can understand what Sookie is thinking just watching the show

To answer eowyn36's question, Tara Thornton is a character in the books - she first appears in the second book "Living Dead in Dallas" and recurs throughout the series. In the books, she's white and is owns and runs her own fashion boutique in Bon Temps and she's Sookie's friend from when they were kids. In the later books, they're close friends but not BEST friends like they are on the show. However, the show version of Tara and the book version of Tara both share the same backstory - they had alcoholic mothers who beat them and abused them and that inspired them to be different.
OK, to initiate the book discussion: What's everyone's favorite of the books so far? Mine would have to be book seven, "All Together Dead." It was the most exciting one in the series, in my opinion, with a ton of action, suspense, plot twists, romance, and fantastic characters. Plus, we got to see more of Queen Sophie-Anne which is always a plus in my book.

As someone who never read any of the books, here is my question: if I read them, is it going to negatively impact my enjoyment of the series? Right now, everything is a surprise to me. But I wonder if I'm missing anything by not being familiar with the books...

There are some differences in the books from the show. But I find that I have read the books and enjoy the series. I think more because of the fact of the differences. There are twists and turns and when you think one thing may happen but it doesn't. You are left wondering.. I'll take the example of Bill killing long shadow in the show and then having to make Jessica.. In the book it wasn't Bill and there was no Jessica.. I feel that the books give some different points that when you watch the show. It gets you thinking more.. I would say read them you won't regret it..

I have read all the books and am waiting for the next one to come out. They were great. I have been enjoying the fact that the series steered away from the books because then there is that bit of surprise. You don't know what they will do next.
I like Tara better in the TV show than in the books. Her character in the TV show has more depth and I love her sassy-ness |

I loved the books. The are very well written. Don't start reading them unless you have some time because they are addicting and you will want to read them all in one sitting. I do agree on Tara's character. I prefer her in the TV series to her character in the book. I can't wait until they bring Quinn into the show. He's one of my favorite characters.

I like the books much better than the series. I don't think the series is bad, but if someone said: You can only read or only watch the Sookie chronicles, I'd chose the books.
Personally, I think they make more sense. I think the series goes for what might be more visually attractive and what the majority of viewers will like. The books are what they are. I think Ms. Harris writes what she wants to write. She doesn't have to worry about ratings, and her books sell. Therefore, I prefer the books. |

I am on book 2 and also was surprised that (so far) there was no character named Tara, Sookie's best friend. I have also been surprised about some of the other differences such as 2 sheriff's, Bill telliing Sookie he could fly but not all could. How each Vampire has there own special "powers". The biggest of all Lafayette getting killed. That one shocked me.
