I believe that, at this point, if they removed Rob, the series would see a downfall in sales. It is a given that a major character usually can't be replaced with a lot of uproar. (As opposed to a semi-major character like Dumbles in HP, when Richard Harris died... which, by the way, I'm very sad about. He was a much better Dumbles. But we got over the replacement.)
However, if someone else played Edward from the get-go, no one would care. Actually... I remember people speculating much better/hotter heart-throbs than Rob before the official Twilight actors were announced. Robert came somewhere the heck out of left field. If anything, Twilight made Robert P. Seriously. Anyone tell me a role he played besides Cedric Diggory that you SAW and remember him from BEFORE Twilight? It's because people obviously think of Edward when they think of him. "They" being the rabid, scary fangirls. |

I don't think it mattered who they casted as Edward - if it had been someone different that actor would be how Robert Pattinson is now. Don't get me wrong, Rob is HOT, but I think a lot of people love him because they love Edward.
