John Popper And The Duskray Troubadours Concert Review: Hit The Right Chord John Popper And The Duskray Troubadours Concert Review: Hit The Right Chord

"I'm dressed like the guy from Blues Traveler, but this isn't Blues Traveler." John Popper was right. No it wasn't. It was John Popper and the Duskray Troubadours hitting the cozy confines of The Independent in San Francisco. It seems that all of the Traveler fans are loyal to Popper. The club was near capacity as the band hit the stage. "To come to a rock show on a Monday night. That's excellent," Popper said as he launched into his first number.

The Troubadours are best described as a mix of rock and blues. Popper's unique voice and undeniable talent on harmonica add a different dimension to each song. Although, many fans still just want to hear "Run-Around," the new music was received well. "This is the sixth time we've played these songs live," Popper said. It's clear the band is enjoying their time on stage and Popper is enjoying the new material.

Popper can easily be described as a road warrior. Not only because of his highly publicized fascination with weapons, but also because of the ridiculous schedule he's kept. Often touring with Blues Traveler for 300 days a year. This is an artist that could easily phone it in, collect his paycheck and leave. But Popper seemed genuinely happy in the middle of long harmonica solos. He also had no problems striking up conversations with the audience.

The first album form the Troubadours is due to be out this month. It won't hit mainstream radio and Popper may be on to a new project soon. Whatever the case may be it's good music. Something fans have come to expect from the harmonica virtuoso. As smoke quickly filled the small club and the catchy chords to "Something Sweet," were struck, it felt like Popper was in his zone as he wailed on the harp. Small clubs suit Popper and this music suits small clubs. It was the perfect combination and the Duskray Troubadours definitely hit the right chord.
