2nd Annual Golf and Guitars
The 2nd annual Golf and Guitars charity event, held at Haggin Oaks golf course in Sacramento CA, brought country fans and the industries superstars together for a good cause. 13 artists performed acoustically on the small stage on the course, after a long day of golfing with fans. The concert was done Grand Ole Opry style, which gave each of the artists about 15 minutes to perform a few songs for the hundreds of fans in attendance.
The day's activities got started early with all the artists taking part in the golf tournament. Eighteen holes in the sweltering Northern California heat made the night time performances a little difficult for some of the artists.
"This is just downright mean to make us do that and than perform," joked Eddie Bush backstage. Bush, a member of One Flew South, split his time between tuning his guitar and proudly showing the other artists a book that one of his students had made for him. Bush teaches guitar lessons when he's not on the road and one of his eight year old students had presented him with the home made book. Bush now keeps it in his guitar case. OFS did make it onto the stage and put on a great show. Much of the band's music is played acoustically so the songs were immediately recognizable as all of them sounded like the radio versions. Included in the short set was the new single "Life."
This charity event was very unique and really did what it advertised. All the country stars were accessible and most of them could be found mingling with the crowd and watching the show. Backstage it was one big reunion as all the artists sat down together. Some of them with guitars in hand others eating dinner, all talking about life on the road. It seemed Chuck Wicks was having the most fun, wandering around the event. Anyone that approached Wicks was met with an outstretched hand and a simple introduction "Hi, I'm Chuck," as if they didn't know. Wicks signed autographs for hours but managed to make it on stage for his allotted 15 minutes. The country star, who had just recently left Dancing With The Stars, got the audience on their feet with the smash single "Stealing Cinderella." After the set Wicks was back in the audience laughing and signing once again.
Bucky Covington was the night's head liner, but when John Michael Montgomery arrived without a band or his guitar he ended up joining Covington on stage. Before the set Montgomery walked up to Bucky saying "I don't have a band or a guitar can you help me out."
Covington smiled and responded " I think I have those things." The two covered Elvis, played each others hits and had an all around great time on stage. Mid set Covington broke three strings on his own guitar which sent member of Love and Theft Eric Gunderson sprinting backstage. He handed Covington his guitar and the set proceeded. Montgomery, who had a drink in hand the entire night, laughed when he forgot most of the words to his own song "Be My Baby Tonight." The vocals were taken over by the audience, Montgomery turned to Covington and said "Isn't great when you get to the point in your career that an audience can sing the song when you forget the words." The set drew to a close with "I Swear."
The whole day was a huge success as Haggin Oaks had not only made the fans happy but also raised a lot of money for charity. Chris Young, Trent Tomlinson, Jypsi, Steve Holy and Jamie O'Neal also provided great music. Hopefully this event will continue for years to come.
