A sell out crowd flooded into AT&T Park as the San Francisco Giants took on the Arizona Diamondbacks. Although the Giants are in the midst of a playoff run, and every game counts, the fans were there for the pre-game festivities. It was Latino Heritage night at the stadium and Bay Area legend Carlos Santana was on hand to throw out the first pitch.
This promotion, among many others the Giants have every season, is a great way to reach out to the diverse community that they reside in. Linda Ronstadt also joined Santana on the field before game time to present a check to a local charity. Before the pre-game ceremonies Santana took time to do a few interviews, sign some autographs and have a conversation with famed Giants pitcher Barry Zito. The two superstars sat in the dugout nonchalantly and talked about everything from music to baseball. Photographers quickly circled around the two celebrities and the laid back atmospheres dissipated.
The mood was relaxed as Santana made his way around the field. A local band was performing before game time as well and Santana had fun with the kids, signing guitars and giving them advice. As game time drew closer the legend made his way to the mound for the first pitch. Giants relief pitcher Sergio Romo served as the catcher and was thrilled to have the opportunity to shake the rock star's hand. "It's great when celebrities come out here and we get to meet them," said Romo. Many of the Giants players were paying close attention to Santana, showing that even professional athletes can be star struck.
The Giants also distributed a one of a kind bobble head that features Santana in a Giants uniform. The prized bobble heads were given out to only a handful of the first fans that hit the turnstiles. The collectible quickly became a hot commodity and Santana himself said he didn't even get one as he wanted as many fans as possible to be happy. Although the Giants have no problem filling their beautiful stadium to capacity on a nightly basis they continue to put on events such as these. The night was capped off by a Giants win that sent the crowd home happy, indeed.
