Interview: Charlie Daniels
The legendary Charlie Daniels has been playing music for the better part of fifty years. His smash hit "The Devil Went Down to Georgia," is still in the rotation of country radio stations and fans are still flocking to see the legend in action. He's currently touring the county fair circuit and we caught up with him and spoke about everything from what it was like recording with Bob Dylan to his political views.
Do you enjoy playing the county fair circuit?
Charlie Daniels: I love the county fair circuit. People will come see you that will not actually go through the pain of coming to see you at a regular concert because it will be sometimes a lot of trouble to come to a regular concert somewhere. They'll come to a fair with the whole family and I like having the whole family.
When you started as a session musician was it your ultimate goal to be on stage?
Charlie Daniels: Well, I was no stranger to being on stage. In fact, I had been on stage a lot more than I had been in a recording studio, that's where I cut my teeth, on stage. I had gone to Nashville and being a recording musician was something I had very little experience at. I went in and did it for a couple years but I'm not the best recording musician around because I'm more into playing my stuff. So, I enjoy it, it's fun but I'm gonna stick to what I'm doing now.
What was it like recording with Bob Dylan and touring with Leonard Cohen?
Charlie Daniels: Wonderful, man. I learned a lot from people like that. I learned a lot from Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen and being exposed to a variety of people and, especially, talent of that caliber pretty early in my career was a big thing to me. It meant doing something that a lot of people don't get to do. It was a great experience.
Between all the awards you've won and albums you've sold does anything get you pumped up anymore?
Charlie Daniels: Son, I get pumped up every time I walk on stage and when I get to where I don't I'll quit. I mean that's the reason I'm doing this basically, because I love what I do. I thoroughly enjoy being a musician and entertaining people. It's a night after night process to me that I'm able to walk on stage and entertain people that's why I did this. I love what I do.
