Neimo

Neimo
Biography:

The sound of the Parisian underground has reached our shores once again and is about to nestle it's refined yet raw rock and roll self amongst our own indie scene.

Neimo offer their unique sonic sphere accompanying Bruno's husky and melodic vocals, the guitar morphs under electronic impulses - and it's impossible to not capture your attention. Catchy, effective pop and arrogant, sensual rock come together with a resolutely Anglo-Saxon benediction. Neimo's main goal is to stick to the essentials. Their compositions get right to the point: the song. Simplicity and success go hand in hand, which is why the group has met with growing success for the past two years on the underground and mainstream scenes, charming its fans in nightclubs and festivals.

To bottle up their onstage energy, the arrangements, guitar solos and clever references sprinkled here, their debut album, "From Scratch", was the perfect introduction and taster towards what this band is really capable of. Neimo is a group with high standards. This is also why the boys created their own label, Big Fields, to ensure the freedom of the group in terms of their music and approach in France.

Now with their second album "Modern Incidental" set for release next spring and after signing to US based Shangri-La Music, the new music company headed by Jeff Ayeroff (co-founder and former CEO of Virgin US, and more recently Vice Chairman of Warner Records), the lads are now ready to revolutionize and refresh rock and roll.

You've heard the buzz, now you must be part of this refreshing Parisian rock and roll movement about to hit embark Stateside. Vive la Revolution, indeed!

Neimo pronounced Nay-mo (not to be confused with Disney), formed in Paris, France in 2003. The original lineup included Bruno Dallesandro as lead vocalist, Camille Troillard on guitars and Matthieu Joly on a Synth Bass; they all had met in high school and had even formed a cover band during that time. Playing in underground clubs/bars namely Odeon, Pulp and Bar III, with the aide of a drum machine, they quickly realized that they would get further with a more organic sound; this is when they added Alexis Hadefi, drummer, in 2005.

Neimo didn't gain widespread popularity immediately; most of the French radio stations wouldn't even give them air play simply because their music was in English. A few stations, namely Oui FM and France Inter did play their single 'Hot Girl' though, and so they set off to tour Europe and gain a huge fanbase.

Neimo's debut album, "From Scratch," was released in 2005 under their own label, Big Fields. Their EP, "Neimo" released in 2007, gives us a taste of what is yet to come in their second full length album, "Modern Incidental;" it is said to be released in the Spring of 2008. In 2007 the band was also signed to Shangri-La Music, a label started by Jeff Ayeroff (from Virgin US) and the Vice Chairman of Warner Records.

I was fortunate enough to attend two of the Neimo shows here in New York. The first show I went to was at Pianos where Neimo had a residency for a month. Although Pianos is a small bar type venue, by the time the show began the place was packed. Immediately upon entering, Matthieu yelled out my name and beckoned me to come sit with them. The set list was then decided over burgers, beers and fries, just ten minutes before the show, with Alexis admitting that the food was "disgustingly unhealthy." Two of the songs performed were single 'Hot Girl' and upbeat dance track 'Echoing Pixels.' While Bruno shimmies to the music, Cam rocks out on his guitar, Alexis holds the beat with the nodding of his head, and Matthieu dances as he plays the keys, it is easy to see why they became so popular so fast; simply, their performances are electrifying.

The second show I attended was at Luna Lounge in Brooklyn, where they would be taping the whole performance. Although there was a band before them, as well as two after them, it was clear who everyone was here to see. As soon as Neimo got on stage, a huge mass of people surrounded them, ready to dance and sing along to the music. The set was once again amazing, and looking around I could tell the crowd fully enjoyed it too. In the middle of a song Bruno's mic stopped working, however he simply smiled and stepped over to share Cam's mic with him, without missing a beat. The performance was awesome and the crowd didn't seem to mind Neimo having to redo two of their songs for the taping.

Neimo's influences include The Smiths, Blondie, The Strokes,The Stooges, David Bowie, The Kinks and New Order. Neimo has tourned with Grand National and Vive La Fete. They have also opened up for Massive Attack, Grand National and The Infadels.

Neimo will be appearing at SXSW in 2008.
