Joss Whedon Has Strong, Mixed Emotions To Buffy Movie

Buffy fans aren’t going to be happy with this news. Warner Brothers announced today that they will be moving forward with a Buffy The Vampire Slayer reboot, but the project will not have any involvement from Joss Whedon, the man who helped to make the original series an iconic piece of television history. As of right now, none of the original cast or creative team will be involved in the project. Whit Anderson is set to write the script.

E! Online checked in with Joss Whedon to get his response via email and here’s what he had to say.

This is a sad, sad reflection on our times, when people must feed off the carcasses of beloved stories from their youths – just because they can’t think of an original idea of their own, like I did with my Avengers idea that I made up myself.

Obviously I have strong, mixed emotions about something like this. My first reaction upon hearing who was writing it was, “Whit Stillman AND Wes Anderson? This is gonna be the most sardonically adorable movie EVER.”

Apparently I was misinformed. Then I thought, “I’ll make a mint! This is worth more than all my Toy Story residuals combined!” Apparently I am seldom informed of anything. And possibly a little slow. But seriously, are vampires even popular any more?

I always hoped that Buffy would live on even after my death. But, you know, AFTER. I don’t love the idea of my creation in other hands, but I’m also well aware that many more hands than mine went into making that show what it was. And there is no legal grounds for doing anything other than sighing audibly. I can’t wish people who are passionate about my little myth ill. I can, however, take this time to announce that I’m making a Batman movie. Because there’s a franchise that truly needs updating. So look for The Dark Knight Rises Way Earlier Than That Other One And Also More Cheaply And In Toronto, rebooting into a theater near you.

Leave me to my pain! Sincerely, Joss Whedon.

Joss certainly handles it with class and humor. Though we couldn’t expect anything less from him. What’s your thoughts on the reboot minus Whedon? Sound off in the comments below!

  1. Do they have to call it Buffy? With no involvement from anyone (actors or Joss), they could call it anything. I guess they hope if they attach Buffy to the title, people will want to see it. Problem is, this fanbase is not that dumb.

  2. But seriously, are vampires even popular any more? I agree with him on this statement too, zombies are taking the rise over vampires. They’re still popular, but look at this year versus last year. This year, one of the most popular games, Call Of Duty: Black Ops, is set in a zombie apocalypse; the new show The Walking Dead, is high on ratings…vampires are still popular, bu they’re starting to ring in second to zombies again. Now for Buffy…no Joss Wheaton, no Sarah Michelle Gellar? Count me out 🙁 I wasn’t a fan of the first movie, only the series.

  3. I think we’re getting overwhelmed with vampires honestly. It seems when Hollywood finds something that works – they overdo it until they run it into the ground. Twilight worked – so we got True Blood – So we got Vampire Diaries – so now we are getting more Vampire movies – so now let’s reboot Buffy. I also think it’s too soon to reboot Buffy, let a little more time pass so it can be a true tribute. And then get as many of the originals back involved as you can. I think the majority of Buffy fans are going to be against this.

  4. I agree. To me, Sarah Michelle Gellar is Buffy, and if Cordelia, Spike, Xander, and Willow aren’t polayed by proper character, you can count this Buffy fan out!

  5. Wrooooooooong! Without Joss, you know they’re gonna chew it up and spit it out starring Miley Cyrus as Buffy and Justin Bieber as Angel. No one wants to see that!
