Mike Myers: Why I Decided To Be Shrek

Shrek has evolved from movie to franchise, but the film almost had to seek out another voice in the beginning!

When Mike Myers was initially offered the role of the big green ogre by DreamWorks Animation honcho Jeffrey Katzenberg, he admits he wasn’t completely sold—on the movie’s title.

“I was like, Shrek. Can you change the name?” the comedic actor recalls asking Katzenberg in this exclusive behind-the-scenes clip featured on the Shrek Forever After DVD/Blu-ray out Dec. 7. “He goes, ‘No, we’re quite confident.’ ”

“He [Katzenberg] told me the message of the film, which is that you’re already beautiful, don’t let other people tell you you’re not,” Myers says. “And I thought, when I have grandkids, that’s the sort of well-told, silly, fun fairy tale I want to take them to.”

That, and having them hear grandpa opposite the likes of Eddie Murphy, Cameron Diaz and John Lithgow, was what sold him on the idea. When told who his costars would be, Myers recalls saying, ‘Well, then I’m in.’ ”

  1. Chris Farley was originally cast as Shrek and even recorded part of the dialogue but it had to be recast due to his death. I always wonder how it would have turned out if he had completed it.

  2. That would have been interesting to see how that would have worked. I definitely see as how he would have been great voicing that role.

  3. Chris Farley R.I.P Was a funny & energetic person so Ya that would of been something to see. Mike Myers is doing an excellent job playing Shrek so far 😀
