Theatrical Releases for May 11th: ‘Dark Shadows’ Hits Theaters

A Bag of Hammers (NR), Comedy – Two slackers run a valet-parking scam to steal cars, but their operation is threatened when a stressed-out single mom and her street-smart young son move in next door. Stars Jason Ritter, Jake Sandvig, and Rebecca Hall.

Changing the Game (NR), Action – An intelligent young African-American man rises from the oppressive streets of North Philadelphia to become a shining star at Wall Street’s most prestigious firm. However, he soon finds that the white-collar world is filled with crime and death just like the streets he left behind. Stars Tony Todd, Sticky Fingaz, and Irma P. Hall.

Dangerous Ishhq (NR), Thriller – Supermodel Sanjana and Rohan, son of one of the nation’s foremost business tycoons, are one of the most popular couples on the social circuit. When Rohan is kidnapped, Sanjana must rescue her love and expose his true captors. Stars Karisma Kapoor.

Dark Shadows (PG-13), Fantasy – Barnabas Collins has the world at his feet until he makes the grave mistake of breaking the heart of a witch who dooms him to a fate worse than death: turning him into a vampire, and then burying him alive. Two centuries later, Barnabas is inadvertently freed from his tomb and emerges into the very changed world of 1972. He finds that his once-grand estate has fallen into ruin. The dysfunctional remnants of the Collins family have fared little better, each harboring their own dark secrets. Stars Johnny Depp, Jackie Earl Haley, and Bella Heathcote.

Girl in Progress (PG-13), Comedy – Grace is a single mom too busy juggling work, bills, and the very married Dr. Hartford to give her daughter the attention she desperately needs. When her daughter’s English teacher introduces her students to classic coming-of-age stories she is inspired to skip adolescence and jump-start her life without mom. Stars Eva Mendes, Patricia Arquette, and Matthew Modine.

God Bless America (R), Comedy – Frank has had enough of the downward spiral of American culture, which he sees as overrun with cruelty, stupidity and intolerance. Divorced, recently fired, and possibly terminally ill, Frank truly has nothing left to live for. But instead of taking his own life, he buys a gun and decides to take out his frustration on the cruelest, stupidest, most intolerant people he can imagines tarting with some particularly odious reality television stars. Frank finds an unusual accomplice in a high-school student who shares his sense of rage and disenfranchisement, and together they embark on a nation-wide assault on our country’s dumbest, most irritating celebrities. Hick (R), Drama – The story is about a 13-year-old who runs away to Las Vegas after being abandoned by her parents in Nebraska. Along the way, the girl learns some truths about American society and the peril of her own sexual curiosity. Stars Chloe Moretz, Eddie Redmayne, and Juliette Lewis.

I Wish (NR), Drama – Twelve-year-old Koichi lives with his mother and retired grandparents in Kagoshima, in the southern region of Kyushu, Japan. His younger brother Ryunosuke lives with their father in Hakata, northern Kyushu. The brothers have been separated by their parents’ divorce and Koichi’s only wish is for his family to be reunited. When he learns that a new bullet train line will soon open, linking the two towns, he starts to believe that a miracle will take place the moment these new trains first pass each other at top speed. With help from the adults around him, Koichi sets out on a journey with a group of friends, each hoping to witness a miracle that will improve their difficult lives.

Nesting (PG-13), Comedy – Neil and Sarah are in that uneasy transition from hipster to yuppie, and they’re asking themselves that universal question of all thirty-something married couples: How The Hell Did That Happen? In an effort to rekindle their relationship, they set out on a trip that lands them back in their old neighborhood, in a trendy section of Los Angeles. A few drinks bring back a few memories, and Neil and Sarah end up breaking into the apartment they used to share, and squatting illegally for a few days in their twenty-something lives. After throwing a raging “housewarming” party, Neil and Sarah must rely on their grown-up resources to avoid some serious consequences. Stars Todd Grinnell, Ali Hillis, and Kevin Linehan.

Otter 501 (G), Documentary – A storm grows, a sea otter pup is separated from her mother, and a young woman bound for adventure blows in to town. On a wild, windswept beach these lives collide and an entire species’ survival gets personal. Through Katie’s eyes you will see our playful pup, otter number 501, get an amazing second chance at life in the wild. As the two learn to navigate the opportunities and risks of life without anchor we see the incredible efforts people have undertaken to return sea otters from the brink of existence. Framed against the strikingly beautiful Monterey Bay coastline, the last stronghold of these iconic animals, Katie discovers just how serious this threat remains.

Sleepless Night (NR), Thriller – Vincent is a well-respected cop, as well as a devoted husband and father. But below the surface of his idyllic life, Vincent is involved with a very dangerous group of gangsters and drug dealers. When Vincent and his partner are caught stealing a massive quantity of cocaine from a powerful drug lord, the darker side of Vincent’s life threatens to destroy his family and career. In a race against the clock, Vincent must return the drugs in order to save his son’s life. Stars Tomer Sisley, Serge Riaboukine, and Joey Starr.

Stash House (R), Suspense – A couple find the perfect starter home. Upon moving in, a group of dangerous men arrive who will stop at nothing to get what’s locked inside the couple’s house. Stars Dolph Lundgren, Briana Evigan, and Sean Faris.

The Cup (NR), Drama – Born into a legendary racing family, jockeys Damien Oliver and his brother were destined for greatness. However, tragedy strikes when his brother is in a deathly riding accident just days before the prestigious Melbourne Cup race. Damien considers bowing out of the race and wonders if he’ll ever ride again, but with the encouragement of famed Irish horse trainer Dermot Weld he realizes that racing is the one way he can pay tribute to the memory of his beloved brother. In a moment that captured the attention and the hearts of the world, Damien and his horse Media Puzzle victoriously cross the finish line at the Melbourne Cup.   1. I really want to see DARK SHADOWS, but am expecting to be utterly disappointed. I already read all of the predictions saying AVENGERS will stomp all over it, but I’ll be seeing it eventually. As a fan of the original, I think it will be bothersome. But, Tim Burton is usually visually stunning (even if the content leaves a lot to be desired sometimes).
