I’ve been a bit skeptical about The Batman since the news first surfaced that Robert Pattinson would be taking over the iconic superhero role, and the new teaser trailer that premiered during DC FanDome doesn’t really ease my concerns.
The film, which is slated to release on October 1, 2021, has director Matt Reeves at the helm and an impressive star-studded ensemble alongside Pattinson. Zoë Kravitz (“Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald,” “Mad Max: Fury Road”) as Selina Kyle; Paul Dano (“Love & Mercy,” “12 Years a Slave”) as Edward Nashton; Jeffrey Wright (the “Hunger Games” films) as the GCPD’s James Gordon; John Turturro (the “Transformers” films) as Carmine Falcone; Peter Sarsgaard (“The Magnificent Seven,” “Black Mass”) as Gotham D.A. Gil Colson; Barry Keoghan (“Dunkirk”) as Officer Stanley Merkel; Jayme Lawson (“Farewell Amor”) as mayoral candidate Bella Reál; with Andy Serkis (the “Planet of the Apes” films, “Black Panther”) as Alfred; and an unrecognizable Colin Farrell (“Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them,” “Dumbo”) as Oswald Cobblepot will all star in the film.

The Batman Teaser Trailer
So I dig the feel of the trailer. It feels considerably darker than previous Batman films, and I’m fairly sold on the story. But, I’m still not sold on Pattinson as Batman. Am I alone in this? While Pattinson has more than wow’ed me with incredible performances over the years (he’s an incredible actor in my book) – he just doesn’t feel like the right fit for this role. Even after this trailer and acknowledging that he’s playing a younger Batman, it just feels off for me.
