When the last trailer for The Falcon and The Winter Soldier debuted today, the first line of dialogue hit hard.
“It feels like it belongs to someone else”
Seeing Steve Rogers at the end of Avengers: Endgame is still an image that brings a series of emotions out in all of us. Of course, those closest to Rogers are experiencing a world that looks a lot different without him. So when Sam Wilson is training with that iconic shield – he feels the weight of what it means.
For so long, it did belong to someone else – and that someone else is someone that he misses.
When Steve left Bucky and Sam, he knew the world would be in good hands. Being friends with Bucky since they were just kids, and learning more about the heart of Sam – there was no question that they’d be able to carry out his legacy.
That shield, the one he passed onto The Falcon, isn’t the true spirit of Captain America, nor is it his legacy. It was always Steve’s heart that made the impact. Sam and Bucky…while a little rougher on the edges – especially with each other, have that special thing in their hearts, too.
Even if their conversations with one another are totally on the snarky side.
“So we’re partners.”
“Not necessarily a team.”
We’d be lying if we said we weren’t anticipating seeing that ‘not a team’ relationship turn into what, we hope, will be the exact bond Steve Rogers knew would be born between them. The bond that could win that battle, and eventually, that war. The bond that could create a world that’s a little brighter for everyone.
The Falcon and The Winter Soldier premieres on Disney + this Friday.
