DVD Review: Fool’s Gold

Matthew McConaughey and Kate Hudson go for the gold (and the diamonds, emeralds and rubies) as a just-divorced couple who bicker and banter their way through an adventure- and laugh-packed undersea treasure hunt. McConaughey is Finn, in love with his ex (Hudson) and in deep with gangster Bigg Bunny. After eight years of searching, Finn gets a clue to the whereabouts of the Queen’s Dowry, a fabulous fortune that mysteriously disappeared in the Caribbean in 1715. Now all he has to do is get the gold, get the girl and get going before Bigg Bunny gets him. Directed by Andy Tennant (Hitch), Fool’s Gold glitters with danger, action, romance, comedy, great one-liners – and a great time to be had by all!

Review:
Ben Finnegan (McConaughey) is a middle-aged surfer who is obsessed with one day finding a lost treasure known as,”The Queens Dowry.” It has treasure almost 300 years old inside. Unfortunately everything else in Ben’s life is falling to pieces, including his marriage and his boat. His soon to be ex-wife (Hudson) works aboard a boat that belongs to a billionaire (Sutherland), who has nothing but time on his hands. The only way for Ben to find the lost treasure and possibly save his marriage is to get in the good graces of the billionaire and make it a group effort to find the fortune.

I didn’t think this was a bad movie, but with all the hype around the film while it was in theaters, I expected a lot more. When it came down to it, it was a recycled script, that had Matthew McConaughey shirtless….. silence…… and Kate Hudson in a bikini quite a bit…. come on now. It was worth a watch, but not the first thing to grab off the shelf. It does a good job of putting you in the summer mood, I’ll give it that. There just seemed like there was a lot missing but flash and sunshine.
